Generally, the urban education system tends to nurture children to value utility over humanity, resulting in a lack of opportunity for children to come in contact with nature. Facing a reset post-pandemic, we have to think: is there a better education approach that can replace the older system?
Clement Wong, founder of the KL Steiner School, observed from his daughter’s passion in learning cursive that for children to love learning, they have to first discover “beauty”; and Waldorf education (a.k.a. Steiner education) advocates a holistic style of learning that nurtures children about beauty and humanity.
As an architect, Wong understood that the forest is harmonious and inclusive, which presents a variety of learning materials beneficial to the body and mind of children. Should one desires a holistic education integrated with nature, the best learning environment would be in a forest. Therefore, Wong established KL’s first forest school with the philosophy, “Let children be amazed by beauty, be moved by admiration, and be sincerely devoted to learning by inspiration.”

Clement Wong is the local senior architect who is also the founder of the first school with classrooms in the forest in Kuala Lumpur. Inspired by his wife later (a researcher in anthroposophy) coupled with his own rich experience in the construction industry, he realized the importance of "dialogue" between children and the natural ecosystem. Therefore, by referring to and adopting "Waldorf Education / Steiner Education", he started the first school with classrooms in the forest in Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing whole-person education as its core approach. Through imagination, creation and experience, the school aimed at stimulating children's learning in three aspects: willing, feeling and thinking, besides providing children with opportunities to associate with the natural environment while learning from nature. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
