- The mk7.5 Volkswagen Golf R is no doubt an incredibly fast, relatively cheap hot hatchback which turns heads of car people all over the place... but is it worth hyper hatch status? And should you buy one? In this video I'll give you my honest review of this popular VW!
Thanks again to Motorland in Beckenham for letting me take the Golf R out for a drive! Check them out here: www.motorlandltd.com/ or on Instagram/CZcams @motorlandltd

I’m 39, got plenty of cars that are fast. But will be buying a golf R soon as it does everything you want
A Golf R with a good stage 1 remap. Must be one of the best bang for buck cars ever.
You need another subcategory: Superhatch.
Agreed - it would probably sit more in that space
@@CarsWithJB Ive seen many people refer to a superhatch as more of a jacked up hatch (think mini SUV) like a GLA45
Who's calling a Golf R a hyper hatch? It's a Golf, the whole purpose of a "hot" Golf is to be a decent daily driver, and a nice A road blaster. They're supposed to be an all rounder, which will make them by their nature a bit more sedate than something like an A45 or an RS3, which are purpose built to be weapons.
@@philip244 huh?
@philipt12345 I can read English, I just have no idea what the point of your reply was or what you're on about exactly. How is it relevant in any way to what I said?
Post some random Golf R related things followed by "off you go", which adds absolutely nothing by the way, and then wonder why I'm confused.
I don't think your problem is related to language, I think you're just a bit simple.
I had a mk7 manual, went stage 2. It was very quick. Kept it for 4 years. I then test drove, FK8 type R, A45 AMG 2018, M2 DCT, Mountune Focus RS. The civic’s seating pos and seats are nice, but you can’t get the power down & the info system is pants. The AMG felt slow. M2… Felt special, but wasn’t fast enough, would’ve needed modifying to catch a stage 2 R, Focus RS..😂. FUN!! Crazy car. Just wasn’t as quick as the R.. But, nice cars. Ended up getting another Golf R. Fully loaded 7.5 DSG. They really are one of the BEST Allrounders. Dream Garage. RSQ3 for daily and Exige 390 FE or Boxster Spyder.
Had a stage 1 Golf R 7.5. 370hp....the acceleration must have been easily sub 4 sec 0-60. Felt seriously rapid, especially in Sport. It's a nice car, and I did earlier this year think of getting another as a daily. But like JB mentioned the insurance for some cars has become ridiculous based on my current address. It was £700 3 yrs ago, now it's over £2k. I mean I'm nearly 40!
I'm looking to buy one within the next couple of weeks I'm getting insurance quotes in the range of £700-£900. I'm 23, I'm surprised your quotes are so high
@@ctv4646 3 points on license and my main abode is inside the m25. But funnily enough I did get similar quotes to you when I used a family members address in the Midlands. Also was insured on a 997 turbo the past year for 900 and am now insured on a tvr 5.0 v8 for 700. Their algorithms are odd.
@@niall3973I have 11 points and it’s 1.2k for me
@@philip244 I need to move to where you people live, i had a leon cupra and my insurance was 1400 quid, with 20 years no claims and 0 points, my formentor (VZ2) this year cost me 1900 quid... fucking rip off merchants
@@antop4597 I don’t live in London ,north west , west yorks or Birmingham
Like the new format, please don’t stop the lists though!! Really think you would benefit from a video stabilisation arm for your phone/camera when walking round the cars as the shot was very wobbly and seemed below your normal production value. Not a dig just some constructive feedback.
Will probs swap my main camera for the GoPro until I can be properly bothered to set up my stabiliser, it annoys me every time I get it out because of the amount of grief it gives me!
The way you said better suspension as you went over a speedbump was priceless
I've owned my golf R for nearly 6 years now. I test dove a golf mk 7.5 gti the same day and the difference in performance was massive, so i got the R. It's not quite a hyper hatch by today's standards but it's still rapid and will destroy a B road once you get used to the haldex.
I think the tuning capability and amount of aftermarket part options make the car a popular choice for many.
Intercooler and an intake got mine (S3 8V) to over 390 BHP at R-Tech, will do a 3.8 0-100 kmh now :)
Lots of available aftermarket splitter kits and wheel options available too to jazz it up a bit, the stock car kind of feels like a clean slate to build upon.
As a mk7.5 R owner, it’s certainly not a Hyper Hatch although still very capable.
Liking the new format 👌
For traffic light grand prix and "certi" drivers with elbow deletes they are good but I think i'd rather get a GTI Performance less chavvy and slightly more fun especially after a tune to 300bhp. However VAG cars are numb to drive if looking at other brands I would look at 30n, Type R and focus STs for more driver engagement.
Traffic light grand prix 😂😂😂😂 haven't laughed at a comment like I did in a while
The elbow delete got me - will be sharing with friends!
It's a hot hatchback without going over the top. You can get a golf R if you want a bit more speed. It's probably up there with the most sold hot hatchbacks over the last 40 years.
I wouldn't say the golf r is a hyper-hatch, RS3s m140is and A45s are but the likes s3, golf r, cupras make a middle zone somewhere between hot and hyper haha.
It's interesting though that the M140i was and still is cheaper than the same condition MK7.5 Golf R, yet is a more special car.
One of the best all round cars you can buy for the money. I had one close to 500hp it was epic, they can be abit dull when stock and they need abit of work to sound half decent but as an all rounder they are great
Boring too drive but can’t argue that as an all rounder it’s hard too beat👏🏽
What would you buy if you had around 25k to spend. Been looking at bmw 135i or a35?
I'm a massive VW fanboy but that RS4 in the background........ stunning things
I’m sure it’s fast as hell, but is it fun? I’ve done super fast stuff, now it’s MX5 simpleness, if that’s a word 👍
My standard evo 6 (278 bhp ) with old skool lag recently left a golf R for dead on country roads. I was very surprised as all R’s I have been in seem to be way faster than they should be
Would you class the Clio V6 as one of the first hyperhatches with the 182 & 172 being in the hot hatch category???
Great shout - hadn't ever even considered them this way! To the same end, the Turbo and Turbo 2 vs the Alpine Turbo/GT Turbo that followed, probably another shout, and same with the 205 T16 vs the 205 GTI!
I feel like this video has to do well- this car is surely at the perfect intersection of the interests of all viewers of this channel, which is also why it's so popular. I'm not excited about the car, but I am excited about the JB review!
Hyper hatch? Pretty sure my unmodified* 1.6L Pug has better power/weight and is quicker round a track. On the other hand, the Golf is probably quicker round a track for 95% of drivers, is *much* faster 0-30 and possibly quicker in a straight line even in gear, not sure. Most of that applies to most other cars in comparison too. On a road, a Golf R, especially chipped, is at least as quick as almost anything for most people. Interior material quality is also lovely, it's just a really good car though. In most situations, this Golf is as quick as my old porker...but I'll pass on the VW 😄
Here's the thing though: if you say "I drive a Golf R" the reaction from anyone who isn't a hardcode VW fan is "OK" - a hyper hatch needs to get "ooh nice" not "meh". Nobody will say it's a mistake though. Great car, not hyper, also not that interesting at all to be honest, but very good.
*turns out my car has a decat, which explains the noise! I could have found that out earlier (e.g. by having a quick look), but being louder wasn't something I felt the need to fix! MOT booked next month, will see how that goes...
Looking at the stats of these i think they are hyperhatch especially 0 to 60mph. If i was to get one myself id try and see if it wasn't leased in its life as id worry it had a early life being ragged around and a lot of these were leased with low specs to save on the borrowers monthly payments
If i was looking at a fast hatchback its either the RS3 or A45 AMG. More because they are more powerful and in the right spec and parts stand out compared to their normal models
I was confused once I heard your voice and saw your channel name, I thought you were either BlackPanthaa or Officially Gassed OG, you are like a hybrid between the 2 and you are all car related channels!
i own a mk7.5 R and after owning it for a year id say standard no it would stay in hot hatch territory, but with a stage 2 tune big brake kit and some more mods then yes its hyperhatch. they can handle 500bhp easily on the standard engine.
A video in this budget and category
I personally wouldn't class it as a hyper hatch but it certainly has the potential to become one with some simple upgrades and tuning. The Civic Type R has similar power but is more hyper, atleast in looks and feel.
Yeah I’d say the 3 most recent Type Rs definitely knock on the hyper hatch door - particularly on track!
Hey I’m looking for a new car and I’m stuck between st line x edition and a swift sport
The issue with the golf r is the rs3. That is vag's top of the range hatchback so the golf doesnt get the same love
Exactly. I feel like there's a lot of missed opportunity with the golf R. It shouldn't have gone up against the rs3 but the fact it uses the same 2.0 ea888 as the GTi it's not that much more special than the GTi. They should have used the VR6 3.6 as an upgrade to the 3.2 in the R32 as they were still using that engine at the time but they didn't and that makes it boring
@@Afraz_9n3 that 3.2 boosted would be lovely in the r chassis imo.
Its a weird 1 tbf. Vag have a few cars in that price range with identical performance. Cupra, seat, skoda, vw and audi.
It was golf gti that started it up nearly 47 years ago. With the Ford's of the day. Today these cars are faster than a Cosworth from 86.
Would have got the Golf R but the dreaded water pump plagued my old Seat. Got a GT86 instead
Seems mad to me that VW haven't sorted out their water pump issues yet. They must have a cause and resolution nailed down by now. All the engineering they put in to their products and they can't make a water pump last? Some on the 1.4 TSIs were failing at as low as 30,000 miles.
Where does Hyper hatch horse power start from 300,350,400? Mines a hot hatch with 200bhp
A car to avoid. 90% of them have been revved up and down the back streets of Bradford for the popsnbangs bruv innit tho
Good job there's service history and low mileage car's and one owner cars out there. We are living in the UK. Not all of us come for Bradford. Or live near Bradford. I'm sure there's plenty of people in Bradford that look after there Car's. : )
There is a world out side of Bradford with plenty of nice R’s out there , just that 90% of stolen golf R’s end up in Bradford !
If there's one car that's never turned my head it's a Golf. No idea why, I just find them "meh".
Brilliant bit of kit but far too common and I think golfs are a bit boring to look at.
Agree with the common piece, you’re not hard pressed to find one out on the roads for sure
Stock - Best Hot Hatch
Stage 1 - 100% Hyper Hatch
Hot hatch plus
The only VW Golf which could be considered a hyper hatch is the very limited Mk7 Clubsport S.
I beleave all cars are same power just a different sound non of the hot hatches really feel more faster than the ones that have higher power
How does a mk3 tts stand up to it?
Funny you should ask - I actually cut out a part talking about this vs the mk3 TTS which I drove a few years back, the Audi has a bit more of an aggressive driving position and a slightly nicer interior imo but all in it’s quite a similar driving experience
I've missed that review. Yes its what i thought. I think that'd what I'd buy. Thanks mate.
@@budwise7332 no worries it wasn’t a review I drove it for pleasure! Enjoy 🤙🏽
So it’s a super hatch?
The golf gti mk7.5 looks more sporty than the R
Excuse me? Were you finding a 7.5 for £15k? “”Lol
Its not a hyper hatch...thats a45 s and the rs3
Unfortunately its a car with a huge image problem. I dont think Ive ever yet seen one which isnt driven like a total idiot by youths in baseball caps or wrecked. They to me scream chav.
Youth is 16 to 24....nice car....
Hot not Hyper
…. Get an V10 M5 ….. ? There is a reason why they are cheap.
F10*!
Mmm. So there is a cheap bargain car for an old fart like myself. 😂
Hands completely off the stering when too many times 🤬 such a shame because otherwise a great engager
