  • My first attempt on the pipe and tabor. The pipe in question is a three-hole affair and the tabor is the drum which has a hemp snare. It's very early days!! I play a tune of mine called Medieval Christmas.

Fun fact, sumerians had a similar pipe and drum, but they usually played 2 pipes at the same time and another person played the drums(altho, it could be possible that they did tplay it like the tabor and pipe too) they had that kind of instruments from before written language as far as we know... And that means the concept was born in prehistoric times

Bravo on taking on yet another instrument - or two. It's amazing how quickly you can make real music with them. Loking forward to Vlog 2.

Not bad for a newby to pipe and tabor. The lower G or Bb pipes are easier to play as they need less air pressure and the fundamentals (lowest notes) are harder to play. The G is a pleasure to plays compared to the D to start with. The only problem is the holes are a bit further apart - I get around this by using ring finger and index for the top holes to make it easier to finger. The G (and Bb) are less squeaky and lower pitched and better on you ears. The easiest to play is the Susato Oriole model in G.
I use a large ME side drum attached to my waste. Or you can use a small chidren's drum or tambourine to hand off your arm.

Ooh I'm definitely going to have to try this! I'm going to a pipe and tabor festival in Arbucies at the beginning of November, and I'm supposed to be learning to play a couple of tunes on pipe beforehand, but...I haven't.

Why am I constantly picking up the same instruments as you do? First the melodeon, than the concertina and now the pipe & tabor? :D Great to have your video guidance again. :)

Ah, I think you normally play the pipe a fourth above the fundamental note, so a D pipe is most often played in G.
