The Takacs always manage to put some Tabasco on their classics. Spicy hot! Not for the genteel. I love their take on things.

Big thanks for sharing this set of polished gems of Papa Haydn. I especially liked the one that started with a majestic theme and developed into a set of variations-No. 3 ‘Emperor.’ The theme really haunts me-in a good way. Some beautiful playing too.

Your quite right, this set of string quartets Opus 76 by Joseph Haydn (sic) is one of the greatest sets of quartets ever written.

      Pepe Haydn
As a body of works, Haydn’s quartets have occasionally been equalled; in truth, they have never been surpassed.
The 68 string quartets of Joseph Haydn represent one of the absolute pinnacles of western classical music and are individually and collectively an astonishing achievement of inspired genius, sustained incredibly, over a period of just short of half a century.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 I absolutely agree. In our vacuous, frivolous spiritually bereft world, the Haydn quartets are an oasis of beauty, a treasure of peace and profound consolation for those who seek solace.

One should be extremely careful in the use of superlatives. I thank my third grade teacher for that knowledge.

Beethoven's op 135, Slow movement: in dialogue with op 76 1 mov 2 in a more sophisticated interplay between the Instruments but not superior in depth, beauty and Emotion to this Haydn's jewel.

Agreed. I'm listening to see if it is a good or a bad thing for this performance. It makes one think of quartets and chamber music versus large orchestral forces: is it appropriate to play repertory for the one in a hall designed for the other? What about when a producer wants to maximize profit by getting the biggest hall to accommodate a large audience for a concert that would be acoustically better in a smaller venue?
