It wasn't the director who doesn't want either one to lose. Both dancers were considered the greatest dancers of their type of dance so they refused to lose in the dance-off. So the only way the director can end the dance is by creating a distraction for them to stop at the same time.

    Some interesting facts.
This song was shot for 16 days.
14 days individual portions were shot and 2 days they shot together
    And it was joined together.
Both were equally excellent trained dancers when their names had to be put in film there was a lot of discussion whose name should come first .
If ones name came at the top.
The other wld feel offended coz both were equally god's and popular.
So they came up with an idea.
Padmini was very famous in the south and vyjayanthi mala was famous in hindi.
So in Tamil film padminis name came first and in Hindi vyjayanthi mala s name came first.
Later on padmini no also became very famous in Hindi industry.
In those days there used to be Jewellery designer who used to design for heroinesin a particular film and that' s why the jewels fit perfectly to suit the heroines.
There were People who watched this film for 50 to 60 times only for this song.
And if anybody did yoga you can understand there are lots of yoga postures in this dance.

Padmini (the one who started the song) is from the famous 'Travancore Sisters' and later they also had a team called 'Dancers of India'. They were the pioneers (along with few others) in establishing the now famous song and dance culture we associate with Indian movies which had their roots in traditional Indian art forms. The other dancer is Vyjayanthimala who is probably one of the best dancers Indian cinema has ever seen. Padmini's niece Shobana is also a famous actress / dancer in her own right.
