Even though I remember "Wario's Woods" being out when I was a kid, I never actually played the NES version until I discovered that it was an unlockable game found within "Animal Crossing" on the Nintendo Gamecube.
Man, remember when Nintendo just gave away full NES games inside other games?
@@SameNameDifferentGame yeah, i unlocked mario bros when i beated super mario world on the gba
Playing this on my NES Classic at the minute and loving it. Very addictive once you get the hang of it.
I tend to think it's just ok, as I said in the video, but it does have an addictive quality, like all good puzzlers.
Try the snes version if you ever get a chance its leaps and bounds better in every way
You must have a modded classic cuz this isn't one of the 30 games
I speedrun the SNES version, and though I can see why some don’t like it, I think the skill ceiling is what keeps me coming back. The SNES controls are very hard to figure out, even for experienced speedrunners in the puzzle community. I’m incredibly biased though, since this was my game to chill and zone out with, as well as Tetris Attack and Pokémon Puzzle League later for the N64. I appreciate you giving this game a chance to be given visibility, well done review.
Thanks for watching!
I think the difficulty and platforming controls were what kept me coming back to it as a kid
Also the SNES game had a great sound track
@@orsonzedd The game sounds and voices are 10/10 for sure!
4:11 wait, is that Paul Rudd in that snes commercial?
It is!
Just found your videos and they are so great. Thanks for posting up quality retro based content.
Thanks for watching!
hell yes. looking forward to the rest of this series (:
Glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
Yeah, Wario's Woods was one of three NES games Nintendo published in 1994, the other two being Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II and Mega Man 6. I heard that there was a campaign to keep the NES alive while the SNES was out in order to make more money, but I'm not sure how true that is.
Yeah, that would make sense, but a company only has so many resources. But it is weird considering how much overlap the PS2 and PS3 had, you know?
Must say, I remember the SNES on demo with F-Zero and Mario world at my local "Shop Electric" retailer at the end of July in 1991. I remember it vividly as it was quite a big deal for me at the time. We also had a terrorist bomb one week later which destroyed all of those shops. Kinda makes the memory stick.
Well, that took a bit of a turn. I'm sorry that happened, sounds awful. I hope the games stuck out a bit on their own, not just the tragedy.
Million times better nowadays. To be honest, Gaming got me through a lot of those times. Great channel. Thanks for your efforts.
Coleraine in Northern Ireland. It took out half the town centre (luckily at night time), no major injuries as it was aimed at the buildings as a statement, but a lot of peoples stored Christmas toys went poof and windows were shattered for miles around. Woke me from my bed 6 miles away. Funny how much different it is now than then. For the good I might add.
What a coincidence! This is your first snes video and this was my first snes game!
Well, my first for the Super Summer, it wasn't the first SNES game I ever covered.
@@SameNameDifferentGame Oops that's what I meant
Another difference is in the SNES version you can pick up the diamonds, whereas in the NES version you cannot.
I assume the SNES version gets no rereleases is on account it wasn't available in Japan besides a licensed tie-in with some comedy troupe and only via Satellaview, as such it's limited in exposure. Moreover, Wario's Woods biggest claim to fame is its status as the last first-party entry for the Famicom/NES, essentially making it the coda to Nintendo's first successful machine.
I didn't realize the SNES version only came out as a Satelleview thing in Japan. Crazy.
Nice episode as always :)
Thumb Up
Never played warios woods. got to check it out
Thanks, dude!
What about comparing Bionic Commando on NES to the arcade and Game Boy versions? Or R.C. Pro Am on Genesis to NES, Battletoads on its multiple versions, Splatterhouse on arcade and TG-16?
Yeah, several of those are ones I plan to cover. But you know, you can make a request by contributing to my Patreon or right now, by giving to our Extra Life campaign!
I just made a donation on your Patreon and sent a request.
Thank you!
Yet again another great t-shirt!
Thanks!
Having beaten Wario Woods on Switch, I still don't know how I defeated the bosses!
They kinda suck.
Ohya, the controls take some getting use to but I'm definitely one of those gamer's that love this game.
Yeah, seems like a lot of folks are, but it never clicked for me.
Same for me, I absolutely love Wario's Woods for the SNES. Its added complexity by controlling Toad instead of whatever falls down makes it so much fun and deep - and boy, me and my sister really played this thing competitively. And it is very odd, that to this day the - in my opinion far superior - SNES version is still not available on the Virtual Console or Nintendo Online on the Switch. Still just NES version. What gives, Nintendo?
I think this is the first Same Name Different game youve done where Ive never played the game before.
I had to get to one eventually.
There was a snes version?
There was! You wouldn't know it, because Nintendo seems to only re-release the NES one, but yeah.
I like the NES music on this game a lot better.
It's fine? I don't know. I don't really love either soundtrack, to be completely honest.
You also cannot pick up diamonds in the NES version
That sounds about right.
Been playing the NES version for many years. Easily one of the best puzzle games on the NES and I absolutely recommend it.
The NES version is definitely the better of the two.
9:28 nope! Let's not erase Alexey Pajitnov from his well deserved role in gaming history
I did a whole video about Tetris. That doesn't change the fact that Nintendo developed and released multiple versions of Tetris.
Never knew there was a nes version. I grew up with the snes version. It's a pretty relaxing game once you understand what you're doing. I wish I could play it again.
It's on Switch online, isn't it?
@@SameNameDifferentGame Did they release the snes version on the switch? I could've sworn it was only the nes version. I'm going to look it up in a bit.
@@spineluminous9751 You definitely could be right.
Hi Joe! I got lucky and bought a snes for only 75 bucks. I'm gonna ply out the prongs to make it region free.
It is awful Nintendo forgot all about the snes version.
Only the NES Version is on switch because of historical event as the final official NES game
Nice! Love to have a region-free SNES!
@@SameNameDifferentGame I'm looking through all your snes videos to see what I could get.
I already plan on The Ken Griffey games and some puzzles including this
well is the same thing how rareware made donkey kong popular again with donkey kong country
Yeah, I can see that.
Nes controls were so intuitive.
Much moreso than the SNES, I thought.
@@SameNameDifferentGame way better on snes, you can kick stuff plus wth Is up with the nes version on how you cant pick up for diamonds
@@19krocker91 I don't know, man. Maybe if I spent a lot more time to get used to the controls? But as it stands, I just found them too cumbersome.
honestly, it never really did anything for me either, and i fancy myself quite a puzzle game kind of guy. it always kind of bums me out because the idea of having a guy running around inside the puzzle controlling the environment sounds AMAZING. sadly it wasn't meant to be, at least not for you and i, Joe. looking forward to more Super Summer!
Glad I'm not the only one!
Yeah but counterpoint, this is the best non Diddy Kong game ever made
That certainly is a take.
@@SameNameDifferentGame It's not just a take, it's the truth.
But let me be serious. The merging of platforming and puzzle elements is brilliant and I can't think of any other ones like it.
Also, I'm fine with games requiring you to familiarize yourself with the mechanics, I mean, it's not like there aren't top level skills in other games, but no one teaches you how to T-Spin.
@@orsonzedd I'm fine with games that make you familiarize yourself with controls and gameplay, but this game really feels like it's frontloaded. By the 2nd world, you're just getting crushed by the CPU unless you really know your stuff.
@@SameNameDifferentGame I don't know what to say, but I beat it as an illiterate 8 year old back in 1994 or 95. I'll agree that compared to today the game doesn't take the time out of your life to educate you unless you ask for that, but I don't know that that's a bad thing necessarily.
@@orsonzedd I valued my time a lot less as an eight year-old than I do now.
This game looks charming, but yeah, I can see where the gameplay would get repetitive quickly.
Yeah, like I said, some people really like it, but I think it gets tedious pretty quickly.
was this on gameboy I don't think it was
There is not, to my knowledge, a Game Boy version.
Never played either game, and it doesn't look like I've missed much. Looking forward to the Super Summer!
Some folks really like it, but nah, I don't think you missed much. Glad you're looking forward to it! I'm looking forward to you guys taking on MK2!
Joe has so many awesome Less Than Jake shirts!
I don't know exactly how many I have, but I know it's at least one for every day of the week.
Hey, Joe - are you a Short Fuse Burning?
Nah. I don't have a mile-wide chip on my shoulder. I think I'm more of a Plastic Cup politician.
I gotta know, though - How's My Driving?
You should ask Doug Hastings.
actullay loin king was the last game on the nes officaly
Only in Europe.
@@SameNameDifferentGame i know
FYI Tetris was not made by nintendo it was a Russian company and second there are also tetris games on different consoles
Yes, I know, but my point was that by the time Wario's Woods came out, Nintendo had done no less than three versions of Tetris and should have understood what makes a falling block puzzler appealing, you know?
It looks like they took Puyo Puyo and made it unnecessarily complicated by having to manually place bombs instead of just doing a match-3 game. Also the NES version really suffers when it comes to colours. Well most of the NES games do which is a shame. 😢
