  • Kimi Antonelli is the future of Formula 1 and the most hyped young talent in motorsport right now. Kimi Antonelli skipped F3 and went straight into F2 for the 2024 season, and looks to be a very realistic option for a full time seat with Mercedes in 2025. But why is this 17 year old being fast tracked into F1, and is he actually ready to be a Formula 1 Driver? Enjoy!

      Not really. Some drivers need experience coming all the way through the formulas before their ready 13/20 drivers on the grid have done F2, most of them at least being in the title fight/ top 3 that year. Some drivers are just obviously massively talented earlier in their careers. Some drivers are obviously F1 material at 16 or 17, some don't get it until their 20s. It's the same in most other sports: e.g. some footballers are world class at 19, some only become that good in their mid 20s.

    • @tiagoferreira5368
      @tiagoferreira5368 Před 26 dny

      That is because F1 teams cares more about money than actually risking on quality drivers.
      The Pourchaire case is very obvious: 2nd in F3 at 16 years old, 5th, 2nd and 1st in F2 at 17, 18, 19 year old. These stats rival with Bearman which supposedly is the next big thing, with Bearman finishing 3rd in F3 and 6th in F2 at the same age as Pourchaire. So pretty similar i guess.
      But Theo doesn't have a seat because Sauber/Stake/Kick they rather have a driver that took 3 years to reach 3rd in F2 but brings a load of money.
      Mind you i am not a Pourchaire fan i just think that his stats are maybe the most impressive among the drivers who don't have a seat.

  • @Connor-jd5dl
    @Connor-jd5dl Před 28 dny +5

    Not sure people should be taking into account the F2 standings TOO much, comparing him to bearman (who has arguably proved himself now) will be a great way to see where he’s at, and he seems fairly close so far, the 2-3 tenth range is decent for a rookie

  • @seanonraet8327

    I think we need to calm down a bit with Kimi. He is only a few races into his f2 career and it hasn't gone great so far, largely due to factors out of his control I know. After skipping f3 he is already less experienced than most of the rest of the f2 grid, so unless he ends up at least top 3 in the championship I feel like rushing him into f1 could be very bad for his career, regardless of what team he joins. F1 fans are very fickle, remember what happened to Mick Schumacher

    This is the issue with F1, there's too many people waiting in the wings to even get a shot in an F1 seat. They need to open the sport up like it used to be with many many teams competing to even qualify for the race. True qualifying where there's no guarantee that you'll even race that weekend. That's what F1 should be instead of the elitist club that it's become

      f1 shouldn't be an all inclusive club where you have new drivers such as f2 champions just for the sake of having new drivers. if f1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, it needs to have to pinnacle of drivers in the driver market so what value does an f2 champion like mick bring to the grid? he's just there as a consolation prize for winning f2? a more common trend of f2 drivers who actually deserve their seat in f1 are those who win f2 in their first year by dominant margins like leclerc and hamilton have.

    Kimi Antonelli is currently sat 9th in Formula 2. It's not clear he will even have enough FIA Super License Points to qualify for an F1 seat, and even if he does, he will only barely.
    The fact is there are WAY more drivers on the market with enough Super License Points who probably would be better options. Yes Antonelli has had enough success in Formula 4 to justify him skipping straight to Formula 2. But currently he is not putting in the performances to justify moving up to F1.
    Yes there was the Max Verstappen case where Max jumped straight to F1 after only a single season of F3 where he finished 3rd in that championship, and would go on to have the career he is currently having. HOWEVER to expect Antonelli to be Mercedes 'Max Verstappen' is a stupid idea, Max is the exception to the rule.

    If anyone wants "the next Max Verstappen", you'll be waiting at least 20 years. And that is when Max Verstappen's kid grows up.

  • @whyareyoureadingmynickname8158

    People need to realize that Max Verstappen in 2015 was an exception and not a rule, and stop with these "golden boys". Yes, they all have great skill, but nearly all of them tend to crack under pressure much easier than some other drivers due to everyone expecting them to be the next best thing. We saw it many times with Leclerc, Russell and Norris, we saw it with Kvyat, Gasly and Albon and we will keep seeing it unless this "golden boy" trend dies.
    Drivers also need to be mentally ready for Formula 1, having skill is not only requirement.

    The kid's the future, but you're setting him up to fail if you put him in the Merc for 2025. The only case it should happen is if he demolishes the F2 field for the reat of '24, which doesn't look likely seeing how Prema's doing thus far.
    Other thing would be for him to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams, which would be a good option as long as he's been at least solid. But if you out him with George you're rushing him way too much, specially having the like of Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon or even someone like Esteban Ocon you can put for at least a pair of years while Kimi improves and gets ready for what even nowadays is a top seat in Formula One.

    From the POV of Sainz, Mercedes just makes the most sense. He can stay with a relatively good team, try and displace Russell as the main driver in the absence of Hamilton, then maybe move to Audi once its got its feet under itself. For Williams, it also makes sense. It's pretty clear at that Sargeant just isn't good enough, so Kimi would be a great upgrade for a season, before he probably goes to Mercedes and replaces either Russell or Sainz depending on how that battle plays out.
    Imo despite Sainz' recent form, the move and the new environment will upset that, faced with Russell who by that point will probably be a more complete driver than he is right now - another years experience fighting and keeping pace in the mid/front pack, not just sat at the back in a Williams like he did when he came in. Russell would probably beat him imo but it seems like by far his best shot at staying in a top team.

    My opinion is to wait a bit because he hasn't been impressive in F2. Wait until the mid of the season, if he strugles then Mercs can get a 1 year deal with a midfield driver like Ocon while Kimi get a 2nd season in F2
    But if Kimi improves, then sign him. Also there is an advantage in signing Kimi for 25 because most likely mercedes wont be fighting in the top and it gives Kimi 1 year in f1 without pressure to just learn and learn and learn.
    Forget williams, they have their own academy and they already said they don't want to grow talent for other teams.

    There isn't any rush to sign Kimi. Toto still hopes to sign Max. When there is just the slightest opportunity (and there is). He is the best driver on the grid right now. On paper it seems out of this world, a move for max. But what if he doesn't believe in the Red Bull Power train program? We are going to the new regulations and Mercedes did get the best engines last time. They also tanked quiet long last time they put all there eggs in there engine program. It was so strong they even had a proper party mode because they didn't needed there engine a 100%. In 2021 we saw Lewis getting the full potential of the engine (at the end of the season) and we saw how much faster it was then the Red Bull.
    To me they really an opportunity there to get Max. They where always in talks with Max before he entered F1 (just that they missed out to not give him a F1 seat guaranteed like Helmut at TR)
    But they had good conversations (not sure how much Lauda had to do with it) back in the days. I would not be surprised if he make the move at the end, therefor understand why Toto gives it all to flirt with Max and wait with Kimi. It's not the case like with Max that he suddenly can jump in another F1 car without there permission.
    We know Kimi is exciting to follow somebody pre F1. Some real Hype, it even make me get excited for F2. But even Max got a seat first at TR to adjust and make mistakes

    He is beating bearman at the moment(jeddah tax), and seeing the downward trend of mercedes, being 5th, I can see why they would want him, cant get worse surely? However, in a market where Sainz is available, merc have to do everything to get him. Personally i dont think Russell can lead merc, and Sainz fits the leader role well. He should do f2 another year, unless he goes on a mad run later in the year.

      @sodiehq7506 Před 23 dny

      I always think it's very difficult to make comparisons in f2 just because of how unpredictable the championship can be. antonelli is beating bearman at the moment but that doesn't take into account facts that bearman received damage from another driver in round one and his qualifying run was interrupted with red flags in round 3. bearman obviously had the stellar jeddah performance but i still think we need to wait to properly gauge the abilities of both drivers.

  • @Gatotsu2009
    @Gatotsu2009 Před 28 dny

    Is a complex issue for Merc. No good driver wants to wait for they decision regarding Antoneilli and neither sign a 1year contract if they want to place Antonelli in F1 for 2026. A modern team can evaluate a good driver "easily", Max and Kimi R are 2 good examples that a good driver will perform even if he jumps categories but being in AlphaTauri or Sauber in your 1st years is not the same as being at Merc.
    If I was Merc I would sign him asap and see how 2025 goes, after all no one expect them to fight for a championship until 2026 so 25 will be a good year for Merc to truly evaluate him and learn since Merc is the 4th car right now.

    If Antonelli goes to Williams for 1-2 years, then goes to Merc and either:
    A) has a great first year and follows it up with a crap one (like GR in 2023)
    B) has a crap season
    C) doesnt get selected - stays at Williams
    Then I think we can confirm that the current Mercedes driver academy is awful. GR is besting Hamilton atm, but Hamilton is right back where he was in 2022 and driving very poorly.

    I say he will burst up in flames and be not the next hot thing. There are to many unanswered Questions about 2026. Rissing Pressure on Totto from the Mercedes main brand especially with Audi going full force for 2026. I know Sauber is shit right now but Audi F1 isnt Sauber in any form they dont even take over there facility they are even expanding there current Motorsport Facility for more space for F1 in Neuburg Germany.
    So you have a German Car Brand that gets even more eyes on them from there Home market, with another german brand in Audi entering and they have a German Facility compared to one based in the UK. Then they are also currently not Performing and knowing that Audis Motorsport team isnt some runaway hobby Project like Aston Martin. The Audi car 2026 could be the Dark horse that kills Totto Wolf at Mercedes and will take Antonelli with him. If Audi beats Mercedes in 2026 or 2027 and Mercedes has no new title by then. Wolf is gone and Antonelli with him. There will be either two responces by Mercedes
    1: Quitting F1 Completly or
    2: Restructuring the Team.
    So Antonelli has to Outperform the Mercedes Car and get a amazing seat at another team if option 1 happens or hope the Restructuring does not kick him out as he is Wolfs Driver. So he has no Godamm Option to be either the best thing since sliced bread and hope Mercedes gets 2026 right or 2027 will be a Intersting Year to watch how Mercedes F1 und Mercedes Benz beef it out.
