Hendrick Motorsports drivers react to 1986 Riverside NASCAR Cup Series race

  • NASCAR in 1986 was just a bit different than the sport we know today. Back then pit stops were longer, rules were looser, but the driving talent was as strong as ever. Check out what our current drivers thought of the 1986 NASCAR Cup Series road race at Riverside.

The racing event of the summer. Call it the "Bill France Jr. Cup". A four week fight thru ages.
      Race 1 - Gen 3
      Race 2 - Gen 4
      Race 3 - Gen 5
      Race 4 - Gen 6
      Think that would be fun.

@@ncinteriorsplus3520 oh yeah. I agree about local tracks.
In terms of the old old cars. In my area they a class that's for cars older than 58 iirc. Old steering and front suspension. I like the idea but it just seems like 1 car is so much faster than the other. Not really competitive. Some are beautiful cars and they definitely try to avoid tearing them up. Usually a bunch of older guys. Its still cool though

Shouldn't be too difficult to get a fab shop to whip up a front and rear clip to the current cars, but set up like the 80's cup cars. A De Dion rear suspension should give that live axle feel without having to alter the cage for an engine mounted transmission.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned one of the main reasons for the cars sliding around, if not THE main reason: Cup cars ran bias ply tires until switching to radials in 1991. The first Cup race I went to since childhood in the 1960s was North Wilkesboro in September 1991. Won by Dale Earnhardt after Handsome Harry Gant led most of the way before losing his brakes in the last handful of laps. We sat down low in the chicken bone section right at the start/finish line,
so we could look left and seen them in a full 4 wheel drift coming off of 4 and then see the tail end kick out as they dove into 1. Those heavy cars on 12" wide bias ply tires slid all over the place.

I grew up south of Riverside, that place was the bomb! Didn’t need grandstand tickets, you could watch from your car along the esses, then drive across the bridge and watch the straightaway, or turn #6 or #7 or 7a. It was usually hot and dry, and sunny, and dusty. Watched NASCAR, Indy Car, IMSA, SCCA, NHRA, TransAm (when they ran real converted pony cars), F5000.
When they destroyed that place they moved the turn #6 grandstand to Bakersfield at Mesa Marin Speedway

They are right. The springs do nothing but let u change the tires in the pits. On track the cars ride on the shock limiter with 0 suspension movement at all. The cars have 0 suspension there solid on track like a go cart. Basically throw away the springs and shocks and ride on rubber blocks. Watch them on track the cars bounce on the tires and there is no movement of the suspension.
