The greatest fan devotion will always be the translation of Mother 3. That game is so good and it'd be a crying shame if we never got it.
The good news is Browny Brown the company who made Mother 3 made an rpg called (Professor Layton's London Life) on the DS, the art style is very similar to Mother.

The irony of using NordVPN when Nord has been censoring videos criticizing their practices
It's not ironic if everyone does it.
NordVPN also uses sells their users metadata. It's not a huge deal but still Ironic considering how they advertise themselves. They also lie a LOT, and they rely on sponsorships for that so that when pple point out their lies, they just go '' oh its the youtuber whos got it wrong''. (when they say that it hides your identity online for exemple. It does not, that's not what avpn is for anyway.)
Nintendo didn't intervene to stop the fan translation because they know they can never do an official one, so they decided to let the fans have the fan translation instead. As far as Nintendo is concerned, the fan translation _is_ the official translation.
That's my exact feeling for sure. We all know about the Nintendo ninjas and how litigious they can truly be if they want to be.
The fact they made zero effort to try to shut any of this down at any point tells me everything. Once the Twitter mobs and social media became too strong to ignore and too strong to go against something like mother 3 was always going to be basically impossible to bring over in any official capacity. Nintendo knows it would be between a rock and a hard place either anger the fans or anger the people that get offended by the smallest little things. A lose-lose situation that they would rather just avoid.
@@JohnDoe-kv3kd I think they should stand up against the woke mob. They’ve ignored them before so what’s the difference?

Exactly people can enjoy the meme status this has become but the fact of the matter is Nintendo simply doesn’t have the balls to do what they need to do. They could stand up to the Twitter mob very easily but they simply won’t because they’ve just gone to mainstream with this point. They can say whatever they want about not changing games but that’s third party not first party.

How is that funny to Americans? For 95% of them, it’s not.
I think it’s important to adapt a game to an audience, *especially* if the goal is for profit. Consider 4Kids entertainment. Yes, it is immortalized as localization gone wrong. But also think about what it did: it brought Japanese anime to a culture that was oblivious to it before. Yu-Gi-Oh is still one of my favorite childhood memories, and that would have never made it to Saturday morning cartoons in it’s original form.

Nerrel did a great video on this exact issue. The gist of the problem is, Nintendo is in a tough spot because of the fan translation. They know they would never be able to officially release a localization matching the quality of the fan translation since they would need to censor the game or heavily modify it to avoid controversy, but then the fans that want the game to be faithful would be upset and may not buy it. It’s a lose-lose for Nintendo, which is most likely why they quietly continue to allow the fan translation to exist.
Why would the fan translation be automatically of better "quality"?
@@fernandobanda5734 The fan translation was done by a professional translator with the intention of having it be as high quality as an official localization as possible. Since the fan translation is so polished and doesn’t censor or write around any of the game’s darker themes or cruder jokes, it would essentially make an official localization by Nintendo inferior because they would most likely have to censor or change quite a lot of things to get it to market without much controversy.
@@Edsh4rd I know it's high quality. But you're assuming that any change will automatically be worse. The fan translation still made localization decisions such as adding curse words, changing characters' names or choosing cockney rhyming for how the old mice in the attic speak. A lot of jokes are inevitably lost anyway. I don't get why it would be such a big deal for an official localization to make similar concessions, especially when we had Earthbound with cigarettes and crosses removed. Maybe you're assuming they'd change a whole lot and I'm not.
@@fernandobanda5734 I would suggest watching Nerrel’s video on the subject because he explains it much better than I can in a comment on a different video.
I don't really see controversy tbh. They can just slap on it a higher rating. A character that looks manly but acts feminine yet doesn't seem to be joked about in the game doesn't seem offensive to me. Nintendo has released much more mature stuff, they had abuse and gore in no more heroes (even if the former was sped up as a joke to not increase the rating), catherine full body, with cheating and a scene where a crossdresser ACTUALLY DOES GET MISTREATED (but it was taken out of context by journalists, and the protagonist goes through an arc understanding what he did was wrong and falling in love with said crossdresser),this one being very recent, they had conker's bad fur day, another game with a cutesy art style but containing alcohol, violence, and sexual content, Bayonetta 2, highly sexual, eternal darkness sanity's requiem had suicide themes, madworld had lots of black and white violence, gal gun 2 is on fucking switch and it's a shitload of ecchi, they have steins gate on it, which has a scene that can be taken as transphobic out of context as well as violent content, they have shin megami tensei where you aim to murder God with a big fat G, Xenoblade contains religious themes and is a Nintendo title, no more heroes is too, NEKOPARA IS ON THE GODDAMN FAMILY FRIENDLY CONSOLE!
Most titles are certainly third party, but Nintendo does have their share of mature exclusive titles made by them. So there's no excuse when they have released much worse, keeping most of it in the west.
Actually the real reason Mother 3 never got localized was because Shigesato Itoi said that because Earthbound never did so well outside Japan, there was no point to localize the Mother 3 outside Japan

The future truly does its job of wearing down a person.
Not inherently. Nintendo hasn’t done something like Geist in a long time. They publish Bayonetta with a weird deal with SEGA, but they really soften things up in regards to their own IP these days. Kind of like Disney
Unless Nintendo takes an anti-censorship policy, an official localization is becoming less and less likely each year. I don't think Nintendo is willing to censor the game. Its probably the one title they won't make a compromise for.
Up until this day, I still wonder how Boney recovered health without eating any mushrooms.

I feel like the censorship would remove a lot of the impact from the game. It’s okay to censor some things, personally I prefer if things didn’t get censored, but Mother is a rare case where it’s child friendly on the outside and dark on the inside.

Yeah, it's not going to be released in English. That's a shame, it would've sold insanely well, if the fan-translation download numbers are anything to go by (supposedly higher than the sales in Japan). Such a missed opportunity.
I mean, one is free... So it's illogical to compare the two. But I agree that it would've sold well, considering Earthbound Virtual Console numbers.
@@fernandobanda5734 Yeah, that's more of what I meant, been thinking about the Virtual Console and its impact... though to be fair, Japan is just a much smaller market than the rest of the world. If you wanted to maximize the sales, you'd absolutely have to localize your product, preferably into English/French/Spanish/Chinese at least. Maybe 20-30 years ago it was fine not to do that, nowadays there's just no reason not to.

Even the magypsies are more respectful with the trans community than Birdo, who was created near entirely to mock trans people.
Animal abuse is present in the game as something negative unlike the Pokémon series where is good to see your "pet" fighting until it faints.

Some things we've learned
• It's easier to prevent or halt localizations to North America than it is to start them.
• Canada gets USA's localizations, riddled with typos…
• Canada can only get USA's localizations, but doesn't get all of them; still waiting for Photos with Mario.
• Official localizations of games can pop up suddenly after many, many years - only to be for a limited release.
Damn that sucks, so pretty much Canada Gets America's Hand me downs.
If only Japan can send it to both countries.
Like someone said before, "Nintendo fans wanting the release of a game they have already played".
I think NOA saw that fans were doing the localization themselves so there is no need to pour money into something that may not profitable especially because the Mother series is practically over, also if they localize it themselves expect a censored version that "diehard" fans will dislike anyways so, in a business standpoint, why bother.
For those wondering why Nintendo can't just slap an M Rating on it, even THAT wouldn't fix everything for a States release.
The guy in the video goes over some of it himself, but this game has some events that are legitimately illegal to display in U.S. media. Animal & Underage Human Torture / Murder are not allowed to be explicitly shown on screen for ANYTHING in media in the U.S. AT ALL, not even a freaking Adult Rated Game. The law is really specific and easy to work around, so a lot of games do still have child murder and animal violence occur off screen, which for some reason makes it okay. Idk why it's like that, but that's the law.
Things are different in Japan obviously, but Nintendo would have to fundamentally change Mother 3's story to release it in the U.S., and tbh I wouldn't want that. Idk how the hell I'm supposed to get an official ROM for a game not released in my country tho :/
Edit: My explanation of the law was pretty poor so I revised it.
What are you even saying? Yeah you're allowed to depict those events in media. There's no law saying you can't so long as it's fictional (and let's face it, this is a cartoon)
Where are you getting this information? You can literally shiv dogs to death in The Last of Us Part II, not to mention the little girl that that gets shot and dies in the opening of the first game.
@@MixMasterLar I'll admit my wording was pretty poor. The law is oddly specific and kind of moot at the end of the day because it's so easy to work around it.
You're essentially not allowed to show Child / Animal torture / murder on screen. Like, you cannot see the light in the eyes of an underage person go out, or see a bullet go through their head and have their body hit the floor ON SCREEN. I've heard Metal Gear Solid had a child murder that they got away with by simply having the kid off screen, even though they get shot in the head, their body hits the floor, and the very next scene we see their dead body and blood spilling out of it. It just sounds so stupid putting it like that right?
Also, it being okay just because the events are fictional is ridiculous. That's either the worst reasoning I've ever heard or a really really REALLY stupid reason to not have a law. Honestly, why would it be okay JUST because it's fictional?
@@ians_parks I've got a friend that majors in business law that looked into it for me (Was majoring for 3 years at the time I posted the original comment). She never told me the exact law with the subsection and all that, but like I said in the last comment, it's really specific and super easy to work around.
I remember that scene from The Last of Us with Joel's daughter. She died off screen (it looked very close but it was off screen), that was okay to have. She got shot on screen yes, but as messed up as it sounds that's okay to have.
Idk about Part II with shiving the dogs, but if I had to guess, either the dogs don't die on screen, they were infected mutated dogs, or they were hostile and actively attacking Ellie.
Again this law is extremely specific, so my bad for not explaining it better. Graphic Animal TORTURE is illegal to portray on screen. Like, no beating them to death with blunt objects while blood splatters the crime scene and they whelp in pain as the individual makes sure they feel every bit of pain possible. I remember from a Steven King novel that a character throws a cat in an oven and cooks it alive, which I guess is okay for books for some reason, but that would not fly being animated no matter who makes it. The closest I've seen is Attack on Titan having a 7 year old girl getting eaten alive by dogs, but they only portrayed it in a still image while the girl was still mostly whole.
I haven't played Mother 3 myself, but my friend that majors in business law has, and apparently the game is full of things like that, except they actually show it (Salsa getting electrocuted by one of Porky's Minions for example). I haven't seen it myself, but I think The Masked Man also dies on screen, and uh, you know the issue there already. My Business Law friend also told me Child Experimentation is also illegal, so that's another point against the Masked Man.
Honestly I could go on for a while, which is kind of my point. Mother 3 simply has too much explicit, graphic content to even be legally released in the U.S. in it's current form. Think about it this way, if Nintendo COULD release it in the U.S, why haven't they done so by now? Better yet, why is the company that HATES fan-made projects okay with letting the Mother 3 translation exist?
@@crumpscrumbs this is blatantly false and unless you can cite laws that back this claim then I'm not interested in continuing this discussion.

I dont know if candy asses are a good thing or a bad thing but I love their designs and what I also love is other than small instances them being feminine isn't their whole character Its just a part of who they are. They rock and id love to see them again
It's sad that Nintendo is ashamed of this game, instead of being proud that they own such a well made game... I've heard that Itoi thought of releasing the story as a book because they were struggling with the N64 version, maybe that would've been the better idea. Though then we would've missed out on the awesome music and fun gameplay.
I don't think there are good reasons not to release it. I mean there are 3 examples in this video and imo all can be debunked: The eating mushrooms and having a trip part: after eating them, Lucas and his friends see pretty messed up stuff, where family members and friends say horrible things to them and in the end the magipsy tells them how stupid it was that they ate them and they get hit. So if anything that part speaks out against using drugs.
Salsa's abuse: yeah it's terrible, but it shows how ruthless and evil Fassad is, and this in turn makes the ending of that chapter feel so much better, when the Drago beats the shit out of him.
The magipsys: things like this show me that maybe representation isn't as good. If they would be just female or male then maybe we would've already gotten the game outside of Japan. I mean, people who want representation are also pretty fragile and it's not enough to give them representation, if they for some reason don't agree with the representation, then you're screwed (like the game). Also they are these godly beings who are never portrayed in a bad light at all so I don't get what's the problem with them. The developers wanted to somehow show that they aren't male nor female and this way wa a pretty straight forward choice to do that but I guess doing anything else would've been better. Maybe if they weren't human-like then we wouldn't be in this situtation.
If western people are so sensitive, then they could also just give it a higher rating, I think there are probably enough adult Mother fans who would buy this game to make it profitable, especially because they don't have to put in any work, because the awesome fans who translated the game, already did it for them. So if Nintendo still is ashamed of the game, then just put a disclaimer at the beginning and release it and watch the money pour in.
I guess it would kill one of the most used jokes in the community, but whatever.
I doubt Nintendo is ashamed of the game. They're just acting under advice from American censors.
Cry harder Karen
@@mikicerise6250 I've seen several videos about this topic and they often mention how Nintendo doesn't want to hurt their family frienldy image and stuff like that. I was mostly refering to that.
I mean if the representation is shit I'd understand but this is literally just a dude with girl clothes. What is wrong with that? (I mean there's already a bias against that for no reason, women can wear men's clothes but if a man wears a skirt they're "gross" and "trying to get attention")
I don't understand the "family friendly image" of Nintendo either. Earthbound was always like this, and this kiddifying was just applied to the big Nintendo mascots, which had tried being more serious before with games like strikers charged and the first three paper mario plots. They still release a lot of mature games on their platform, and have as exclusives some pretty strong stuff and even sexual content, like Bayonetta and No More Heroes.
I don't understand what would be wrong with releasing a game with a kid friendly artstyle that has mature themes, that isn't a main Nintendo franchise, with a higher rating.
And the idea that they don't do it because a fan translation already exists is not in line with the Nintendo destroying all roms they see and shutting down fan projects. Plus they saw how a game only known through fan translations, trials of mana, sold a lot both with the collection and the remake. Mother 3 is even more infamous.
@@elgatofelix8917 the Karens are the moms that wouldn't want it to be released because it has drugs tho
Honestly, while mother 3 was "dark" it wasn't horrific, compared to some of the other games that Nintendo has released. Again Id chalk this up to being completely political. I don't really care if its released or not the game is extremely accessible to those who want to play it.
Seeing at how a lot of censorship happens because of how bad certain people would react to certain material, I'm starting to see the legitimacy of "trigger warnings". Keep the sensitive material as is, and inform the viewer/player about the nature of the material.
I semi agree at least or part way, it will work at first. Then said people will manage to inliftrate, keep the TWs as well remove the content since "They have control now".
All who are triggered by content and won't shut up about it, are cry bullies. Emotional weak people, who try to "Advodcate" that this will be offensive to X Group. Look at how the spanish/latin Community love the speedy Mouse, they defended him when he was attacked. If ever group did that, things might start to improve.
@@thecompareablezombie That's basicallyt what happened. It started with trigger warnings, then "offensive" material was just removed outright.
That's kinda what video game and media content warnings are, essentially. They've always existed. They tell you if there is violence/blood/gore, language, sex, drug/alcohol use, and these warnings have only gotten more advanced over time 🙂
We already have these in games since the ESRB was formed.
@@tigerfestivals5137 I know, but people still don't seem to pay attention to them.
Well, considering the changes they would need to make, id rather stick to the fansub.
So Nintendo knew about the fan translation and didn't stop us from localizing said game
You don't think, Nintendo wanted us to localize Mother 3 ourselves, don't you?
@Cassius Zedaker Explain Pokémon Uranium a rom hack itself I think
@Cassius Zedaker explain all of the shutdowns of hacks, rom sites and fangames
@Cassius Zedaker that makes even less sense. They're modifying their creation to make said romhack, but a free fangame is built from the ground up.
@Cassius Zedaker it's weird since they have taken down some hardware modifications and even tried to sue blockbuster for copying game manuals in an attempt to stop rentals of games in america (they managed to do so in japan due to different laws) and failed.
They never liked modifications of games
what is the red arrow for in the thumbnail when he's the only visible face in the screenshot
Also when is mother 4 coming out?
never. itoi said that there are no plans for a fourth game, there are a few fan games in the working that want to take the place
It's hard to explain without spoiling the game, but essentially Mother 3 concludes the trilogy. Itoi gave a nice quote about how what you take from the series and experience on your life is your own Mother 4. As for fangames, Oddity was originally going to be Mother 4 before the devs removed Mother references for legal reasons (AM2R- Another Metroid 2 Remake- was a remake of Metroid 2 that Nintendo took down, prompting the decision) and it looks really cool, you can find the trailer on YT. There is also a Mother Fan game direct coming on I believe June 13th on CZcams where more info may potentially be revealed for Oddity and other fan works

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo deliberately withheld a worldwide release of Mother 3 out of pure spite 🤣
Geez, is the entire game in hiragana? It's so difficult to decipher sometimes what is being talked about. Kanji would definitely help.
If it's content reasons I'm sure it's the Magypsies that they don't want to try to localize. Some people would be offended that they had characters like that in a game that seems kid-friendly while others would be offended at specifically how those characters are depicted. In Breath of the Wild most of the main characters are dead and you can torture animals as much as you want, I highly doubt they would refuse to translate it because it deals with death and animal cruelty. Nintendo hasn't been worried about that kind of thing for decades now.
This is why torrents, roms, and emulators exist.
And Import sites too
Yeah but playing mother 3 on an emulator sucks tho.
@@abcaretheonlylettersiknow7834 I had no problems but I also used the 8Bitdo SNES controller so it was basically like playing on console. I actually prefer playing Mother 2’s rom on PC as well over the actual SNES since it’s uncensored.

At this point, I am hoping they are looking into a remake of the series, maybe with graphics similar to the Link's Awakening remake - that would be amazing
Censorship = pussification. Let people decide themselves what they can or cannot watch.
There's also the aspects that are critical of capitalism which could easily cause PR issues in America.
i believe that it wasn't released in the west on the gameboy in 2006 was partially due to money. nobody talked about earthbound at that time, and jrpgs were not quite popular here yet. the controversial topics when considering the 2015 release could be a lot of different things (As said in the video). however, earthbound could get away with the many localisation changes because none were severely impacting the story. when you brought up the fact that they could just do a huge censorship on mother 3 like it did with its prequel, it simply would not be possible without changing major parts of the story. i honestly think the fan translation is amazing, and that we do not need an official translation because it would likely censor much more than needed, making the fan translation more authentic to play anyway
How about this insted: shoots fireball!
Thank You for telling us why, Censored Gaming!
I'm the kind of person who will buy video games many, many, many years after they have been released. I'm always a console generation behind everyone else, by choice. If Nintendo released Mother 3 tomorrow for the Switch, I would buy both a Switch and Mother 3 at full price without question.
Great video! I clearly need to play this game at some point.
Nintendo- "Don't emulate our games"
Also Nintendo- *Doesn't localize Mother 3 so the only way to play it in English is via emulation.*
I’m kind of glad Mother 3 wasn’t released over here originally, because if it was, it would just be another Earthbound in how rare and expensive it would be.
I thought I was released already, unless that fan translation was finished. Where else could these translated walkthroughs be come from?
Even if they had to change some things about the game I played earthbound and I’ll look for a English version just to play it
No matter who you are or what your world view is, every human can agree - Mother 3 must be localised.
"Good to see you, snookums! ❤" lol
With all the comments here, it looks like there's no issue releasing it in Europe, so why is Europe being silent about this?
6:43 I need to finish that game. I loved it so much, I just stopped using the Wii U.
I doubt it'll ever be released in English unless it's a remake
and doubt a remake would happen as Shigesato Itoi said he was done with the Mother series for good
@@MERCHIODOS just because he's done with it doesn't mean someone else can't make it. I don't think naughty dog or insomniac had anything to do with the spyro and crash remakes.
If the first Mother game took a while to be localized in the west for whatever reason, then even though it's been several years, there could be an official localization of the game, just on a more up to date console like the switch.
I think people should just be glad there's a great fan translation and walk away happy and satisfied.
The problem is the previous two versions were heavily censored and changed/"localized" and that was fine for the time but that would never fly now especially given how much outrage there's been with previous games that have come out with this many changes.
Nintendo knows they're between a rock and a hard place they could put it out properly with no changes and get nothing but outrage and backlash from the Twitter mob. Or they could release it with tons of changes and anger and outrage all the fans.
Unfortunately I just have no faith that Nintendo has any cojones and would actually step up and do the right thing.
They know what they should do but they're never going to do it. Considering how much they've not only condoned but absolutely done everything but give their full blessing to the fan translation I'd say that's as close as we're ever going to get to anything official.
Question I know it's called mother in Japan and in America the games are called EarthBound what do you mean when you said the character from Earthbound and the character from mother 8:21 of the video
Because there is no official English title of the game. It's called Mother 3 in Japan, but since the west has yet to see it's release, there is no such thing as "Earthbound 2".

How about a different version of Mother 3 with same characters, but with a similar or different story/timeline that caters to the west to prevent controversy?
There is one major way to get around all the censoring if they do release it...and thats giving it a T rating if at worst M.
I'm saying this because Miitopia in Russia has an M rating due to their views on homosexual relationships.
Awesome Video
Also I have thought about some ideas to localized the game
I'm pretty glad it's not. There is no way Nintendo's version would be better than the one we already have
Alright, Nintendo should make GBA online membership with mother 3 English in it,they put the first two on, so there is no reason why they shouldn't.They should obviously change some stuff though.

they should just make it rated T and make it download only
where can we get mother 3?

Mother 3 should be released outside Japan. Furthermore, it must be released in its unedited form.

When I first played it and finished it I right away understood why it never made it to the US. I can see it more available in today's time since there's more of this content out here already. Definitely 13 and over for sure
why does it seems so complicated to get any form of information from game editors ? They are no different from any other company selling a product, should have fully functional customer services with possibility to ask question about specific products, typically like the one at hand in this video !
You can go ask any time you want. They're going to tell you "There are no plans to release that game" because that's the truth. They're not going to reveal complex behind-the-scenes issues. It would be like asking Coca-Cola for an old flavor they stopped releasing. What do you think the answer would be?

I kinda wonder how popular this franchise really was, even in Japan. If the series was as huge as people make it seem, why was there never Mother 4 and 5 and 6, etc?
Because not everything needs a sequel. Sometimes you've finished telling the story you want to tell.
The creator of the series, Shigesato Itoi, has repeatably said that he doesn't want to make any more sequels.
The series ended. Mother 3 was the last game.
If I remember well, Itoi have said that he made these games to be closer with his daughter when she was a child.
The dragged-out serializations of games only happened in recent years.
I don't know who's bright idea was to not release Mother 1 and 3 but only released 2 in the US.

You can find the English rom on the gba emulator
Are you perhaps talking about the fire gba Rom that thing is awesome it's like if nintendo made gba online
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. They've not opposed the releases of the unofficial translations. That's about the best you can expect from them on this front.
I remember watching 16-bit gems where Roo went into great debt revealing the history of Mother and how Mother 3 was not released.
What is he doing these days? I last watched his videos off of Pat The NES Punk's website (this was the time of blip.tv. I thought he didn't have a site and was just piggybacking of Pat's site).

I honestly think the main controversy would be the stuff that could be rather easily interpreted as a bit pedo, like all the kissing of the kid characters in hot tubs and underwater by grown adults that look like men in one form or another, but the rest is basically all passable these days imo. Personally speaking though, I wouldn't change a thing, as the game is a bona fide masterpiece and every element that some might interpret as dodgy, I could argue is pure fantasy and not actually supposed to be taken literally or as interpreted by some.
I mean, arnt they adding adding omori to the switch?
Mother 3 might actually get a chance
