- On September 12, 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech at the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City to honor the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on the eve of its centennial anniversary. At a dinner organized by New York's Civil War Centennial Commission, Dr. King spoke on the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation in American history, arguing that the document proved that government could be a powerful force for social justice. He urged Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and President John F. Kennedy to hasten integration and progress towards full civil rights.

I was there for that speech. My parents took my brothers and I to see and hear Dr. King. They wanted to educate us. My mother told me after his speech, Martin Luther King Jr. came down and spoke to my brothers and I and shook our hands. I was very young at the time so I have no remberence except what my mother told be. I wish they had pictures or videos. We were up front next to the baracades
"We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the opressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed..... Justice too long delayed is justice denied. " bah! He had words that would lighten your soul up! Such a good man.
I CAN NOT STOP LISTEN TO MY HERO..MLK
This is a great speech from a great man and so much truth are in this wonderful speech.
From 1962, but yet could vary well be speaking for 2018. May God send his truth to knock the brains out of falsehood and may we have the courage to live it, amen.
What a "GREAT ORATOR" ..... Dr. King use such a vocabulary that it's amazing to just listen to a well educated man....#From1man2anotha
Dr. King was master in the uses of word. There was no greater public speaker in the twenth cent,
The only known speech and notes of this presentation given by one of my hero's MLK on this day, this is definitely a MUST SEE(hear)VIDEO
I love this man so much brings peace and hope to me even today! What a great man such strength through love. May God bless everyone on here and your hearts be full of love! Live tomorrow to make this man as proud as of you as I am of him!
Great MLK, Great Jefferson and Great Lincoln. I wish someday America will be a strong moral country. In it is all the answer.
Still relevant, though large strides have been made since 1962. What a jewel of a find.
Thank you for sharing this gem. In it are the roots of I Have a Dream, A Time to Break Silence, and I've Been to the Mountaintop. While I understand and support the King family's right to copyright and live off of his spoken words, the practice has virtually stripped those words from the consciousness of the several generations of US youth who need to hear and contemplate what this great American said and why he said it. I am certainly glad that this speech remains in the public domain.
Amen!
This needs to be shared with the world.
This is awesome! Proud of you NYS Museum! Thank you for sharing this great find :)
Hes inspired a young mind who touches on these topics. Look up "Tone Da Boss - Freedom" its a rap song actually worth listening to even MLK would have been proud of

Thank you for posting this! It seems we *still* have that same problem with that hostile region to this very day. They've just expanded the classes of people whom they wish to deny basic rights.

The speech starts by suggesting that Thomas Jefferson's original Declaration of Independence encouraged an attack on the UK, because of the slave trade. King does not provide relevant background that Jefferson was both a slaveholder and in love with a slave. Based on the wording of King's speech, I am not sure if he was fully aware of this fact, and the tortuous dilemma Jefferson likely struggled with most of his life; i.e. the long term benefit of national unity, versus the ethics of slavery.
