My parents dragged us preteens to the movies in 1968 to see this. We weren't too happy. But then we were utterly astonished by this incredible talent. She could sing, dance, make us laugh, make us cry. There's a good reason that Streisand is such an icon.
Here mother said: Somebody who looks like you can never be a moviestar." Her stepfather treated her like crap because she was not as conventional pretty as her sister was. And years later she said of this situation when she started: "Nobody believed in me. She I decided to believe in myself". Bless her. She has a voice that comes around once in a generation. And yes - she is totally gorgeous!
Funny Girl maybe way before my time. But I feel you as a young cinephile grown bitter by the pandemic and the state of the world’s effects on the film industry.
Was there ever a more daring costume designer than Irene Sharaf? Look at the color combination here... the weird grapes on the shoulder (which give Barbra "business"), the strange combination of materials, and the low-slung waist. AND... it all works... hilarious and somehow flattering at the same time. She hits it out of the part throughout this flick (and many, many others). I mean... olive-green roller skates? Come on! Brilliant.
+Andrew Rudin You're so right Andrew. Sharif was indeed one of the best-ever designers for film & theatre. She had done the costumes for the stage version of Funny Girl, so she knew the era and how to flatter her star better than anyone else would have.
I love that Irene Sharaff did the costumes for the two greatest musical ladies of the 20th century - starting with Judy Garland in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS.
I hate how she says she isn’t pretty. She is absolutely stunning, in a unique way. Not just her acting, singing, or personality that makes her gorgeous. I hate beauty standards so much.
Singers today should really learn from this lady: in this simple tune, she is powerful and vibrant without overdoing it. No yelling or packs of milisma- just beautiful, astonishing singing. Her acting is first rate too.
Singers today can really learn nothing from Barbra Streisand. Because for the most part they don't have that kind of talent. And if a person does have that kind of talent they won't need any help.
I was 12 in 1968. Didn't know who Streisand was. My friends and I wanted to see Oliver but because of a snow storm, we went to a closer theatre and "settled" for Funny Girl. Talk about a life-altering experience. I became an instant fan and never stopped for the next 50 years. Always will be a fan.
I was 13 in '68, but I didn't see my first Streisand film until '72: 'Up the Sandbox.' I hated it. Thankfully I gave her another chance and saw 'What's Up Doc' and 'For Pete's Sake' shortly after, and loved them both. Over the years I've gone back and seen 'Funny Girl,' 'Funny Lady,' 'Hello Dolly,' and 'The Way We Were.' I went on to see 'A Star Is Born,' 'Yentl,' and many others when they were first released...just about everything she's done, actually. I love the lady.
The late Pauline Kael summed up both "Funny Girl" and Barbra Streisand to perfection when she reviewed the film in 1968: "Some people have been saying that the message of 'Funny Girl' is that you do not have to be pretty to succeed. That is nonsense; what 'Funny Girl' illustrates is that talent IS beauty. And that isn't some comforting message for plain people; it's what show business is all about."
It’s just such a sweet and funny way to tell someone how you feel about them through a song. . Fir me this performance is “adorable pure sweetness .☝️🎸😎✌️
My daughters lived with me 1/2 time after their mom and I divorced. I sang songs from Funny Girl to my youngest when I put her to bed every night...I'd Rather Be Blue was her favorite...now she's 32 and proudly tells people that one of best things about having a gay dad was being sung show tunes instead of lullabies.
she has totally re-defined beauty she has proven that u dont have to have bleached blonde hair or plastic surgery to be beautiful this is why she is loved by many and always will be (obviously as well as her amzing singing and acting skills!!!)
She looks just like a collie dog. She said once that people keep asking her why she wouldn't get her nose "fixed" but she was afraid that it would mess up her voice to to it.
In Buffalo my home went 29 times in the snow and cold, December '68 through January '69. This was when movies were up for a year...when they were good like this one.😂❤🎉
I kind of wish this clip had started with the group of skaters doing a musical number with Barbra totally messing up -- hilariously. I laughed until I cried. Then she comes out to do this number and skates beautifully.
I've seen the film umpteen times and the come-away song that stays with me is this sweet melody The simplicity of the arrangement, the pure charm of Streisand's perfectly staged interpretation and the humable melody is still my favorite gem of "Funny Girl". Deeeelicious.

In the 70s, a lot of classic films were re-released to theaters. Films like Gone With The Wind and The Sound Of Music. I got to see both of these, and I got to see Funny Girl. On a very big screen with wonderful sound. I was blown away. I just could not believe what I was seeing. I was immediately hooked and I have been a Barbra Streisand fan ever since.

Still sing Sadie, Sadie married lady to myself when I hear someone’s getting married. Don’t Rain on My Parade and My Man (heartbreaking). I could go on and on. But think you get the picture. If you haven’t seen it, you missed out!
Streisand was a little before my time, but I remember my parents getting a babysitter for us kids so they could go see "A Star Is Born." I've never seen it, but I remember back then it was a huge film, one pretty much everybody saw. While I was never into Barbra's music, I have always been enamored of her beauty. It seems as though most moviegoers nowadays want blood, gore and violence or just plain stupidity.
@@catherinemartinez9802 That’s why I don’t do a lot of R rated movies. My movie diet is G, PG and PG-13. My ideal violence level is mild to moderate.

Agreed! Over-singing is too mainstream ever since Mariah Carey got huge.
Over singing is a very gospel thing, a lot of girls get inspiration from Mariah and Whitney, who got inspired by the gospel.
João Vítor It’s really a matter of style
I like both
Simple melodies like Barbra’s
As well as melisma packed songs like Mariah’s

I'd rather be blue, thinking of you
I'd rather be blue over you

I'm crazy about 'ya, without 'ya
For you I'm strong

Oucha-ma-goucha, don't stay too long!
I need a little ah, little ooh, little Oh

Than be happy with somebody else
Will I be good? Will I be bad?
Don't be a fool, you fool

Into a Sunday school
While you're away I'm here to say
There'll be no ice man there
Singing the blues I'm gonna use
Nothing but Frigidaire

I'd rather be blue over you
Than be happy with somebody else
Blue over you
I'd rather be blue over you
Than be Hap-hap-hap-hap-py
With somebody else
Hope you enjoy it! ❤️
