Watched it all in one go. I'm also a Greek Mythology geek. I loved this. Such a good plot with many arcs all coming together in the end. Brilliant cast with top performances. And yes lots of Greek Mythology easter eggs and in jokes. Brilliant show, loved it.
Prometheus’ narration really helped with the early complexity, giving just enough information to reassure me that I wasn’t watching Lost and the strands would come together - which they do. I loved it.
Not sure how easy it is to find now, but there is a New Zealand tv show "Almighty Johnsons" (premiered in 2011) which is "Norse Gods walk among us". Will always have a special place in my heart.
@@MrFubberAside from a couple decent moments, it really felt like high school level writing and character development. Acting was good, but Netflix has a terrible track record in recent years on delivering on shows that start off with good casting and good premises. It just fell flat for me. I don't care about the characters, and the writers TELLING me I should care about the characters doesn't make me care about the characters.
I agree that it was a bit slow for the first 4 episodes. After this all the different plot strands come together and it takes off. Now I can’t wait for there to be a season 2 🙏 I love Greek mythology and the casting of this show is excellent ❤
I’m 2 episodes in but a huge fan of Jeff Goldblum (hopefully I meet him some day) and KAOS is a load of fun. They blend drama, comedy and fantasy in a really neat way and it’s brilliantly cast. I believe it was meant to be Hugh Grant as Zeus but he had scheduling issues but I’m sure he would have worked just as well. They’re both very similar in my eyes. Great show!
And there will be even more similarities with season 2 of Sandman, which should cover Seasons of Mists, which features loads of gods in quite crucial roles. KAOS does sound fun, though.
Just saw the first episode and I totally agree with Mark. On the surface it's great with loads going on. But somehow it ultimately comes off as a bit lightweight. A bigger dose of Succession would have helped.
Struggled with episode 1. A bit fragmented. Editing and direction is not consistent and feels like different strands are from different shows. It also has the sense that they are to giving screen time to each actor according to their individual contracts. Unlikely to be renewed. Very happy to continue watching. For now.
I loved this show! Powered through it over 2 evenings. All the acting is phenomenal. The story is interesting and philosophical. In fairness I already know a lot about Greek mythology and classical studies. I finished and am hoping for a second season!
I enjoyed it. The cast was varied, I liked them all. I didn’t binge it all in one sitting, I don’t recommend that either. You should let it settle on you a bit before finishing. Prometheus breaking the 4th wall was fun.
No. Ronnie Biggs’ song is ‘No one is Innocent’. The ‘Cash From Chaos’ line comes from the song ‘The Great Rick ‘n’ Roll Swindle’. I don’t know who delivered the line but it wasn’t Edward Tudor Pole.
Mark: I just looked through your channel to see whether you had reviewed The Terror (on Netflix) and it doesn't look like you have reviewed it. Are you planning on reviewing it? I'd love to hear what you think (of the first season; from what I gather it's the best season). I so enjoy listening to your reviews!
As someone who doesn't give af about Greek mythology I found it entertaining. The dry humor and casual brutality kept me watching. The story is whatever
I found that Goldbloom and his peers did a much better job (Hera, Poseidon, Hades) than the younger cast who (except Dionysius) lack charisma, looks or energy to hold a scene. Apart from that I found the show aesthetically very lacking- casting and cinematography just made everyone look less believable as romantic heroes or mighty gods. Sandman and American Goddess are much better done from that perspective.
I like it but I think the pacing is a little off is all. I think that is the thing Mark is trying to pinpoint. There is plenty there to interest but its like a bit of a slow drip of everything so far, its good, but the slower pace means there is nothing really grabbing you and dragging you headlong the way you get with some shows. Like Mark though I am only halfway through am going to watch the rest for sure, so its definitely getting the plot hooks in. I am hoping it wraps up well by the end, nothing wrong with a slow burn when it builds to a big payoff.
Ha! I JUST bought that book! The title caught my eye and I was 2 chapters in, still in the bookstore when I realized I should just BUY it. Can’t wait to finish it. Really hope it’s better than this show, which had promise but was so predictable by episode 5🙄
I have watched half of the first episode and I don't feel hooked... Like Mark, I love the premise, I adore Jeff Goldbloom, i saw that Eddie Izzard is in it (huge draw for me). Am discovering the actress who plays Zeus's wife and am already under her spell. Very impressive rest of the cast. But while it has me intrigued, and I do want to love it, it's not grabbed me.
I’m 4 episodes in and although it’s perfectly palatable, it’s nowhere near as good as the sum of its parts would suggest. Rather ponderous, story hasn’t got going, or at east what has has been paltry. It reminds me more or American Gods which was purely style over substance. And I hate to say this but it seems quite cheaply made. The YA Percy Jackson show has exactly the same Gods-roaming-modern-day-without-being-seen shtick but was infinitely more entertaining. I’ll keep watching due to my inability to not finish things and the impressive cast but so dar this ain’t a scratch on EotFW.
Not really sure how you can review it having watched half the episodes. Ok it’s 7 hours ish but it’s all building..I guess if you ain’t gripped you ain’t gripped but if it’s not the whole story how can you know if you like it or not?
Sounds like a bit of a rip off of the book God's Behaving Badly. They even made a film of it starring Sharon Stone but it was never released due to testing poorly.
Me too, just ended the 3rd episode now and the scene with Mions and Poseidon in the bathtub was what had it for me, I was already hating everything. Not catching up after this exercise
The direction is leaden and without flair and the cinematography is flat and lifeless which bogs it down. There needs to a lightness of touch and a genuine sense of anarchy to give it some spirit but that is sadly missing. A dull waste of a lot of talent and money.
There are several manga/anime series that already did this premise (e.g. Saint Young Men -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Young_Men). I'm glad this version sounds good and will get a decent audience, but I hope it's not too derivative.
The thing that really set this apart for me is that they actually do the myths... We see 3 myths play out in full, recontextualised but authentic to the original myths

One of the best written; best cast and best acted thing I have seen in a very long time.

Didn't David Thewlis play Ares a few years ago? He can have a God-off with Anthony Hopkins and Liam Neeson.
I bet Mark Kermode's changed his mind after episode 5. I felt the same way at the point he's reviewing it.
somehow your description makes it sound awful but I have watched it all and I think its superb, quite unique.
1st episode is quirky world building. by the 3rd you sense that there is more to this than just quirk. by the 5th, its deeper and you are on board
