  • Why It's So Hard to Like Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon is a Formula 1 driver that i honestly have mixed feelings about, he was once a driver who i saw as really nice and cool to be around. But then when we see his on track personality, its like seeing a totally different person. He has a bit of a delusional mindset and a way of competing which isn;'t healthy for himself and other drivers. He is talented and skilled though, theres no denying that. But i do hope that Ocon can better himself after the multiple incidents hes had with other drivers like Max Verstappen and especially his former teammate Fernando Alonso. This video is a bit of a funny and serious take on the situation so take it with a grain of salt. If you have a different perspective on the situation, feel free to leave a comment below.
Also this video was inspired by a video i saw regarding the UFC fighter Isreal Adesanya and "Why Everyone Hates Israel Adesanya" i felt like F1 should have its own version with the current grid, that being Esteban Ocon. I wouldve done Nikita Mazepin but well hes not in the grid anymore. Bye bye Maze-spin.

"Alpine F1 driver Esteban Ocon had some terrible luck during the first race of the 2023 season. Before the lights went out, the Frenchman lined up his car ahead of his grid spot which led to the driver incurring one time penalty. He further went on to receive another time penalty for not serving his first penalty right. It was later found out that Ocon passed the speed limit while entering the pits." ....thats why he received the penalities. So whats the point in mentioning ? Ocon is one of the VERY FEW drivers that didn’t come from money. Even Hamilton, whose family wasn’t super rich like most others, was still relatively wealthy. Ocon was middle class and worked his way up purely on merit. It should be such a PR slam dunk, but it ends up working against him because he feels like he has more to prove as someone who didn’t come from the same social standing as the rest.

Let's first define rich. I would say 30M$+, as this is the definition of UHNWI.
I remember that the sponsor of Fabio Leimer (GP2 Champion of 2023) said in an interview he put 18M CHF (roughly 20M $ today) into his careers. Obviously Fabio had multiple seasons in F2, so you could get to F1 cheaper - and he didn't even make it to F1 - but still, you'd have to dish out at the very least 10M$ out of pocket. And this shouldn't impact your quality of live. So by that standard, let's examine the drivers you mentioned.
Verstappen: Well of but his dad was nowhere near where he could pay 10M$ out of pocket without affecting his quality of live. That would probably be most of his net worth if not more. But he's certainly well connected -> Not rich
Sainz: Well of but his dad was nowhere near where he could pay 10M$ out of pocket without affecting his quality of live. That would probably be most of his net worth if not more. But he's certainly well connected -> Not rich
      Russell: Not rich, middle class
Norris: Rich, his dad could easily afford it
Piastri: His parents are certainly not poor but his dads company employs roughly 100ppl. Maybe enough to carry his sons career, maybe not. According to media, they definitely drop a few millions themselves.
Stroll: Rich, his dad could easily afford it
      Zhou: Unknown, possibly also rich
      Tsunoda: Not rich
Sargeant: His parents are not rich but his uncle is supposedly a potential billionaire

IMO it kinda seems like for a guy that had to earn his place all the way to F1, but just isn't quite WDC contender material, Esteban is driving to keep his spot in F1. Massive respect to the guy for just being a legit talent, but I think that might be why it seems like he has an ego. He just is the kind of guy that always has to advocate for himself, because merit is what is keeping his seat, not how nice he is. He seems pretty nice off track, obviously a quiet dude, doesn't really need off track drama.

This point always seemed a little weird to me.
Firstly, Lewis had an even more humble family background, nevertheless, he is not behaving like a d*ck.
Secondly, everybody drives to keep their spot in F1 (except 1 individual on the grid) :D
And thirdly, at this point, he made north of $10 million, so he (or his family) clearly doesn't have to work a day in his life anymore. However, his attitude is still the same.
Let's be honest - Esteban has a massive chip on his shoulder. He is talented, but nothing extraordinary (relative to F1 greats). So he uses his upbringing to justify his anger management issues and lack of performance.

    • @eanfran
      @eanfran Před 3 měsíci +5

@Maxzung 1. Whether or not Lewis is dick is highly subjective, nevertheless you're right, but I never discounted, or even said anything about him.
      2. This is true, but I don't think it's controversial to say that Esteban's seat is far more contentious than most others on the grid
      3. This is kind of a non sequitur. Why does making a lot of money mean you aren't or shouldn't be a dick at your job? It's not like it would be acceptable (at least the way you frame it) if he didn't make a lot of money.
I think you're blowing his ego way out of proportion. I really don't see him acting out of line at all. Is he a little self-centered? Yes, that isn't really all that surprising, or really that unlikeable compared to everyone else on the grid, or motorsport in general

Esteban, opening the bag: This is a toaster.
I feel bad for both of them because the most positive thing I can say about Alpine nowadays is that at least it’s not Haas. It sucks because even when they had good race days this season there was always someone in mid field that was better than them and they ended up forgotten or they were mentioned for all the wrong reasons (as you mentioned in the video).
If we compare Stroll’s garage stunt from this year and Ocon’s “lapses of judgment” (for lack of better words) throughout the years we can see that everyone can earn redemption. But in Ocon’s case I think he gave up.

I'm a die-hard Alonso fan. Few years ago I kinda liked Ocon, and I was really happy to see him to take that victory by the help of Alonso.
The way he treated and talked sh*t about Alonso really pissed me off, and I also started to hate Ocon.
Ungrateful, totally mediocre egoist driver. He, and the way he is acting reminds me of Francois Delecour (I know he was a rally driver). Really unsympathic.
Ocon is not necessarily a bad guy or a bad driver. In my opinion he isn't any worse than Hülkenberg for instance. But I feel like sometimes his mouth is way bigger than his talent.
I feel he is jelaous. Mostly of Verstappen. But maybe of Alonso too. He should stop talking cr@p about Alonso.
Alonso's pair of gloves worth more than Ocon's whole career ever will.

    • @bilalrazaq8522
      @bilalrazaq8522 Před 4 měsíci +26

So when Alonso completely talked sh*t about Ocon in Brazil, that's justified, but when Ocon does it, he has an ego? The only things Ocon has really said against Alonso was mentioning that he *also* had bad luck in 2022, and that he did majority of the sim and marketing work. Other than that, he's upheld he has respect for Alonso. Even in Grill The Grid, when he's asked who one of the best drivers was, he said Alonso.
And it's not like they hate each other. Monaco shows that they're fine with each other, and F1 posted something from Las Vegas which showed them greeting each other, so clearly they're fine
As for being jealous, that's just bullshit. No way to prove he is. And you act like Ocon is talking crap about Alonso every week, when he's not. Both drivers have other issues to deal with. I get you can be angry about Brazil 2023, or Hungary 2022, but those incidents happen to every driver. But because it happened to Alonso, Ocon must be villianised

Alonso's behaviour is normal to him, he come to a team say "look guys i'm the best" and don't achieve his goal, than trashtalk all the team, it's the same thing since 2006 (yes, even with Renault). He critize his teamates (look at Ferrari and how he killed Massa). Yet u say that Ocon is an "Ungrateful, totally mediocre egoist driver". Experience told us the other way.
Ocon do not hate Verstappen, he didn't take Ocon seat in F1 or anything, but yeah, hating the man who trashtalk you all season long and critizise the team is something normal.

Also I've never heard any Ocon's teammate praising him, he only praises himself. The most funny part came in DTS season 1, when he was complaing, that he has to go to circuit in a car, but his teammate Checo Perez went in helicopter. So yeah, Ocon is an egoist driver.

It's true that his behavior towards teammates is sometimes pathetic and i hate the fact that he never recognize his mistakes, but he's definitely one of the most likable guy out of the car and the most underrated driver of the grid!
First of all, he was super solid in karting, not as good as Charles or Max, but stolid, despite coming from a poor background (he's the only driver of the grid that genuinely had a family that had barely enough money to live), then in the junior formulas, he was as good a the other of his generation and beat Max (although with a better team and with more experience) in European F3.
At Manor in 2016, he progressively closed the gap to Wherlein and had an amazing race in the rain in Brazil, where he fought for the points against much faster car (that performance give him the FI seat over Pascal), he also finished all the races and never made any mistake.
Then at FI, he was incredibly solid, almost finishing every time in the points and being incredibly close to Pérez in 2017 (scored 87 points against Sergio's 100), then out-paced him in qualifying in 2018 16-5 (and also showed great tire management, he was just a bit more unlucky than Pérez).
After a full year in the sideline, he had a somewhat mediocre season against Ricciardo but still scored good points consistently and was able on multiple occasions to challenge Stroll who had a much faster car.
Then, against Alonso, he was sometimes seriously impressive, although he was generally less brilliant and far less consistant, he was more often than not able to somewhat match Alonso's pace and did better against him than most of his teammates, let's not forget he's still the last driver at Enstone to have won a race.
Finally, last year, he scored only 4 points less than Gasly despite 3 times more DNF.
Btw, you also need to know that he is the driver who costed the least amount of money isn car crashes over the past 7 years among drivers who had at least 1 full season, so his propension to ruin his team are overly exxaggerated.

He's disliked because when he's had incidents, whether with teammates or other drivers, it's always popular drivers. Perez's and Alonso's fanbases are very dedicated, so when Esteban would race them on track, he would be antagonised. Many people ignore that Perez was at fault for the majority of their incidents together.
Angering the Verstappen fanbase didn't help either. And the media turned people against him with the whole Gasly v Ocon story. As Gasly was the only one of the pair to talk about their past, and as he's more popular, people sided with him against Esteban.
A common idea that is used to hate Ocon is that none of the drivers like him, which isn't true. Him and Max have a good relationship, it seems like things have cooled off between Esteban and Checo, and his relationship with Alonso is good, despite what his fans think. And he's fine with Gasly as well. The hate against Ocon is just stupid, considering he's a heavily underrated driver and one of the nicest drivers in the paddock

Alonso can talk shit and be the way he is because his self-perception is based on reality; when he returned to F1 and wasn't fast, he knew and accepted that he wasn't fast. He was submissive and apologetic and honest. His confidence is related to how good he is. He acts like hot shit when he IS hot shit. So it's fine. It's honest snd self-aware. Alonso will stop acting like that as soon as his performance drops off.
Ocon thinks he's better than what he is. And he's unnecessarily dog-eat-dog. That's what makes him dislikeable.
Unfortunately, without Ocon, that team would have less points. And they need to finish well this year. I don't really like his personality but he's good. And now his team is struggling he's been nice and seems like they're going forwards.

Ocon know what it is to lose an F1 seat, Perez was very hard against him at Force India (Belgium and Singapore GP), due to that, Perez was kept (he scored more points) so yes, Estaban defended hard against all of his teammate, knowing that it is important to lead the team by scoring more points. Also, he has an agressive style, so he is sometime more kind to do mistake. I think his style was really defined at Manor where he had a shitty car and has to do impossible things to keep the pace. Tha'ts also why he isn't a great overtaker, which is a thing we like very much in f1 (tbh, Ricciardo was the same before going the Red Bull in 2014). He is not perfect and isn't making a lot more mistake than other midfielder , but due to the fact that he was almost always alongside "cool" drivers (as consider by the fanbase such as Ricciardo (+he replace Hulk who was also popular) Alonso (I don't know why people like him as he is an absolute dick with the teams he had driven for) and Gasly ) any of the thing he does is criticable by anyone (of course Brazil 2018) and the toxics fans are numerous.
Also, see how netflix has treated Gasly win at Monza vs what they did for Esteban, for most of the new fan, his win is only due to Nando (OC he played a major role here but Ocon has to defend against a 4 time WC with an equal car).
Once again, the fanbase is unfair, like it was with many other drivers (like Villeneuve, Sutil or even Perez before), it is part of the sport, but it is too much this time.

I love ocon, in my opinion he is aggressive as a a driver and if u like that then u like him if u don't u don't like him. Like all the hate he gets is from fan bases when he has had crashes with others tho lol

I can admit that I'm a huge Esteban fan. He and Carlos are my favorite drivers rn in the grid

@@MrAobrady The guy has amazing racecraft and takes advantage when there's a gap, like Singapore 2023 when he overtook Checo and Fernando

Yeah he’s *always* given me a funny weird vibe. He lets his natural awkward goofiness be a part of his friendly good-guy persona. I don’t trust him, never have. He’s a worm but doesn’t show it in the spotlight because as long as he needs something, I think he’s gonna be low key manipulative.
That Max/Ocon confrontation, Ocon’s body language showed he wasn’t even defending the move he made, it was a laugh in Max’s face with snarky playing dumb like, “What?😃What did I do/What are you gonna do about it.” With his hands up and still walking towards Max saying something with a smile on his face when Max kept walking away pissed. But I bet Max pushed him more than once because of what was coming out of his mouth.
My theory was confirmed after hearing Max talk to Daniel about it. Might’ve been an On The Sofa with Max & Daniel from when they were teammates but I forget which exact vid it was.
Then there’s the Gasly/Ocon childhood stories, which Ocon was never open about it as Gasly was. You’d think if someone was spreading lies about your character, you’d at least want to share your side of the story and clear it up.
Around here is when I began noticing the way he drives against teammates, and was surprised that no one was talking about it and he was only receiving praises.
Then slowly people starting to catch on and I was like, Yes! So it IS a real thing and not just a delusional fabrication made by my distrust of the man boy.
And then like in ‘22 when everyone was speculating who would get the Alpine seat after Alonso/Piastri fiasco, Ocon tried to influence Mick to get the seat which he was open about.
It’s not because he thinks Mick is talented and deserves the seat, but Ocon wanted someone who he knew he could beat while at the same time increasing his own stock.
Can’t remember but must’ve been ‘22 when Ocon said his best mates on the grid were Lance Stroll & Mick Schumacher. I thought, okay how much of that is because no one really likes them so they just hang out with each other, and how much of that is being friends/close to those with money and the Schumacher name.
Kinda strange for a rags to riches guy (well, richer than before when his family would live and travel by caravan) to cling himself onto a the billionaire’s s son and also Michael Schumacher’s son.
I’m just waiting for the big scandal but that might not happen for years. I’m just glad people are catching on.

      Just one thing tho:
Stroll doesnt seem to be really disliked by the grid when it comes to him as a person.
We fans dislike him for being a Nepo-Baby and im sure some one the grid think that as well, but as a dude he seems genuinely chill to hang with.
