- With almost every single Spider-Man game under our belt here on Retro Rebound, it's fitting that we begin to wrap things up with reviewing Spider-Man 2. While I prefer Spider-Man 1 at the end of it all, the sequel delivers some of the greatest fan service, combat, and spectacle that the series has ever seen.

This game really made me appreciate kraven cause i just use to think "dude is just a really good hunter" but this guy is an actual threat in the game
Yes he is. The fights against him are very fun, and his hunters are dastardly goons
Kraven is a character that could easily be a superhero, but enjoys the challenge of being a villian. I love it
right like he is so mencing he is barrly in the game.
dude was in the late stages of his sickness and still killed super villains. overpowered black suit spider man and fought on equal grounds against venom.
I have to say, while I think the first game had a more personal and emotional story, Kraven was absolutely phenomenal. He didn’t have as big a role as Ock, I think how they used him was so clever. It set up the venom section of the final act so well.
Kraven is the best character in the game!
I seriously expected Kraven to die but for the symbiote to then choose him over Harry cause he is a stronger host, before Venom you know..

So instead of fighting dangerous criminals or monsters, in this game spider man spends his time helping one GAY guy to ask out another GAY guy.
And you can't even go away when they meet , you are FORCED TO WATCH their interaction.
And this is just one example of all the WOKE, SOCIAL JUSTICE , LEFTIST nonsense in this game... omg.
My biggest complaint is that Venom was treated like a cliche "take over the world" villain. What made him so cool in the comics is how personal of a threat he was to Peter and how he became his nemesis.
Yeah, we definitely think differently on this one.
My biggest compliment is that they didn't redo that story beat for the 8th or 9th time. It was refreshing to get a completely different rendition of Venom compared to nearly the exact same one we keep getting in the 616 version, Ultimate version, Maximum Carnage version, Spider-Man 3 the video game version, the multiple cartoon versions, the Spider-Man: Friend or Foe version, and the Spider-Man 3 movie version as well. Plus others that I probably forgot by now.
Having a different take for the first time in decades was refreshing to me.
But each their own, of course.
I kinda think thats what makes this Venom unique. Because the host is harry osborn and not Eddie brock, therefore their motivation should be a bit different. I liked how Venom was almost “friendly” towards Peter trying to get him to joij his cause instead of just finding every opportunity to ruin his life like Brock Venom

I didn't view it as a simple "takeover the world scheme". It really is at the end of the day but Venom isn't pure evil, just insanely twisted. He's not like Cletus Kasady who just wants to burn the world because it's there, Venom genuinely believes humanity is better off living inside symbiotes. He has Harry's memories and doesn't distinguish them from his own as they share one body, so it's not like he hates all humans. In his mind he's fulfilling Emily Osborn's idea for a healthy world everyone could live in. Besides the lack of free will I hate to admit he's probably right. Symbiotes do make their hosts strong and healthy, and probably wouldn't litter or pollute. That said a full scale alien invasion is still bad business.

The side missions gave us wraith, carnage, chameleon, and mysterio. As well as friendly neighborhood missions that were charming and sweet so idk what you’re talking about. The side missions was much better in this game than the first

I’m just advocating for activities beyond checklists in an open world. I never mentioned an issue with the villains that appear in the game through that content.
I'm pretty sure wraith and carnage will be the dlc for this game.. I like the cheeky conversation she had after the last mission where she says it may take months or years.. But after seeing the ending I don't think spiderman 3 will focus on symbiotes so it would make sense that yuris story continue in the dlc like it did for the first game.

Lol Miles side missions were so excruciating to get through. Literally so painfully positive it was saccharine.
Carnage was a terrible reveal too. I actually thought in the second Flame mission, “not a chance that Insomniac is THIS hack and desperate that the redhead villain is going to be Cletus” and lo and behold, it did not fail to disappoint.
I loved the first game but I loved this one a lot more. Loved the story and the addition of the web wings.

Don't Buy This Game people, its just bad
so many issues in it:
- Spanish language completely butchered for "inclusion"
- ESG company blackrock has 7% of sony stocks and it shows its influence
- performative pandering that they can't even get right
- like the flag in Mile's room or taiyaki stand that can't even figure out Taiyaki isn't a pretzel
- Mary Jowl face and androgynous body type cause femininity is seen as bad these days
- Peter Parker emasculated constantly to push up Miles and Mary Jowl
- Miles literally has no reason to exist
- All they do with miles is remove Peter's agency in his own story, - Peter gets beat up then Miles saves him to show he's "important" when really its just devaluing Peter's ability to make miles look better
- MJ stealth sections ridiculously overpowered to make her sections seem good when really its laughable
- Black cat doesn't get missions, neither does wraith as playable but time for terrible MJ sections
- Black cat retcon to bi and having a gf so the entire time she's manipulating Peter and causing stress in his home life for no good reason, also devaluing her care to her supposed GF they made up just now, legitimately makes her a terrible character now
- Kraven and venom wasted to push more time to ESG and social politics
- Mile's side missions are mediocre from helping someone ask someone out for prom to graffiti art, one is with two gay guys and the other with a deaf girl cause "inclusion over storytelling" and its so telling
- fight club girl beating up a guy twice her size while he begs, just misandry in a nutshell
- museum mission only there to say the funding gets taken away by EVIL WHITE GUY BUSINESS OWNER cause that's all they always do white = bad always to these writers
and of course Scream fight of Peter being emasculated, insulted, while he begs for forgiveness from his "queen" (second sony game to emphasize that idea, other was GoW Ragnarok Freya speech) and she saves HERSELF cause she's a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER

I dont know if anyone has said it yet but you can actually change the color of the dodge and parry display in the settings. And slow down the pace of the fights too. The accessibility is amazing
I had to use the accessibility for some of the chase sequences. It is a great feature.

I felt as though Peter was extremely nerfed numerous times throughout the story simply to help the plot but it really demeans him as a 10+ year spiderman. I also wish they did more with the symbiote in terms of animations. Swing styles.
Walk styles. Dodge animations. Even the basic combo stays the same. Outside of the attack abilities and black webbing there isn't much to differentiate what is suppose to be the beloved symbiote suit and regular ol spidey. Web of shadows nailed the symbiotes move set perfectly. However Outside of those minor complaints I find the game to be a masterpiece. I love this and it's been worth the wait.
I agree the symbiote needed more 100% but in my own head canon it's not that pete is nerfed for plot he's nerfed by life. He never got to get over aunt mays death hes drowning in debt and trying to balance his relationship a normal life and crime fighting. after 10 years I'm sure this stuff is getting to be too much hence why it ends with him taking a break. I think it make sense for him to not be on his A game and also helps with making it feel like miles should even be there.

I loved this game so much. I personally really enjoy the wing webs and didn’t feel it detracted. For me, this is Insomniac showing off what they’re really capable of and delivering the true spider man experience they’d been wanting to.
The first one felt special because we finally got a true AAA experience that lets you BE Spider Man. I don’t mind the shorter runtime as well, not everything needs to be this massive odyssey.

After completing the game and sitting on it, I grew to love it even more. I think it far surpasses it’s predecessors on every level and there being a little bit of predictability doesn’t hurt it imo. That’s the biggest flaw I’ve seen people label and I personally don’t think a good story needs crazy twists and turns.

As someone who doesn’t read the comics but likes to keep up with what’s going on in them I will say there are certain things I know about what has happened that I did not think they would do in this game. The whole thing with venom at the end was completely unexpected. I honestly thought they was going for a normal venom story until I saw a certain logo haha. The only thing I had a theory about really was that anti venom was going to appear at some point since both venom and Martin li was in the game. I just wasn’t sure how they would do it or who it would be. I did know where it was going as soon as they mentioned Peter still having symbiot in him though haha
Love you Matty but there were plenty of QTEs in the original. I actually felt like they were equal or a little less this go around. I do agree though that they should cut them back a little bit more.
Insomniac doesn’t miss. Everything is fun in this game, even the side-missions.

I really enjoy the game but it honestly does feel quite short. My grandmother is hospital and that’s where most of my time has been spent and I got the platinum yesterday. But I’m happy it was all quality over quantity.
The MJ missions has a massive improvement in quality in this game in my opinion. It went from me hating the MJ missions in the first game, to literally thinking to myself “I would actually enjoy a little spinoff MJ game that plays like this” in this one. Massive improvement.

I’ve never had a game make my jaw drop so often and consistently. I loved it I couldn’t get over scream, fighting Peter, the anti venom suit with genius lore set up by the first game with me negative..the web wings are so fun to use and for me it doesn’t take away from my love for swinging. Only problems with the game was mysterio not actually being mysterio, that took away from the boss fight for me. And I don’t like how OP miles is to Peter, I love the fight but I don’t think miles should of been able to kick his ass with the symbiote suit, I think that would of been a perfect time for black cat to come back in to help miles so her appearance earlier pays off and wasn’t so much like a cameo

Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and Sony Santa Monica's design philosophy is the polar opposite of Fromsoft's or Nintendo 1st party's. It's very curated with lots of cutscenes and QTEs, apparently it's what's worked for them over the last decade+ and they're probably not gonna change that anytime soon.
They're story driven games. OF course it's going to have lots of cutscenes. A souls-like won't have that much cutscenes because it's not video game. The problem with Insomniac is really the lack of innovation between these games.
It’s a spectrum for sure. You have god of war on one side and Mario wonder on the other. Personally I like both for different reasons.

honestly that mission of harry and peter at their old high school is some of the best storytelling i've personally seen in a video game to date. i loved peter's story - but I definitely agree that miles's wasn't as fleshed out.

I liked the puzzles in the Insomniac Spider-Man games. I dont think it’s the dev’s lack of faith in them; I think it’s their recognition that most gamers aren’t patient
Me being one of them 😅. Every puzzle I got pissed then instantly relieved to see these were mostly one offs.

I think they could've done a bit more with Miles's story - but I think balancing two major narratives would've made it crowded so I can see why Miles was more of a supporting role in the narrative this time and they decided to mainly focus on Peter/Harry
Some of your complaints can be turned off in the settings, lol. Qte's can be turned off. Also, the skip puzzle feature was added in the first game, and they brought it back here. Makes replaying the game more enjoyable. Miles story arc was great, too. He goes from wanting revenge to helping a villain save Peter and the city. His story was beautiful and was paced incredibly well. Not the first time I heard people complain about Miles, and I genuinely wonder if they played the same game😂
This game means the world to me and I just would wana say thanks to Insomniac. Perfect or not I feel the love for the character.

i really love the game, i platinumed it earlier today. the shorter runtime is not a bad thing per se, i also love miles and his side arc of (spoilers)
martin li and forgiving him for what he did. peter also ended up getting this badass anti-venom suit too because of it! my only gripe though is i wish it had ng+ on launch. at least we know it's coming in a future bug patch along with DLC in the near future. im so hyped for it

Loved getting the plat in this game. Did not feel like a grind and none of it felt like it overstayed it's welcome.
I just finished the game (main story) last night. I'd say that overall, I prefer the first game, but man did this one have me HOOKED during its big moments. I thought the back half/last third of this one was incredibly intense and made me not want to put the controller down. I just wanted to continue seeing where the story was going. Predictable? Yeah, that's fair, but how we got there was incredible. Insomniac really gets it. This has truly become my favorite iteration of the character, and I'm so excited to see where they continue to take it. Especially because I think we know where the third one is heading. I'm intrigued to see their take on that (iykyk). Overall I'd say, Spider-Man 1 was more powerful and grounded. Spider-Man 2 was more spectacle and bombastic. Both games are tremendous in their own rights.

@@kingspeech2240 I could see where you’re coming from with Miles Morales. The first half of SM2 felt like it was more about building the open world activities to fill out the game. I agree that it really didn’t get going until the half way point, and once it did, I was hooked. I still really enjoyed it, but it didn’t feel as complete from front to back as SM1 and MM did.
One thing I would’ve loved is a villain mission wheel much like Arkham Knight. I think as a long time Spider-Man fan I agree I’m pretty burnt out of these “clear out these hideouts” missions. In Batman something as simple as The Riddler leaving riddles for you to scan easter eggs was so enjoyable. I hope for a Spider-Man 3 they lean more into fewer purposeful side missions rather than a bunch of stuff to complete. Otherwise, I really loved this game. Final few missions kinda dragged for me compared to the first one. That final boss fight against Doc Ock was perfect. But they nailed Venom so that makes up for it in my book.

I personally enjoy quick time events, makes me feel like i'm doing a bit more than just watching a cut scene. I personally love the formula, Personally I don't need their to be some sort of major revolution to justify me getting a game if it works it works. I just wanted a new spidey story to play and the mechanics in the first one were so good I didn't mind the gameplay being very similar. The riddler stuff maybe something like that would be cool but then there would just be more people saying this is a arkham clone. I think games like Tears of The Kingdom show you don't need a major revolution (Sure they added the zonai stuff but that was about it) in my opinion it was basically just a clone of breath of the wild and still got critical acclaim. Barring a few story choices here and there I really loved the game and if Spiderman 3 were to come out and was basically the same loop with a couple of new things added I honestly wouldn't mind. Also there were a couple bugs that irked me even some small stuff like Miles's apartment having a Cuban flag instead of a Puerto Rican flag (Small thing but as a Puerto Rican it triggered me 😂).
If this game has pacing issues, i guess i dont fully understand how pacing works in games. For me this games sequence of events just soared. Even the "slow" sections with mj or real peter and miles were expedient and didnt drag.
I fibd it hard to imagine how this game would look if it was "better paced" it almost seems like it would be exhausting.
One thing that shocked me was how brutal the game was towards the middle of the game. I think that Venom should have had a bit more screen time and developing him a bit more but I really liked what they did. Kraven was a great villain and I was surprised with how much I enjoyed him when he was on screen. If they added a few more hours if main story I think it would have benefited them. Overall, the story was great and I like it more than the first game. Would have liked a bit more side missions though, I feel like there wasn’t enough. Got the plat in about 24 hours and it was a lot more fun than the other two games. Has me really excited to see what Insomniac does with Wolverine.
Wolverines gonna be amazing. Side missions are a fair amount, I wish we could replay bases/missions so we can try the fights with different gadgets and suits ! Each mission though, side or main, is so well crafted. Also I love the crimes not being check listed

I honestly wanna see more of sandman, I feel like they wasted him by making him the opening boss. I don't know if we'll see more of him or if we'll get to fight him again since we basically helped him out with his family hence the marko memories. We fight him in the prologue and we never see him again. They could've saved him for SM3

Overall loved the game, gotta give it a bit of time to avoid recency bias but I think it is my game of the year. Do have two issues though. Main one is that I encountered more bugs than the previous two games - worst one was where Peter's head disappeared in a fairly pivotal scene and it took away from the emotion it was going for. Second, is that once you 100% the game the city does feel a bit dead - I think a really good addition would be to add an Arkham style arena mode for Peter, Miles & another character I'm sure others who have finished the game will know about.
The only thing I miss was some of the gadgets in the first game, specifically the tripwire, I miss tagging someone with it and it drags a buddy and they smack into each other and stick to a wall. While they do have a similar type gadget, it just doesn't feel the same. However I have come to enjoy the ones we do get

100% agree with those early criticisms. Pacing just all over the place. On a gameplay and mechanical level totally better than the first. But the orginals story was just perfect
I deffo have similar opinions to you, I think the gameplay is great, boss fights are better, but Spider-Man 1 just felt more special to me, it was trying to give Spider-Man fans the game they'd been wanting for years, especially after a massive disrespect with TASM 2. I felt this game was just "let's make everything bigger" (ironically though, the platinum is not even a hassle at all). I worry for the next one cos they're going to try to make it so big which may sacrifice other elements I appreciate of smaller games. My best way I can describe it is Spider-Man 1 is like a song that has really good lyrics and melody and the instrumentation behind it doesn't try to get in the way, the rest of the band respects the singer's moment to shine. In Spider-Man 2, I felt all the band members were trying to shine and getting in the way of each other, trying to showcase their talents.
This game is an absolute masterpiece. Best story so far

they kinda seemed to nerf peter to put over miles becoming the new Spider-Man. There’s nothing wrong with miles taking over eventually. I mean where else can this story lead to? But they didn’t have to make Pete seem lesser in comparison to do that. For example,
Pete got his ass clapped in the sandman fight. First, almost getting drowned in sand only to be saved by miles. That one was ight. Okay. Sandman is strong BUT SECOND, he was getting struck by lightning TWICE then getting saved by miles afterwards BOTH times. Which makes no sense. Pete has fought electro… who’s whole gimmick is electricity… which Peter is able to dodge. And has beat him… many times… and in a 2v1 against him and vulture at that in the first game. On top of that. There’s a whole mission in the first one where you spend the whole time dodging lightning… how is Pete not dodging this lightning??? It reminds me of how you face scorpion and rhino in a 2v1 in the first one and WIN! But then at the beginning of miles morales, when Pete AND Miles are 2v1-ing rhino, Pete literally gets tossed and knocked out… what???
Finally!! I thought I was the only one who liked the MJ missions since the first one. People are so boring complaining about useless shit. In this one is so much more fun playing with her, it’s kinda of a shooter. And in the final mission it makes feel scared from the simbiotes, one gave me a hell of a jump scare. It’s different when they run to get you when you’re Spider-Man and when your just a normal person, great job from the devs.
Kraven story was super cool, they adapted the Kraven’s Last Hunt so good. He really did a impact on this game.
Venom, I’m speechless until now, I wish he had more screen time too, but the quality, the feeling really pays it off.
They only missed out not doing an interaction with Pete and Black Cat when he gets the black suit. I was craving for that moment and I can’t believe there isn’t one. Miles with her was super dope, but… she should’ve made part of the campaign.
Besides that it’s a perfect game, I’m still recovering from this journey (but already on second playthrough)

This is the first game to finally top the web swinging from Spider-Man 2 on the PS2. The first game came close but ultimately fell short of topping the swinging. This game has some of the most fun and fast traversal in a video game and feels amazing. I definitely feel like the first game has a better story, villain, pacing and I still can't get over the Peter face change. I like how this game deals with the redemption of the previous villains from the first game. I like how we are saving these people that deserve a second chance. I also got a ton of bugs in this game. Multiple times being stuck as a cube and being stuck in menus that won't let me leave them unless I reload a checkpoint. Luckily the game loads in seconds so it's not the biggest deal but noteworthy for sure.

I agree with most of your points. Aside from ether story which I thought was stellar. Like the whole relationship side of each character seeing how they all reacted to the out come. SPOILER just in case. Scream being added man I wanted more symbiotes. Also so many nods to the hierarchy of the symbiotes. That’s where I feel we needed more. Like why not give Ganky a symbiote like that would have been awesome
Towards the end when you mentiond the wing gliding, that really made me laugh cause when Dragonflight came out for WoW, they did the whole Superman 64 thing as well, like "Is this fun?" For a 6 year old maybe lol

Great review, I just finished the story myself and have 73% overall completion of the content. I feel I definitely enjoyed more aspects of the game than you, based on your critiques, but I could understand almost all your points (except the web wings, those things are awesome when combining them web swinging). I also agree that the 1st Insomniac SM game has a stronger story than this game, but I was really into the story the whole way through regardless.
Also off-topic note, but I feel like a “Final Verdict” video for this game on the MrMattyPlays channel would’ve done really well, given your affinity for Spider-Man. I know you gave your reason why it’s here in the video, just throwing my 2 cents out there

While I loved the story I admit that I thought Kraven would become Venom as it would have been a more fulfilling arc for "The Ultimate Hunter" who is trying to find his equal before dying to become that Ultimate Hunter in Venom making him and Venom a much more massive threat
I feel like Harry's turn to the Dark Side felt off and wasn't as convinincing as it should have been
I did notice three diffrent quest lines that were obvious setups for DLC stories and I am eager for when that happens

This is the only game I played this year that I immediately wanted to replay. Wings are an extension of your movement. It reminds me a lot of Super Mario Odyssey. Mario could operate on a very simple level but for those who master the movement. Could pull off some incredible scene. NY is breathtaking. Morning noon and night. It feels a bit short but I'm sure they will do DLC.
Idk if any of y’all noticed the sounds that the symbiote monsters were making. They sounded very similar to the symbiote monster sounds from the Spiderman PS1 / N64 game.

Blown away by this game, they give fan service but show restraint with that which is why it works so well. It's just so fun, even for side missions that are less interesting you never really care because you're still Spider-man doing spider-man things. I can understand frustrations of the shorter length but personally I'm a fan, I think what hurts that more is no New game plus at launch. Not the best game I've played this year but definitely my favourite

1. Yes what they did with the Spanish dub of this game was some of the stupidest and most hypocritical shit I’ve seen in a while. Imagine a bunch of Americans (who hate when others do this) telling a whole continent their language isn’t inclusive enough so they take it upon themselves to completely make words up to “fix” that.
And 2. I 100000000% without a doubt agree with the fact that they kicked down Pete to put over miles. I said on another comment that there’s nothing wrong with miles taking over eventually in this storyline but they didn’t have to make Pete look like a jackass for it. Pete was Spider-Man for 8 YEARS before miles was. He should know this shit already… maybe have miles help him a couple times throughout the story to solidify their brotherly bond and emphasize that they depend heavily on each other especially with this new, powerful threat but they made Pete get his ass saved by miles so many times but hardly ever had the roles reversed. I mean just in the sandman fight alone, Pete got saved by miles 3 TIMES. Once when he got pulled out the sand by miles then twice when he gets struck by lightning… the second one of which makes no sense because we’ve seen this Spider-Man dodge both regular lightning as well as dodge electro’s attacks and defeat him… many times… and in a 1v2 against him and vulture at that! When Pete (who’s 25 years old and has 10 YEARS experience as Spider-Man) got into trouble, he would get saved. If miles (who has like a year or 2 of experience as Spider-Man, as well as apparently SM2 only takes place a few months after Miles’s game) did, he would overpower the foe or issue and come out on top by himself for the most part. And this is coming from someone who loves miles! I like the kid! AND, I mean come on… his powers are badass and I can’t wait to see what they do with him once he has the same level of experience as Pete did in this game. But the way they did it here? Amazing story, amazing characters, amazing world and gameplay but dragging Pete down was not the move
I have no issue with diversity. I just hate the dumb shit Pete would fall victim to. But as for the scream fight. I understand why he acted that way. He was already fucked from losing his best friend to this monster so he was desperate and saying anything to get mj to “snap out of it” as well as the fact that he did feel horrible for mj. I mean it’s completely in Pete’s character to fully blame himself if someone he loves falls victim to something. It’s just how he is
One thing I’d like to see with the next game are better side missions. They could flesh out the world and characters so nicely with good ones, but Spider-Man 2’s were mostly checklist stuff, random side stories, and one decent Yuri storyline. Having multiple Yuri level side quests should be what they shoot for next time.
Your memory of the first game is definitely a little off. Both games have QTEs but have the option to turn them off. And puzzles were also skippable in the first game.
My only complaint about the web-wigs are the wind tunnels. Specifically the rings that you have to go through. The developers should have kept the wind effects without including those corny rings which distract from the immaculate beauty of the city.

Out of all the complaints ive seen folk reach for when talking about this game, this one is the most valid. Like i didnt mind, but i was confused why they did it. I can literally see the wind effects they put their to show its a wind tunnel, i didnt need the big circles to show me where to use my wings at. Also didnt really need wind tunnels imo, ince you unlock tge swing loop that lets you get a huge boost if speed i almost never counted on the wind tunnels, just did a loop and ipened them up after i went flying out of it.
To me the wind tunnels operated as a pseudo, fast travel system. Towards the back end of the campaign, I wanted to finish the game as quickly as possible and the wind tunnels were a nice way to get to the next objective quickly.

Not every game needs a parry mechanic, and this game is the showcase for a game that definitely does not need it. Spider-Man combat is incredibly fast and fluid, slowing down for even a split second in combat to time a perfect parry, is direct opposition to the flow of combat. The good thing is it's not forced, which I'm grateful for, you never have to parry anything, so I just stay in normal Spidey combat mode.
I have to agree with Matty on this one. I really enjoyed my 100% playthrough of the game but I have some problems with the story in general. It took too long to get to the black suit and venom. Don't like when villains are killed off screen and Miles didn't really feel that involved in main story. The ending of the game doesn't really get me excited for Spiderman 3. Which is unfortunate but hopefully they nail it in the third game. Apart from that I encountered so many bugs, glitches and game crashes. Thankfully no corrupted saves but ruined the momentum.

Okay… so… I have just finished Spider-Man 2 last night. And I have some thoughts as well. So, this is my non-spoiler thoughts about this game.
TL;DnR:
This is not only the best Spider-Man game I have ever played. But it is also the BEST Superhero game I have ever played in my LIFE!
My personal “score” is $150/$80.

A few things to note first:
1) My Top 5 superheroes are Black Panther (T’Challa), Spider-Man (Miles), Spider-Man (Peter), Static, and Black Panther (Shuri). So when a superhero game has two of my top five in it, I am *GOING to be* biased in its favor. I’m also going to be biased unapologetically, too. So… yeah. This is definitely not an attempt at an unbiased or minimally biased think piece.
2) Yes. I did platinum it.
3) Yes. I did take my sweet precious time playing the game. I did not rush through anything. Case in point: I reached max level at around the 60% mark of the game. (36 hours is my playtime.)

Alright… so, since this isn’t an actual “review,” I won’t be going over much of the story or the gameplay mechanics for, obviously, spoiler reasons. So this isn’t a breakdown of the game from my perspective by any means. Just an overall perspective.
The game is wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. While not in every way imaginable, it is wonderful in ways I had never imagined it would be.
So I went into this game damn-near completely blind. Aside from the initial trailer, I had not seen any footage of the game. (As you’ve figured, that was intentional.)
Story:
I describe myself as a story-driven Gamer. Means just what it sounds like. As such, the story is always the most important aspect of a game for me. And this story here?! Blew! Me! Away!!! The only expectation I had was for it to be as good as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, just longer. Which would have been perfect for me, as that is all I wanted. But I got so much more than that. Insomniac pulled story beats that I absolutely did not see coming. Every time I thought to myself “Okay… that was WILD! It can’t get any better than this!! Now I’m going to just ride this high for the rest of the game because all they can do now is put the game in cruise control from this point on.” Every time I had a thought like that, they rose the bar and basically told me: “Oh… you thought that THAT was the best that we could do? How insulting. Let me show you that the dial goes much, much further past 11.” To me, it was like Insomniac heard a few particular comments (won’t say what those are now, but during a spoiler thread I can share) like they heard the comments and went “Aight, bet. I’ll take your _______, and I’m going to raise you this right here.” And they fucking DID IT! I swear, the story is the absolute BEST. And it is the best thing about this game. Which, for a story-driven Gamer such as myself, is absolutely perfect.
Gameplay:
Gameplay was built on upon off of what Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales built. They took the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just improve on it.” approach and it served the game masterfully. Despite requiring us to earn moves we had already earned in previous games already, they managed to make the entire process be refreshed and, well… improved! The challenge in combat rose at an incredible pace. And later enemies really made me utilize the parry mechanic I had been ignoring up to that point for no other reason than I just didn’t feel like using it and didn’t have a need to do so… until I did.
Webwings were so gotdamn dope! My goodness, that was such an epic addition to the game! Made traversal so much more versatile, quick and fast, and flashy. Just what I look for in Spider-Man games!
Other:
Voice acting, script, all of that? Top notch. Not surprising, but very, very pleasing.
Performance:
I played the game at 40fps, so performance was 100% solid for me. (I always choose 40fps when I have the option to. 30fps when I don’t. Except on PC. I go for fidelity and just let the fraereate do whatever it wants since I can't tell the difference anyway.)
But there were some glitches, bugs, and crashes. A noticeable amount. Those don’t bother me, so it is no big deal to me in general. Add the speed in which I was able to restart from last checkpoint or, for crashes, the speed I was able to get back into the game - add those to the equation and it bothers me even less. Not an issue for me, but I know that this is a sticking point for a lot of people, so I had to mention it so now one thinks I am ignoring it. (Although, technically I did.) 🤷🏾♂️
Score: $150/$80
What does that mean?
I do my scores different from most other people. Instead of the star scale, 5 point scale, 10 point scale, or 100 point scale, I use a money scale. The second number is the dollar amount that I paid for the game. The first number is the dollar amount I think the gaming experience is worth to me **within the context** of scoring a game. (Not actually paying that much for said game.) The point is to accurately express how much fun I had playing this game. So, for this game, it is essentially saying that I got $150.00 worth of fun out of this $80.00 game.
(And by the way, a $150.00 is the highest “score” I have ever given a game. So Spider-Man 2 joins the ranks of Assassin’s Creed Origins and The Witcher 3 for me.)

Edit: also i had 4 bugs through out my playtime over 4 saves that forced me to shut the game down and restart. I think it full on crashed on me like 10 times on random parts to.
This game blew me away. Everything I wanted and then some. The infinite ways you can incorporate the traversal into the combat makes it infinitely repayable for me. I play devil may cry at a high level so I'm drawn to games with BUTTONS

I LOVED the story of this game, it was so epic and really felt like the quality and feel of a mainline marvel movie. They nailed that.
I had no problem with the science mini games, I actually enjoyed them and they didn’t come up too often to where it was annoying. I appreciated that the devs gave so many varied styles of gaming.
My only issue was the games runtime. I wanted more. Especially when there’s no new game+ and you can 100% it within 25 hours (and I wasn’t even trying to do it quickly.)
I also wasn’t a huge fan of Yuri’s storyline because it felt totally out of left field, having forgotten what happened with her in the first game as it’s a 5 year old side plot told only thru audio clips 😂…
I wish they tied up the carnage plot too but I guess that’s DLC bait along with Silk who -no shade but- I hope they don’t make her look busted, most of the women in this game look weirdly unattractive while Peter and Miles are like catalogue models. MJ in particular has weirdly light eyelashes and a lot of red around her eyes which makes her look super tired and weird.
i agree with the women thing, i think mj looks good but i think her eyes are too big or something? it’s weird, also yuri fr does not look like she’s in tip top shape to be wraith, i can buy felicia being as flexiable and athletic as she is she’s decently fit, yuri is like pushin 30 or 40 doing flips on par with spider-man. i feel like felecia, rio and mj and in good lighting are fine

I'm glad I'm not the only one who suffered from camera stuffing. I also agree about the parry and chaotic nature of combat it can be a bit inundated. Still, having a blast playing it.

Some of the complaints you had I 100% disagree with. Like web wings I found where an amazing addition to moving around the larger map. Going up to a tall building and gliding off felt great to me.
Nah bro the swinging is so good but the web wings feel like the devs tryna convince you to stop swinging, I think they should changed the web wings a bit by making wind tunnels located in far less places so u don't feel so forced to use them over the reason you're playing a spiderman game

Don't Buy This Game people, so many issues in it:
- Spanish language completely butchered for "inclusion"
- ESG company blackrock has 7% of sony stocks and it shows its influence
- performative pandering that they can't even get right
- like the flag in Mile's room or taiyaki stand that can't even figure out Taiyaki isn't a pretzel
- Mary Jowl face and androgynous body type cause femininity is seen as bad these days
- Peter Parker emasculated constantly to push up Miles and Mary Jowl
- Miles literally has no reason to exist
- All they do with miles is remove Peter's agency in his own story, - Peter gets beat up then Miles saves him to show he's "important" when really its just devaluing Peter's ability to make miles look better
- MJ stealth sections ridiculously overpowered to make her sections seem good when really its laughable
- Black cat doesn't get missions, neither does wraith as playable but time for terrible MJ sections
- Black cat retcon to bi and having a gf so the entire time she's manipulating Peter and causing stress in his home life for no good reason, also devaluing her care to her supposed GF they made up just now, legitimately makes her a terrible character now
- Kraven and venom wasted to push more time to ESG and social politics
- Mile's side missions are mediocre from helping someone ask someone out for prom to graffiti art, one is with two gay guys and the other with a deaf girl cause "inclusion over storytelling" and its so telling
- fight club girl beating up a guy twice her size while he begs, just misandry in a nutshell
- museum mission only there to say the funding gets taken away by EVIL WHITE GUY BUSINESS OWNER cause that's all they always do white = bad always to these writers
and of course Scream fight of Peter being emasculated, insulted, while he begs for forgiveness from his "queen" (second sony game to emphasize that idea, other was GoW Ragnarok Freya speech) and she saves HERSELF cause she's a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER

Agree. Rather than just straight up flying with web wings, I wish they made them in a way that they were actual gliders and descend slowly over time. I get it, you can choose to not use them but you see my point.

I haven’t played it yet but hearing the criticisms from some of them make the game sound worse than it actually is. I’m also not a fan of this whole “more of the same” bs. It’s a spider-man game what did you expect? It didn’t need to be completely changed, just tweaked a bit which they clearly did by the looks of it. If the game changes too much people will complain. If it changes too little people will also complain it’s ridiculous.
It's so fun on performance mode. The fidelity mode literally feels like it's in slow motion. I'm so impressed with their ability to utilize the abilities of the PS5's capabilities. It's just so impressive on a game design, gameplay mechanics, world building level. I can't wait to see how they do The Wolverine game!!!

I beat the game on hard mode in about 20 hours, and i loved the parry. It becomes essential to be able to do consecutively.

Just so anyone knows you can actually turn off the tutorial in the settings. I was really annoyed about the game constantly telling me what to do, like telling me to heal all the time, but late in the game realised you can just turn it off 😬
I got that Miles bug at the end wen his body disappeared aswell, just had to restart checkpoint then it got fixed
A straight up evolution in superhero video games... in single player games... period. I personally am talking my time with it, im in no rush to finish the story, its that good.

"The lack of suprise" is crazy to me beacuse there were SOOO many moments that I never saw coming or thought they would include

For example Harry getting to be Agent Venom for a bit, the entire 3rd act I knew we were getting Venom obviously but I was completely blown back when we got a symbiote invasion straight out of Web of Shadows and then a SCREAM boss fight are you kidding me and then to Top ot off Peter gets the ANTI VENOM suit witch I never saw coming
Considering only Eddie has ever had the anti venom suit in the comics
And then the gave Venom his wings from "King in Black" witch is a crazy reference. I can safely say I was suprised playing this way more than either the original game or miles
For me its 10/10 the story was fantastic, the gameplay was badass! I felt like Venom and Spider-Man! I can’t wait for Spider-Man 3!
Gameplay and traversal improved, sure. But the story is a dissapointment. Some dialogue choices and pacing make the narrative predictable, corny, or cringe. Storywise the original PS4 was better. And the faces were 10 times in the original too.
One thing I wish the video touched on a little more is the vast improvement in the quality of the boss battles. With the new parry mechanic the battles have more depth and require a little more strategy. It’s certainly not at the level of a from software game but it’s leagues above most other superhero titles.

These games are garbage. I 100% completed the first game to give it a chance because Spider-Man is my favorite superhero. These games are WAY too focused on their mediocre stories. It hampers the game design. There's no interesting enemy types, level design or game mechanics. It's the biggest disappointment of all time.

I'm 12 hours in, 38% through the story and I'm shock at how much I'm not liking this game. I was enjoying SM 2018 and SM Miles a hell of a lot more then this game at this point in the game. A lot of the story beats feel rushed and unearned and the side content is bland and filled to the brim with the most cringe dialogue, jokes, and banter I've ever heard in any medium.
Also this is one of the best-worst looking games ever. The graphical fidelity is very inconsistent. The lighting and Ray tracing carry the visuals but when you take a closer look alot of the environmental and NPCS are low poly and don't look good at all. In the last two games the in-game cutscenes were were CGI. But in SM2 they use the
in-game character models and environments which is why you get bugs were characters are invisible or just a floating head.
So far my positives are the lighting and traversal. I really hope the story picks up and becomes and interesting
