Such a astunning plant you have there. Love watching your videos. i bought an orbiflora last summer I read that it was a difficult plant to grow but it did well over winter which encouraged me to buy other prayer plants and then other houseplants. A year on and over a hundred plants later the orbiflora still looks stunnings and continues to be my pride and joy.

I found my Orbifolia LOVES light. It has 2 grow lights over it and even gets a bit of winter afternoon direct sun and no burns yet. For me i find the type of water is no.1 in keeping it happy. I can only give mine rainwater or it has a hissy fit.
I just added this little guy to my collection about a month ago. When purchased it had a large brand new leave just starting to unfurl. Now a month later it’s barely opened any more. My plant isn’t showing any other signs of stress. Are they just slow movers or is this a sign of climate change shock? LOVE this beauty!!

That’s the norm, sadly. A lot of these channels buy big glasshouse grown ones just for the show !!
I love Calatheas had 4, now down to 3 they were all about to die so last ditch effort they are currently living on the edge of a heat mat right under a grow light next to a humidifier and suddenly they are all thriving with new leaves the crispy edges are a thing of the past so that’s where they are staying till they no longer fit lol. Thanks for the video Claire might just dig out a basement and put them down there 😂

I love your plant. It’s beautiful! I have Calathea Rosy and Maranta and they are growing better now in October than they were in the summer.
Ahh some genuine truth at last !! I’m retired after 50 years in horticulture and have a collection of 19 ‘Prayer Plants’, and have only just felt I could take on an orbifolia! People on CZcams plant channels tell lies and/or brag about their ‘successes’ with ‘difficult’ plants. Take everything you hear, especially from novices, with a huge handful of salt and/or seek out a professional at a nursery for trustworthy advice! ✌️

I like the decoration sleeve around your pot. Do you make those or is it something you bought? Regarding sitting the tap water for hours, only water and gases (like chlorine) will evaporate and no other chemicals and definitely no minerals will ever leave the water. And depending on the area you live, they will put either chlorine or chloramine into your local water. The latter does not evaporate. So, check with the local water department and find out which one. Most common cause for ruining the leaves on Calathea will be direct sun and repeated irregular watering (leaving the pot bone dry and forget about it or letting in sit in water and forget about it).
Just found your channel while searching for tips on Calathea Orbifolia. My house is quite bright but it seems ok but slightly on the droopy side so i think I've been a bit stingy on the watering. No browning, and it's putting out healthy new leaves. Thank you for all the info
thanks for the info 🤩 I have a calathea zebrina that's loving life, so I thought I was ready to try the orbifolia as she's just as pretty 😍 but she's not so happy 🤔 now realise it's probably due to too much light 🙏😘

I first saw a Calathea in a posh plant shop. Gorgeous, BUT I had just purchased my third plant. I have a Palor Palm, Peperomia Hope and a seedling from Trader Joe’s that may be a Monstera. All were purchased this year in late January/ early February of this year. I don’t know if I am ready to take on a posh plant😅. But, I saw a sad Calathea in Target today: brown leaves, droopy and under $20.00. IF a manager were willing to drop the price AND, I could find one with no pest pressures…MAYBE.

I live in Southern California where it is dryer and will be misting it. How often should I be misting it in addition to its normal watering schedule? Mixed consensus online...
Help! I have a one of these plants and I'm trying everything to salvage it. The leaves keep turning brown at the edges until it fully dies. I have two new growth leaves that didn't get too large and they've already begun to decline. I believe another is sprouting but I don't want it to face the same fate. It was repotted from the store planter into a larger plastic put with drainage... additional soil. I don't have it in direct light... I've tried fungicide. I don't know what else to do! Help!

Data shows pebble trays and misting don’t work. Grouping does. Water minerals used today Don’t evaporate. Run water thru your plant to flush mineral salts. I have well water, but see that rain water works better for plants. Use aroid soil.
Is the bathroom a good room because of the humidity?
Wait- What do I do? I'd like this plant, but all of my plants go in my bedroom which is a shallow, west facing room in the third story. Most of the room gets direct light, and what bit don't get direct get bright indirect light. Do you think I could get away with it if I give it a bit more attention?
Just for a refference: I do have quite a few indirect light plants on that windowcil. My curly spider was on the windowcil for most of it's life (I had it since february) it's too large to fit on there now and still a lush green. I also have a Tradescantia Nanouk, A Maidens hair fern,a peace lily and a Watermelon peperomia on that same windowcil, so I am more acclimated to growing plants in intense bright light, but if your calathea grows so well in such a (assumedly) dark area, it does make me a little nervous what would happen to one in my bedroom.
I waited over 50 years until I was certain I could give an orbifolia what it needed to flourish!!
So I suppose it would do well in a bathroom with a semi transparent window?

I've been reading a bit about the effectivness of leaving tap water out overnight to evaporate the chlorine. It seems that whilst doing this does indeed work for dissipating the chlorine, it doesn't work for other elements such as chloramine, fluoride, heavy metals, ammonia etc. I think I'll just stick to rain water, its free, clean and I'm fortunate to be able to collect it with ease.

70-80% humidity runs the risk of mold 😵💫
Chlorine doesn't vaporiser if u leave it stand over night is the opposite.
A quick google search tells me you are wrong.
Orb is the most difficult plant I have ever grown….and I’ve grown hundreds….I give mine rainwater,warm temps,80% humidity,medium light, fertilize regularly and still the leaves have brown patchy areas everywhere..I water every 1-2X week…I don’t get it???
How regularly do you fertilise and which fertiliser do you use?

I have found that having them in a non glazed pot and bottom watering works like magic. I fill the drip tray and check the bottom sides of the pot regularly. When it no longer feels wet or cool I fill it up again. Since doing this I have no more crispy edges. My water is from my aquariums so it have no chlorine, but it does have other minerals and organics. Hope this helps someone.
