    I like mine just fine. The raised liners don’t bother me and my lock up is 50% in the correct way 🤘🏻 I also have the Drever from Olight and it’s a much different knife.

    Your problem with the liner lock not adequately engaging the tang, leaving the knife not fully locked, happened to me. I bought an Alliance Designs Bangarang on the secondary market in mist condition, except the lock barely engaged the tang. If I let it lock gently, i.e. by opening it by hand, rather than flicking it open, it would click, and seem to be locked, but only the very corner of the lock engaged the tang. Wiggle the blade a little, and it would come unlocked. It is currently with AD for warrantee service. They were very nice about taking it in for service, so I have no complaints so far. Perfection can be elusive (but it’s sometimes possible)!

    OKnifes are designed and made by Kizer. Scales smaller than liners is called shadow boxing, comfortable or not that design style is quite popular now with many makers.
    They have perfect drop shut action as with all Kizers. Shame about the lock. I hard use mine with no problems though I agree it’s a bit thick behind the edge.

    @yankee2yankee216 Před rokem +1

    I don’t like exposed, protruding, “shadowbox” liners either, but not because I think they’re uncomfortable. I don’t like them mostly because they remind me of all the cheap, dime-store pocket knives I knew as a kid. I always think “cheap” when I see them, which is not to say I always hate them. There are knives with that kind of liners that I like, in which the liners effectively contribute to the design, but in most cases I prefer the liners, which are mostly utilitarian, to be “nested,” i.e. set into the inner faces the scales and so be mostly invisible. Such scales may then be made of beautiful but less structural decorative materials. The liners provide most of the structure in many cases, but in most cases, it is best they do their job unseen.

    I have the OKnife Splint, Drever, and the Beagle. of the three, the Splint is the only one that sees any time in my EDC rotation.

  • @xunil76
    @xunil76 Před rokem

    So...I have the Drever, Mini Drever, Parrot, Beagle, Ratel, Rubato, Nightclaw, and Splint (and I have a Zilla & a Freeze 2 Cu on the way). I also plan on getting their Fortitude fixed blade knife once that one goes on sale as well (normal price of $89.99 seems a tad steep to me for a D2 blade).
    Blade steels are very subjective and a matter of personal taste, as long as you know what things certain steels are and are not good for, their strengths/limitations. The raised liners on the Beagle is also a matter of personal preference, and I personally didn't even notice it on mine until watching this video, meaning it is not uncomfortable to me & did not draw attention to itself in any sort of negative way. The thing I dislike about my Beagle the most is the fact that it does not have a flipper tab in addition to the thumb stud the way the Drever does. On the Drever, I use both simultaneously to really get a good, solid flip with basically no effort (tab to break detent tension, thumb to activate the flip), whereas with the Beagle, the detent is ever so slightly too hard to overcome completely comfortably with it having only the thumb stud to use...*extremely* minor niggle, though.
    Putting all that minor subjective stuff aside, the most important thing brought up in this video is the liner lock issue on the Beagle. I know you're only reporting what you yourself have seen with the one you had your hands on, but the one that I own (purchased Nov 24, 2021) has no such issue, so maybe yours was just in a bad batch, or maybe even a one-off QC issue? The entire width of the liner lock on mine engages on the blade, and covers 1/2 of the width of the blade. The only way it would be a stronger lock is if it were perfectly centered on the with of the blade itself (which would make disengagement more of a struggle). In fact, out of all the OKnives I already own, the one with the "worst" liner lock is the Splint, which still engages 75% of the liner lock on the blade. All the rest engage between 80% - 100%, with the exception of the Rubato (which uses a rail lock), and the Nightclaw (which uses a button lock). So basically, I have no trust issues with any of the 8 OKnives I already own, and don't expect there to be any such issues on the two I have inbound.
    I enjoy all of m OKnives and think that when purchased while on sale, they're an extremely great value...and I'd hate to see them get a black eye for what could literally be a one-off problem (the liner lock issue) without having had a chance to make things right first. I don't care how big a company is, a company is still made up of people...and well...s#!t happens sometimes. It's how effectively they clean up said s#!t that really tells the whole story. I actually like their knives more than most of their lights, personally, and I hope they keep coming out with more models of knives for quite some time.
    Bottom line for all the OKnives is this:
    1) Try to get these when they go on sale for maximum value (most of mine were purchased for less than $65, some as low as $56, plus the Nightclaw @ $30)
    2) If you don't like the steel used, don't buy it..and if you're not already educated on the different steel types, read up and/or watch videos on them before making a purchase
    3) If there's something you think is wrong (or just simply don't like) with the product you DO purchase, at least try to contact them first and give them a chance to make things right (which I think Olight/OKnife will probably do, even for someone who is *not* a youtube reviewer).

      I would put it back in the cart. Of the 30+ in both the micarta and the G10 that I have handled(and I own 2 each), NOT ONE has had the issue of the lockup. Just like knives that cost 2 to 3 times as much, buy it from a reputable store and if you see that yours has an issue send/take it back. Also He is in the vast minority that I have heard of complaining about the shadowbox of the liners. Very solid knife with plenty of grip but not tare up your hands or pocket grip. I have hands on the XL side and I get plenty of purchase and no hotspots. No problems slicing, it's cut and pierced everything I've thrown at it. My only nitpick with the Beagle would be that I would have liked the jimping to come back into the liner similar to the Vigor. All in all another great knife made by Kizer, for Oknife.

    • @xunil76
      @xunil76 Před rokem

      @@bmillemo
      exactly this...can't help but simultaneously laugh and SMFH at all these people commenting here, taking this *one* video on *one* OKnife Beagle as irrefutable proof that ALL the OKnife Beagles are dangerous, which just simply isn't the case. AT BEST, this video should be used solely as something to keep an eye out for, not taken as gospel.
      Just like you said, all their knives are made by Kizer, which typically make very good knives...but there's not a manufacturer out there (of ANYTHING) that doesn't have some issues with production on occasion. The difference is, both Kizer and Olight/OKnife stand behind their products when they're made aware of such issues.

Bit of a shame really, they did do some things well; thumb studs, clip screws, I'd be cool with 154 CM too and I do dig the harpoon profile. (Btw, I'm getting on extremely well with the BK-18). Then I remembered that in China they use beagles for a lot of things including test subjects for all sorts of diseases, chemicals, pretty much everything you can imagine. And the ones that aren’t lucky enough to find that fate often end up in dog meat markets. Interesting call Olight.

    I skipped this one based on the proud liners and lock-bar jimping. I don't know who designed it but Kizer is the manufacturer. They usually do a good job but lemons happen. And exactly this is what i found, after i hold it 5 days ago, for 5 minutes. Olight after all is a good company, but also i don't think excellent (far from being that), producing flashlights, so keep on at this field playing ball , and leave the bar for the drinkers. Can someone maybe explain to me how you combat the inherent problem that micarta has since it absorbs liquids & smells & can cause liners/tang to rust quickly with frequent carry?

    • @Krusher_Knave

      @@SenecaSerpent Thank you. I just always wondered since there are so many CZcamsrs who seem to prefer satin/micarta on folders & after carrying a DLC micarta knife neck-style it really baffled me how much I don't like micarta.
      Totally seems not worth it when you got other options that don't have these problems.
      "Here's some more maintenance you gotta do on your maintenance tool AKA folders." It really seems like you can gain a lot of problems when going to folders over EDC fixed blades. All I have to maintain on my DLC Bradford is strop/sharpen the Cruwear when it wavers. Seems like these choices are lost on me. Like popular now'a'days folders seem mostly gimmicky fun/AC carry only because they can be so impractical.

    With Kizer being the OEM, I'm a little surprised at the QC issues. My kizers have all been flawless. BUT, kizer doesn't really specialize in harder use folders. Another great video, Aaron. Thank you and God bless, brother.

    Somebody better go tell Kershaw that they are doing their liner locks wrong. When I was working there they wanted the liner lock to engage at about 50% just like your showing in the video. I've heard that Olight got Kizer to make the knifes for them.

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 Před 2 lety

      Zt knives have lots of lock geometry issues where the lock fails. I'd assume Kershaw has similar issues. But I only own a blur.

      @AtomicBleach Před 2 lety

      Yup my kershaw leek and my link both only maybe had 50% lock up. The link would pop out under strain and the way the liner lock was designed you could easily engage it while carving.

      @@tacticalcenter8658 the one knife I've continue to carry ever since it came out via their Kickstarter campaign is the StatGear Ausus Slim. I had the company engrave my name in the blade when I backed it. It's a good solid D2 ball bearing knife with G10 scales. The only modification I have done is I filed a little out of the back part of the blade to force the liner lock to engage 100% and I filed the square pocket clip so it was rounded. Since I had to modify the knife to make it function, the company sent another knife to me no questions asked. They are currently having a sale on the knife for $25 a blade. You really can't beat it, best sub $50 knife by far. Ive battoned mine, I use it to cut through signal cable and tough nylon air hoses quite often when I don't have anything else in my pocket. Blade has yet to loosen up on me

      @@AtomicBleach China d2 is not a good steel due to it not being a good steel for mass manufacturing with heat treatment. But for 25$ that's a good deal for something that performs like 8cr13mov with more toughness. I avoid China d2 like the plague these days.

    I wonder if Olight really designed the knife. I bet they just went to a knife company and asked if they had something they could put their brand on. Who knows if they were sent a prototype. And if they were, if they did more than just look at it. For all we know, they could have been emailed a series f pictures and gave the go ahead based on that.

    Making the liners wider than the scales even by a fraction was obviously a conscious design decision... which is what that is so baffling. It literally serves no useful purpose and it's bound to be uncomfortable. So I don't get why they would even choose to do that, which they obviously did. Second, on a liner lock or frame lock imo it has to be safe with as much contact as possible. Anything else is asking for it to close on your fingers and depending on how good an edge you've put on it likely to do some serious damage. Not something I'd especially like to experience in the outdoors! To an inexperienced user this looks like a pretty and good quality knife. To a knife guy as it stands at the moment it has to be a no. I mean, it looks pretty, but so does Amber Heard!

    • @bmillemo
      @bmillemo Před rokem

      I can see maybe why on paper or a video it would be baffling, but in the real world it is not uncomfortable at all and I have hands on the xl side. I guess if you were whiteknuckling your knife for hours on end maybe, but I have 4(2 g10 and 2 micarta) and have had no issues at all. Also I have handled 30+ from multiple vendors and have not seen or heard of a single one with less than a full lockup with the liner.
