  • BRICKLAYING - Rat Trap Bond
    Today we talk about the bricklaying bond, rat trap...it is also known as Chinese brick bond. This is a formation of Flemish bond and is the origin of Quetta bond. I show how to build a brick wall out of Rat Trap bond and show you how to lay bricks in this interesting style of bricklaying. Hope you all enjoy

    What I was hoping to see in your video is how you would prevent mortar getting inside the cavities reinforced with rebar and designed to be filled with concrete later on. The rebar is also reinforced horizontally with around 3mm wire according to guides on the net. I'm building a splash pool for the kids in this bond.

    Nice tutorial. It became popular in the late 18th century due to the brick tax. So, anything that reduced the number of bricks was a win. You’re right that it’s not as strong as Flemish or English bond, but it’s good enough for small houses. Many of them are still standing, after all!

    A common place to see this bond is World War 2 pillboxes. They were cheap because they cut down on the number of bricks used, and were incredibly strong when the cavities were filled with steel and concrete.

    It was used in pre hammer drill days because battens nailed into the bed joints with cut nails is correct spacing for tile hanging...

    Respected Laurie Baker Made this Rat trap bond famous among architects and others in India for making sustainable housing has mentioned in his book "A manual of cost cuts for strong acceptable Housing."rat trap bond can be used as a load bearing wall for two storied house construction.
    May all be happy and at ease free from dis-ease.

    Rodian bro,
    The reason people would use this bond is that you use less bricks and less mortar!!
    Pretty simple really and as soon as I started writing this comment, you started to say exactly that.

    We always called them solder courses, every 4 brick in the running bond between inner and outer...but we laid the brick normal not on side like that! This method was used mostly for pure mason house no wood frame on exterior walls of house only plaster to brick on inside, this was before much insulation was used

    My father was laying bricks before / after the war - materials were very scarce, things were very bad, soot was used to supplement cement, very weak mixes used etc, and I'm guessing some of the techniques etc you are querying were born out of the necessity and the shortages of those hard times.

    The concept behind the bond was that it would save on materials and mortar without compromising the strength of the wall. The only time I've ever come across it was in several houses on the same road in Dulwich, south east London, where they'd used it to build the sleeper walls for the ground floor floor joists to sit on/span across.

    • @wolfhachmuth7731
      @wolfhachmuth7731 Před 4 lety

      It's used a lot in india, cos it's quite strong, saves on material, and creates a cavity to keep the heat out.

    Rat trap bond was used mainly by farmers in there outbuildings because it saved 30 per cent in bricks look after the penny’s and the pounds look after there selfs and if the bricklayer did a good job they got a shiny shilling for there work

    Some brick manufactures make 65mm bricks with face surface on the bed face. They can be used as paviors as well. I've used those bricks your using and a pack of frogged bricks usually has a good percentage of solid bricks where the molding process skips a frog mold

      @@RodianBuilds The name comes from the fact that rodents could fall into the cavities and not get out again. Presumably people would hear disembodied squeaking coming from their walls.
