Even though I remember "Wario's Woods" being out when I was a kid, I never actually played the NES version until I discovered that it was an unlockable game found within "Animal Crossing" on the Nintendo Gamecube.

I speedrun the SNES version, and though I can see why some don’t like it, I think the skill ceiling is what keeps me coming back. The SNES controls are very hard to figure out, even for experienced speedrunners in the puzzle community. I’m incredibly biased though, since this was my game to chill and zone out with, as well as Tetris Attack and Pokémon Puzzle League later for the N64. I appreciate you giving this game a chance to be given visibility, well done review.

Yeah, Wario's Woods was one of three NES games Nintendo published in 1994, the other two being Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II and Mega Man 6. I heard that there was a campaign to keep the NES alive while the SNES was out in order to make more money, but I'm not sure how true that is.

Must say, I remember the SNES on demo with F-Zero and Mario world at my local "Shop Electric" retailer at the end of July in 1991. I remember it vividly as it was quite a big deal for me at the time. We also had a terrorist bomb one week later which destroyed all of those shops. Kinda makes the memory stick.

Coleraine in Northern Ireland. It took out half the town centre (luckily at night time), no major injuries as it was aimed at the buildings as a statement, but a lot of peoples stored Christmas toys went poof and windows were shattered for miles around. Woke me from my bed 6 miles away. Funny how much different it is now than then. For the good I might add.

Another difference is in the SNES version you can pick up the diamonds, whereas in the NES version you cannot.
I assume the SNES version gets no rereleases is on account it wasn't available in Japan besides a licensed tie-in with some comedy troupe and only via Satellaview, as such it's limited in exposure. Moreover, Wario's Woods biggest claim to fame is its status as the last first-party entry for the Famicom/NES, essentially making it the coda to Nintendo's first successful machine.

Same for me, I absolutely love Wario's Woods for the SNES. Its added complexity by controlling Toad instead of whatever falls down makes it so much fun and deep - and boy, me and my sister really played this thing competitively. And it is very odd, that to this day the - in my opinion far superior - SNES version is still not available on the Virtual Console or Nintendo Online on the Switch. Still just NES version. It looks like they took Puyo Puyo and made it unnecessarily complicated by having to manually place bombs instead of just doing a match-3 game. Also the NES version really suffers when it comes to colours. Well most of the NES games do which is a shame. 😢
