- How to Propagate a Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree Ficus Lyrata (A Complete Beginner's Guide)
In this video, I am breaking down the steps to propagate a fiddle leaf fig tree so you can make baby trees out of cut branches! Plant propagation is the process of growing new plants from a variety of sources: seeds, cuttings, and other plant parts. It’s an easy solution if your existing plant is overgrown or too tall!
Breathe in positive energy and breathe out the negative ones babes.

Please note: Ensure proper drainage by using a pot WITH drainage holes. I did NOT use a pot with drainage holes in this video because I was experimenting with air rooting the plant (removing it from the pot and allowing it to breathe and dry before repotting), which was not stated in the video. Thank you for watching and please let me know if you have any questions when it comes to your FLF 🌿☺️
Did it work?
I really need your help......I have a fiddle leaf fig which has become root bound I tried to re pot it but the root looked very dark brown and impossible to pull apart i just tried to pull as much soil out of the top as I could and then repotted into a larger container with holes in the side so that the plant could dry out before I repot to it's next pot........I'm not sure if I should have cut away the dark roots and I dont quick know what root rot looks like but I'm pretty sure my plant has it as there ware dark dark spots on most of the lower leaves and some of the higher ones as well..........HELP
@@zayzay7906 so I lost my fiddle leaf fig to root rot. But I did buy root rot treatment on amazon. While it was to late to save my fiddle leaf fig with the root rot. It did help my other plants I accidentally overwatered since im a beginner
@@antzgreen awesome.....thank you sooo much
@@zayzay7906 root rot smells. When you pulled your dog out of pot if it had root rot you would smell it. Also when feeling the roots they can sometimes feel softer, but the smell is a dead give away. If it didn’t smell it was probably fine
Oh yes, gardening + home decor. The best combination!
Thank you for explaining your step by step method. By looking at your beautiful plants, its pretty obvious you are doing something right. I'm excited to work on my fiddle fig (got it 6 weeks ago). Hope to see more of your plant videos!
Thank you for watching Lola! These are tips that have worked for me and I’m constantly trying to experiment and try new methods. Will be filming more plant vids in the future!

@@JulieKhuu I have a beautiful and healthy propagation cutting with 7 leaves that I have had in a jar of water for OVER a month now...it just won't grow roots!! It is super healthy but the leaves are pretty flaccid...very soft and drooping. I cut this from the top of my fiddle fig, dipped the cutting into a root hormone powder and have had it in a jar in the window for over a month....it has these tiny little white root looking bits but they haven't grown at all since the beginning and they're not strong..they fall right off if touched. I can't find much info online. Right now I am debating whether I should just pot it in soil with a fertilizer. HELP? lol.
@@dinonuggets9496 Try changing out the water and placing it at a different window with different sunlight babe. I have 4 propagated stems at the same window, only 1 has grown massive roots and the others are a bit slow to catch up. Some take longer than others so don't give up on her! My advice is to not pot just yet, she may grow weaker without roots to soak up the water. Give it another month.
Love this info thank you!!
Do your pots have drainage holes? Most I find don’t and I’m scared to brake them. I’ve tried a couple clay ones and I’ve been very careful about it
This one does not but I definitely recommend that they do. If you don’t air root your plants, purchase smaller pots with drainage holes to place inside the larger ones without it.
Absolutely! It will get root rot if left sitting in water. Plus, I recommend to stay away from Miracle-gro, know issues with bugs in the soil!
Girl, that tree looks like it’s taking over your house! 😂
You sound like my husband 😂
Hubby already nagged her
Julie Khuu how old is that tree and how did you get so many trunks on it?
Dear sister Julie
Your tutorial was seamless n easy to follow.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
God Bless
I will try out to propogate my fiddle leaf fig.
Yea you gave me much inspiration.
Awesome, let me know how it goes Jeff! 🪴
Wow! The best video I have seen on propagating a FL! I have a dwarf FL. I am waiting to see if I can keep it alive before I get a bigger one. I can’t imagine having FL’s as big as yours all around my house. You have inspired me and now am subscribing to your channel!! Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Serious question, i know Fiddles need to drain and the two grey pots you propagated into dont have drainage? Do you plan to change later or am i missing something? Best :)
Hi JC! I've been getting a ton of questions on the drainage/no drainage issue and my fiddle leaf figs have been doing just fine with no drainage pots. I'm not the resident expert when it comes to potting, just trial and error. I believe the amount of light and placement has a lot to do with the outcome. BUT I may just do a side by side test of my propagated fiddle leaf trees (no drain pots vs. pots with drain) in a future video for a comparison. Thanks for sparking this idea!
@@JulieKhuu You do what works for you!
I just asked this question too. Please do a side by side.
Your home has absolutely gorgeous windows!! I'm so jealous because mine is so dark and the roof overhangs the windows....I have no east/west windows that work for plants and a couple small south and north ones..I sooo wish it had more
@ J C Anytime I have drainage holes, all the water drains out and I have to water more as the soil dries quickly.
Ha! I’m lucky to have 3 LEAVES ON MY FIDDLE LEAF FIG!
Lol we all gotta start somewhere! 🌿
Mine is down to 6 😅😅😩
It's really helped me out to make another pot plants from my original plant...Thank you ~The Trinity Bless & Protect you and your loved ones at this stage😄❤
Awesome! Now you’ll get addicted 🌿☺️
Your videos are easy to watch, Thanks
I always thought these trees needed drainage. I have a bunch of cute pots like yours that I been neglecting since they do not have drainage holes
I have a few that have drainage and a couple other pots with no drainage and they both seem to be doing just fine babe! You can try to find a plastic pot WITH drainage to put INSIDE the ones without? Test them out and please let me know how it goes! xx
Don’t these pots supposed to have holes for drainage
Pots with drainage is recommended, but I have had no issues with my pots that don't have drainage. They remain healthy, but I also believe the amount of sunlight and water helps to keep them that way. I am a plant novice and have only shared what works for me. Thank you for stopping by Yolanda!
@@JulieKhuu This is TERRIBLE advice for most any plant. As a 'novice' you should be doing more research before making these videos. God forbid another first time plant owner follows this and kills their beautiful tree.
Great video Julie! I am not a plant novice and I can tell you that plants can grow just fine in pots without drainage holes. It is so unfortunate that people think that everything is one size fits all. Drainage holes are because people tend to over water their plants and not have enough air circulation or sunlight to compensate for this. Drainage holes are not a must but a backup plan.
@@joelledeveau5517 Wow, even worse comment than hers. Please don't give your "advice" to anyone else.
Yolanda Shultz I think porous planter helps, I’ve grown flf in ceramic pots without drainage holes and it’s been working perfectly:)
I just tried this! Thank you for being so detailed. I’ll check in very soon!
Yes, let me know how it goes Gilbert! 🙌🏻
Thank you for sharing brilliant tips for those gorgeous plants!happy gardening watching from Japan!😊💕🌿
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Super helpful, excellent video quality and gurl, you are a whole snack!! Thanks for the tips :)
Lol thanks for watching and hope you'll be back to check out my other design vids!
Wow! This is very helpful. I got a fiddle leaf tree that is way too tall for our house and have spent the whole day trying to get info on how to trim it without success. Lots of 'info' but most are too complicated for people like myself that don't know much about plants. Your video is much easier for me to understand and I feel like I can cut the long branches and regrow them. Thanks!
Let me know how it grows! Good luck 🪴
I'm excited I want to try to cut propagate my Ficus Fiddle Leaf Fig. Thanks for this video I feel confident I can do it.
Yes you can do it! 🙌🏻 It’s so easy and addicting once you get started 🌿

Julie Khuu I used to live in OC, moved to Boston 5 years ago. This is a great place to thrift store hunting. They practically give things away, some in road sides.
Thank you. I did it today as a test and your advice is good!
That’s awesome!! Hope it works out! 🌿
Girl !! You definitely came through with this one didn’t get a chance to say what I’d like to see next but this was definitely it!! Gorgeous love all of your work!! I will definitely be sharing this I learned a lot!! 🙌🏽🗣🗣🥰👍🏽
Awesome babe!!! So glad it's helping you! KNOW YOUR ROOTS will be a regular series so anything else you want to know about indoor plants/ plant care, lemme know! xx
Julie Khuu yes when you do more of these. I would still like to see more beginners friendly. Also what type of dirt to use if I can’t afford the more expensive. Also when you water your plants for the week and sometimes they still look like they didn’t get enough how do I know if it’s watered enough?? Thank you for everything in advance god bless you!!
@@IAMKINYA Got it, more simple steps, beginner basics. You can buy the cheapest soil you can find- Walmart has great options for large bags for $5! Just make sure it's for indoor pots. When you water plants, the soil needs to appear soaked. You can also dip a chopstick in there to see if there's dry patches, will def include these in the next vid. Thanks so much for the great feedback babe! xx
Great tutorial. Now I can do it myself, thanks!
Awesome 🙌🏻 Let me know how it goes Elaine!

Wow, I have such fiddler leaf tree envy watching your tall plant. I would kill to have the big one and I'd never trim it, just let it grow. I had one years ago and loved it, but when I moved, I had to let it go. I just acquired a new one a week or so ago and cannot wait to see it grow big like yours.
I had to trim mine down, my ceilings are too low! Good luck with your new baby! I’m sure you are the best plant parent Hang!
