    I've wanted to get a 10.5" 4-track tape deck for a long time. I took a chance on buying one untested and having it shipped to me, knowing that it had been sitting for at least a couple of years with no use and realizing that I would probably have to do something to it in order to get it going again. This video shows the unboxing, repair, and a brief playback demonstration on the deck. Fortunately the repairs were of a mechanical nature - so I was able to get everything moving smoothly without too much hassle.
    A common problem with tape decks that sit unused for long periods is that grease and oil harden over time, becoming more like a glue than a lubricant. This is what happened to the pinch roller arm mechanism, so I needed to disassemble, clean and lubricate the arm in order to make playback and speed regulation on the deck functional. As a side note - before I did the demonstration and hooked everything back up, I cleaned the tape heads with alcohol, polished up exterior of the deck, and also lubricated the pots and switches with some Deoxit. I didn't outline any of that in the video.
    This video was kind of a last minute idea, but I hope you enjoyed it and found it useful/informative if you have a deck like this in need of some TLC.

    I just purchased the 2340R. I have not even plugged it in yet, its pretty dirty and needs to be cleaned. I also purchased a Teac 1250 and a Technics 1506. They are all in rough shape. I been posting it on my Stage Monkey channel. I have not had a chance to look at any of these units and I paid $300 for all 3. I hope it was worth it! lol

    The capstan assembly didnt need to come all the way out. You loosen the two setscrews thst holds the flywheel to the shaft. When returning the flywheel to the shaft, you get the .001" needed clearance, with the rear bracket in place and you push in on the shaft and move the flywheel up to the front and back off a light touch snd snug down a setscrew to check clearance.
    Its in the service manual.

    Hi Waylon,
    I have a question for you.
    I have tried twice now from two "different" brands (they were identical), to purchase NAB Hub adapters on Amazon. They are all the same design from China.
    They don't fit my brand new NOS (almost) TEAC 3340. I love the look with all that shiny aluminum but what the heck? When mounted on a 10.5 reel correctly they have expanded out just enough that the 3 spline reel table locking lug won't spin over the center and capture it. If I intentionally misalign the back tabs on the hub adapter so they push through a reel of tape I was able to lock the 3 spline shaft but now the hub itself is not locked on the reel of tape and all manner of fun could possibly happen at high wind speeds. Have you had luck with the Burlington or the expensive french REM versions? Or is there another solution?
    Best, Tod

      Hi Tod,
      Thanks for your comment - I wish I had more insight on the different NAB hub adapters you mentioned, but I haven't tried any of those types. When I bought this deck, it came with the stock adapters and I've just stuck with those. So aside from looking at some of the shiny aluminum ones on eBay, I can't say anything definitively from experience. But - it does seem like with most aftermarket upgrades, usually the more high end expensive gear offers better customer support and seems to pay more attention to the details. Whenever I've tried cheap Chinese copies of other products, I typically get what I pay for and experience some of the frustration like you mentioned.
      Food for thought, but that probably wasn't super helpful to your question so I apologize... If you end up trying out the Burlington or REM, let me know how it goes! I'd be curious.
      Thanks,
      Waylon

    Hi Waylon, I was wondering if you can help as I see that you have some experience with 3340. My right reel table is making scraping noise. I tried swapping out the reel table and still the same issue with the right side (thought it might be a bent reel table as it feel fwd during transit). Any solution on how to fix the issue?

      You take the side panels off and with a 2mm Allen, you loosen up the two setscrews that locks the table assembly on the motor shaft. The clearance between the base of the table and deckplate is 2mm. Get that spacing and tighten up the two setscrews and put the side panels back on.

      @Guitar28000  Před 2 lety +1

      As far as I know, it hasn't had any problems with over-heating. It's been in storage for a little while while I renovate so I haven't used it lately. Last time it was out, it was good.

    I've had a 3340S for a long time. It has had very little use and is in good working order. It has always been stored in a temperate place. I have been looking for some time to pass it on in a reasonable transaction to someone who could give it a second life. Contact me through my CZcams channel.

      @@yourwindowguy1 Indeed, something new every day! Haha. I can't imagine not doing this stuff now that I've come back to it. For a good chunk of time I didn't really do any recording, and last year when I started picking it up again it felt like coming home. Hopefully I'll get a lot of good use out of this deck and can incorporate it more and more in the future. Did you own a large reel tape deck at one time? I remember you telling me you were into tape back in the day.

      @@Guitar28000 Yes I did but when I had mine I just did Desktop percussion and vocal soundings to create music back in the eighties. I would record on a cassette tapeAnd then play cassette tape and do vocals on reel to reel withThe cassette playing in the background and bounced back-and-forth until it just sounded terrible In the end Lol. So much fun looking back at that ...and of course looking back on when we used to record in the basement!

      @@yourwindowguy1 That's awesome. Those times recording in the basement are some high quality memories. Ten years ago already - wow! I wish we would have taken some videos as well, but I'm grateful for the recordings that came out of it. Now I'm recording in my basement! haha. I just bought a giant 8 channel snake for this deck so I am looking forward to utilizing all four tracks at once on a video in the near future. Stay tuned!

    • @Guitar28000
      @Guitar28000  Před 3 lety

      This tape is one of the few I have that is not part of that collection - All of those are on 7" or smaller plastic tape reels, and this one is on a 10.5" metal reel. Bigger reel = more tape, more recording time. Usually better quality too depending on the brand.
