    Most of the comments are too harsh calling those tourists stupid just because now people know about tsunami, I don't think those people realized what was going on, or how lucky they were, I myself have never heard of a tsunami before 2004 even though I live in a coastal city on the Mediterranean and we have waves but you never expect them to do this!

      @@randomly_random_0 preach, I always get really upset and sad when people start showing hate to the people that looked and filmed. One: as you stated above people did not know, nothing like this had happened on this scale during this time period prior. Two: from watching videos of people interviewed after the tsunami struck alot of people explained how people where memorized by the ocean during and leading up to the tsunamis and that makes sense hence me being slightly obsessed with it myself lol. Then the people who are like your an idiot why didn't you run as we stated above if it where them back then odds would have been they where probably like 8 and even if they where older they most likely would not have known and given that the nasty comments are on videos of watching people who where watching the tsunami I have a funny feeling that they also would want to watch given the context.

    I grew up right smack dab in the middle of the US, consequently where I was when this happened. I had heard of tsunamis, I knew what they were, but until this happened I didn't know any warning signs. I'll admit, I probably would have been standing on the beach too, not recognizing what was coming. So I don't judge these people harshly, but I do find myself wishing for them to run. What is surprising to me is that even the locals weren't beating a hasty retreat. I read somewhere that tsunamis aren't a common occurrence there, also surprising since Indonesia sits so close to two major plates and the fault line is just right off the coast.

I find judgmental comments on footages from boxing day 2004 in the Indian ocean annoying. Poor souls.

    I think one of the reasons the tsunamis were not very devastating at least on this part of the island was do to the depth of sea,looking into the distance you can see the waves have crested suggesting the sea was very shallow at that distance which would have allowed the wave to expend much of its power before reaching shore especially if the waves are coming close together,if the sea depth had been quite deep at that distance than we would have been looking at a much different dangerous scenerio.

Quickly changing tides can generate huge waves in some parts of China once or twice a year during high tide. How can that man not see what is coming is dangerous? The others kept telling him to come up. He is lucky to have seen this without harm.

      @@chrisemerson7743 actually the wave had been broken, but the later water mass still pushing forward. This made the water level higher.
      The wave height on the video was pretty average, like in the rainy season, but the mass and pushing power was so incredible. Someone would not have a chance to stand still the pushing power of that ravaging ocean.
      If I were there, I'd be hypnotized also by the strange waves.

      Fighter Cat What do u mean by “the wave had been broken”? Also, the reason the water level was rising was because of an earthquake. The tsunami came in just a little ways at first and most people didn’t notice. Then the water started to retreat more and more. But the whole time the waves are still breaking but only going backwards. During this time the water is actually building up, waiting for the energy from the earthquake to catch up. When it does it comes in at about 60mph.

      It's all well and said in hindsight, but this was 15 years ago (this IS the history), back then the majority of people hadn't even heard the word 'Tsunami' let alone knew what one was. You had to take an A-level/college degree in Geology just to be taught the basics. Tsunamis on this scale had never happened before in the 'modern digital world' so there was no reference material other than a few grainy B&W pics from the aftermath of the Alaskan earthquake/tsunami from 1964 (non from the event itself).
      Luckly, with both modern communication and the internet's ability to spread information within a matter of hours we are able to spread this type of warning information a lot better and much more widely :)

    • @Ryukai-san
      @Ryukai-san Před 5 lety

      It's not a Tidal wave, tidal waves (normally called Bore's) only affect the first couple of meters of the ocean/sea surface and are a result of the Sun/Moon combined gravity (hence the word Tidal in the name) pulling on the ocean surface in a particular way at certain times of year in a specific area. They are completely predictable and mostly harmless (check out videos of one called the Severn Bore).
      This on the other hand is a Tsunami, these are generated by Earthquakes/Landslides and are a result of a massive amount of water being pushed away from the earthquake/landslide area and affect the ENTIRE column of water from the surface all the way down to the sea floor. They can be many Kilometers/Miles deep as well as a couple of kilometers/miles wide (for each wave, and there can be multiple waves one after the other, and can take over a day for the ocean/sea to stop oscillating back and forth).
      We can only 'predict' what will happen shortly after the Tsunami has formed (and if it forms close to shore there isn't enough time as there can be only minutes between both earthquake and tsunami happening on a coastline) and even then it can take anything up to an hour to accurately figure out how high the wave will be along coastal areas, something that people near by don't have :(

But because the Thais live DIFFERENTLY than you do, you want to castigate them. No wonder our country is losing its global presence and influence. People are not willing and they’re too smart to become the puppets of this country anymore. They also have money, power, weapons, and most importantly, each other. They’re cohesive, not divided and stuck in the mentality of racism, arrogance, elitism, and separatism. People like you are evolving into the small minds of their pets instead of cats, dogs, & bunnies evolving to shit in a toilet and eat with distinction at the dinner table.
