    just subscribed, happy owner of a 2003 Grande, 1KZ-Te, bought 5ys ago, with 185km odo. have done a few mods, 2in lift, Airbagman bags on the rear, new 2.75 exh, winch bar and winch, 3/4 rack, uhf, light bars, Baja Driving lights, dual batt, Kaon door table and rack. Now doing a full egr clean out, new time belt,pump and rollers, new injectors, heat bulbs, and adding that same hood scoop., will look at turbo upgrades/ fixes as time goes by.

    Great video mate, i have a 120 as well and have done almost all mods except Lockers and Lift, tossing up between which one to get and which one to drop, as i am spending $3k on all new AMD PC parts hahahaha.

    Awesome work Todd. Love the unpretentious down to earth info you are sharing. Just traded our 03 SV8 commie on a 06 120 (hoping to pick up next monday due to covid travel restrictions). Went the 1gr-fe 4l v6 route. I don't suppose you know what differences there are between the diesel and petrol models apart from the obvious. I'm talking, drive train, suspension etc. Cheers mate , keep the content coming. Fan from over the ditch in NZ. P.s if you search CZcams for far north New Zealand 4x4 you will see my back yard and the reason the commie just isn't cutting it lol

      Good choice with the V6 prado mate. I hear plenty of good things about them.
      In terms of differences, I believe the transmission crossmember is different (which affects what side steps you can fit), different diff ratios and different radiators, but apart from that they are pretty much the same underneath.

      The bonnet scoop is from a 2015 SR5 hilux which I got from a wreckers. But any scoop of around the same size should be fine.

      Very true mate, especially when not set up or serviced correctly. On the Prado it caught a lot of the oily blow by and I was happy with it. Also engine parts were cheap and it was an easy engine to work on.
      I wouldn't run one on my LC200 though, too much risk if things go wrong.

    My favourite prado video so far. I've only just got my first prado (and first 4wd). I'm curious about your back table and pantry holder, how did you attach it to the back door? Do you have any design tips or just draw it up and make it?

      Hi mate, thanks for the feedback! Yeah I just attached it using bolts through the plastic door skin, with a sandwich plate on the back. The main weight of the table is taken up through the straps, which are also attached into the steel of the door through the plastic.
      In terms of advice, I would just start as simple at determining the size of your table, getting some hinges, then using some webbing or string for your support straps. It can be as elaborate or simple as you like, using whatever materials you desire. Just make sure there is enough room inside the cargo area for the table once it is attached, so it isnt going to foul on any drawers in the rear.

    Your Upright pantry drawer is one of the best ideas I've seen. Love it.
    In NSW having anything extrude from the frame of the bull bar is illegal. How heavy you offset the spoties

      The spotlights protrude about 20mm. Not ideal I know, but for someting rounded and made of plastic, I would say it's a lesser of the evils that can protrude.

    Shout out from loads of miles away - Kenya. Excellent run through your built. I own a 04 Prado 120 in white and I have some exterior mods done (bullbar, roof rack, 2" lift, MT tyres). Now looking at adding the camping gear. You've provided me with much needed inspiration on the setup in the rear. Especially the water tank - how many litres is it by way?

      My water tank is 23L, but I always carry at least 5l of water extra to that throughout the car in water bottles.

      Thanks mate. Source a genuine scoop from either a wreckers or Toyota themselves. Then measure a million times, to get it to sit over the intercooler as square as possible, then drill your corners and cut the bonnet with an angle grinder. Its nerve wracking but the results are worth it!

    How’s the bonnet glare with the stedi curved led lightbar ?
    Been thinking of mounting the stedi slimline 42 inch lightbar underneath my roof rack but have not gone ahead as yet

      Didn't get any glare as the light bar sat higher than the windscreen and has a very distinct lower cut off, so it didn't even light up my bullbar.
      Definitely recommend the ST2K lightbars

      Hi mate, thanks for your feedback!
      The bottom of the ladder is held in place by some shaped steel brackets, which curve to match the shape of the inner wheel arch. Then its bolted through the body skin in two places, to give it a firm grip.
      Lots of corrugations, jumping on the ladder and offroad driving later, and it hasn't moved an inch!

    Great videos and love all your advice. I recently was driving on a fire trail and managed to all of it in AWD. Am I putting strain parts or should I Keep it in 4WD? I know how they binned up if the wheels don’t get the chance to move independently.

      Thanks mate.
      Anytime I'm offroad I switch into low range. It gives me heaps more torque, better low speed control, and locks the centre diff so that I have a better split of power between the front and rear axles.
      The only time I don't use low range offroad is on a hard surface like a big rock outcrop, as it won't allow the wheels to spin to unbind the diff when turning.
      I would always advise using low range when offroad just for the greater control and reduced strain on the torque converter.

    When you bought the car at 300k did it have a catch can installed? I hear many conflicting information about catch cans. Do you think catch cans are essential?

      No it didn't, I added it on probably around the 400k mark. Definitely worth it when you see how much oil they catch. Inexpensive and easy to install

    with adjustable upper control arms and a bigger lift with more clearance would you say you could fit bigger tyres without any rubbing? eg. 285/75/17 from 265/70/17 ? I got the same car and want to fit much bigger muddies but struggling to figure out what exactly needs to be done to squeeze bigger tyres on

      Yes I could go a bigger size tyre, but the rims also need to be changed. When I do finally look at some play tyres for the Prado they will be a minimum 295/70/17. Bigger than that and you need to trim body mounts and things.

    Hi,
    I did a 2" Dobinson IMS lift on my Prado 150.
    My tires are still stock at 265/65/R17.
    I want to upgrade it to all terrain but keep the tire size same as stock 265s.
    I go for offroading on deserts.
    What do you advise?

      Hi Kane,
      I would probably advice a 265/70/R17 tyre in an all terrain for what you have described. You will gain a bit of clearance under your diffs, without the need to change your rims or UCAs.
      The same width tyre will also help to reduce the power loss you would get from a 285/70 or larger tyre.

      Thanks, I've extended the rear diff breather, and the front is extended by factory up next to the starter battery, but I havent dont the transmission breather yet.

    Hey mate. Sweet rig. Did you ever run 265/65s and, if so, did you notice any negatives (fuel economy, gearing, rubbing) going to 265/70s?

      Hi Jarrah, no not particularly. I did trim my mudflaps a bit, and on full compression and steering lock the tyres just touched the chassis. But this could be solved with extended bump stops.
      The Speedo became perfect, power was still there, and I didn't notice any significant increase in fuel consumpton.

      Cheers mate. Mask it up, take your time drawing a neat line around where you want to cut, then remove the bumper and cut with an air body saw or angle grinder.

      Hi mate, I'm using a Turbosmart Boost control tee, combined with a GM 3 bar map sensor and the Torque Pro app for monitor boost levels

      Hi mate, the indicators in the bullbar are from Ebay, while the foglights are from Stedi. You can get the LED indicators from ARB though, straight replacement

    Hey @todd - Loving all the videos - Question: I just bought a 120 and am about to pull the trigger on bash plates. Do you use, recommend, or have ever wished you had a bash plate for the main fuel tank?

      Hi Dan, welcome to the channel!
      Bash plates are a must on these vehicles due to how low slung they are.
      The fuel tanks already come with factory bash plates on them, but the main fuel tank under the passenger side of the car does seem to have a weak bash plate. Kaon do a great replacement, but it isn't cheap. Bash plates are sacrificial in the end, and mine have taken a great battering over the years of driving tough tracks, but the fuel tank is still fine.
      If you are planning to do a lot of tough tracks with rocks, tree roots, mud, etc, then perhaps it would be a good idea to invest in them if you have the money. Otherwise, I'd be inclined to invest my money elsewhere.

    Nice rig Todd! I have a 1kz with 400k on it and Im going down similar roads to you with the exception of having done a muffler delete instead of full 3 inch exhaust, tune-it chip, OBD reader and an intercooler fan. Just waiting on 3bar Map, boost-t and injectors to arrive. I Already have big mouth Hilux scoop, oil pressure, EGT and water temp ready to go in.. Was fitting your scoop much of an issue?

      Nice one mate. You need to take your time with the scoop install, just to get it to sit right on the bonnet. The Scoop has a flat base and the prado bonnet is curved, so you need to use wide brackets to help pull the bonnet skin up to meet the scoop nicely.

    How much did you gain from going from factory boost to 18psi? Trying to get a boost controller shipped up to us here in Botswana. Do you have and EGT gauge? Cheers!

      Yeah its much more punchy at around 2500-3000rpm now. No EGT gauge yet.

      @@offroadcrusader I gave up on the boost controller. Borders shut and we can't get one shipped in for a while. I made a fitting with a 2mm hole as a boost leak in a T. Added a small restriction before it as well. Sitting at 13.5 psi now. 5US ;)

      Assuming the engine is all up to date with servicing and things, I'd be checking for a boost leak. Intercooler gasket on the turbo side, throttle body gasket on the manifold side, all the vacuum lines around the MAP sensor.
      A full intake clean will definitely help if you are down on power.

      Hi mate, its just a generic 3 bar map sensor from ebay. I believe its a GM product, but theyre a common unit to mod with.

      Hi mate, the dogs sleep inside the car on the back seat. They like having an enclosed space to return to, and that way I don't have to worry about things in the night distracting them or hurting them.
      The smaller pup I sometimes take with me in the RTT if its just us, but otherwise its too awkward trying to carry 30kg up a ladder when its wriggling haha.

      Genuine Toyota are always going to be the best option. However if you are proficient at changing the wheel bearing assembly yourself then a cheap unit from ebay will suffice for a number of years.

    Hey Todd I went back to check again on Ep 2 to see the desk install, the audio drops out at ~13.45 as you are explaining removal of centre consol, any chance you could fix this issue ? Like you vids on Prado 120, must admit I am stealing some ideas for mine , thanks

      Hi Peter,
      Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you.
      After reviewing that video, it seems that a copyright issue has cut all audio where a song has played, meaning that the song no longer infringes on copyright, but also that I have a silent section in the video. Unfortunately without remaking the video, there isn't anything I can do to reverse this, and the original file no longer exists.
      I will endeavour to fix or replace the video as soon as possible, but in the mean time if you have any questions regarding the removal of the centre console removal, feel free to ask.
      And thank you for your support, you are more than welcome to use my ideas haha.

      Most stuff ARB sell is trustworthy, and if it isn't they don't sell it for long. I wouldn't mind their recovery points, but my ARB bullbar already has recovery points built into the mounts.

      No just the fixed extended lower rears with the curve in it. They help allow for better rear end flex and also help centre the rear diff in the wheel arch

    What’s your recommendation between a petrol or a diesel Prado? I’m in the market at the moment and am still trying to decide

      I myself got a V6 prado it's really strong engine, bit heavy on fuel but well worth it

      My recommendation would be diesel = long distance touring. Petrol = short distance commute/weekender 4wd trips. Both engines have their pros and cons, but I believe that if you are going to reap the benefits of a turbo diesel, you need to be driving it long distances or be giving it hell every now and then. If not, go the petrol.

      No lockers mate, just open diffs front and rear.
