I contacted Acer and we refreshed some settings so I hope that it does not happen again. Other than that everything else seems great. Yes, 1) It doesn't look as "gamery" or eye catching as it seems to be, 2) the keyboard is sooo good, while you dont expect a lot just by look 3) touchpad is kinda weird and 4) screen bezels are much more "shiny" due to the texture and plastic used

    Surprisingly insightful review! But how did you get those Lenovo Y540 results? I have totally different results even before undervolting. Also is there really no 144HZ option, I know it’s offered in USA and in Europe as well. Dont get me wrong, Helios 300 is nicely done laptop, if you are not into tweaks (although they are easy to learn), go for it, otherwise Lenovo Y540 can perform even better as showed in Jarrod’s tech video where it beat Helios in 9 of 13 games with same UV and OC. My unit won’t even exceed 67 degrees GPU intensive games. In Europe Y540 with 1660 ti, i7, 144 Hz and 1TB SSD! Costs 200€ less than Helios 300 with same specs but 256 SSD only. So it was no brainer pretty much.

    • @TechFinds
      @TechFinds  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey, thanks!
      Well, i've seen Jarrod's comparison too and i was curious, because previous generations of Legion had pretty bad reviews if it comes to temperatures. Since many people asked me to review/compare Legion Y540 i decided to get one for tests. The thing is that even 2 laptops of the same model will not perform the same and will not have the same thermal managment. This is because of many random conditions like the way the thermal paste was applied, room temperature, the game you play etc. My Legion Y540 ran hotter than Jarrod's unit and i tested it with only undervolt while the Predator was undervolted and overclocked, so that's why the FPS were lower in some games. In the review i mentioned that there is a 144Hz option and i actually had one. It's true that in some European countries it's cheaper than Helios 300 (mine was 300 Euro cheaper than Helios with the same specs), but in the USA the Predator is cheaper and it often goes on sale.
      Btw. what CPU intense games did you play? I tested it in Watch Dogs 2 on very high settings when the CPU usage was 50-60%. For example when i played Dirt Rally 2.0 the temperatures were much lower (65-75 degrees) since it's GPU bound game.

    • @zikky6
      @zikky6 Před 5 lety +1

      Tech Finds You’re right, it all comes down to silicon lottery and decent paste work in factory. Oh I see, how much did undervolting actually helped? I undervolted it on 150 both core and cache but I found it’s way more helpful to put short and long power limits down and most importantly put down turbo ratio limits, that cooled it down way down even more.
      Well I thought I read that there is no 144 hz option in this review, sorry for misunderstanding..
      Btw. Is there Lenovo Y540 review coming soon? :)
      As for the games, I have mentioned GPU intensive in my previous post and overall I haven’t played that many games just yet, I have it for just 7 days now and I was more interested in tweaking and so on. But from those I played: Ghost Recon Wildlands and AC Odyssey, both pretty CPU depending. And Witcher 3 + Far Cry 5 GPU heavy.
      Have a nice day!

    • @TechFinds
      @TechFinds  Před 5 lety

      My Legion was close to 89 degrees on average right out of the box. After undervolting core and cache by -0.150V it was nicely on 84 degrees. Unfortunately the review is not going to appear very soon, because i have a lot of other videos to make before it.

    This is an amazing review! Very professional and definitely underrated. I have a question, I bought a Helios 300 with the RTX 2070 around 6 months ago. But I only started gaming with it this year cause I was using it for editing. However when I was playing certain games like GTA and warzone, my cpu temps reach a constant max of 92 degrees. My GPU is around 70 degrees. This can't be normal can it? If so, is that safe?

      Hey, the G-Sync and TB3 depends on you. It's good to have, and for sure it's an advantage over the Predator, but do you really need it?
      If it comes to thermals undervolting is necessary for this laptop, but in some cases it may not be enough. Sometimes they do Abad job applying the thermal paste in the factory which causes overheating. It applies to every brand, not only HP. Proper repasting with high-end thermal paste should do the trick.

But considering that 2019 Predator can maintain 4.0GHz at low 80's and Zephyrus throttles causing clock speed to drop down to like 3.5 - 3.6GHz then i think that the difference may be noticeable. Hey, the Battlefield V is very CPU dependant game, so it causes high temperatures, but your unit actually runns normally if it comes to thermals. It's normal for laptop to ocasionally hit 90 or over, but if it stays below most of the time it's good. What you can do is you can change the thermal paste for a good one like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, apply more undervolt and play with max fan speed all the time.

      No matter the configuration, this is still the same chassis and the exact same screen. The thing is that screen bleeding is caused by bad production process (too tight frame pressing the edges of the screen) and it vary between laptops. You can find models with GTX 1660Ti with almost no bleeding, or you can get the one where it's noticeable. It makes a nice graphs showing all the data you need like CPU utilization, clock speed, temperature, throttling, TDP, and anything you add to graph. GPU is usually not a problem in laptops, but if you want to check the clock speed and temperatures you can download MSI Afterburner. For your test choose a demanding game which uses lot of CPU and GPU at the same time to see how are the temperatures under combined load. You can use Watchdogs 2 or GTA V, maybe Battlefield V which is more CPU heavy.
