  • Converting my 6 volt 8N to a 12 volt system. This should give the tractor an easier start up. With new wires, alternator and 12 volt coil the tractor should run for years to come.

    Wanted to give you a very much Thank You for this video. It helped me alot. I just got a 49 8n and the generator was bad so I converted it to 12 volt. Those kits are very vague on directions. Your video was not. It walked me right though it all. Good job.

    You should have left the neutral safety switch in the system to keep from getting run over when you start the tractor. It is a life saver. It is easy to wire it in.

    Paid $40 bucks for a 1wire alternator from eBay and it’s working great. Used the existing bolt from the generator.

    You should have used a red wire for your positive to avoid confusion and you can use original neutral safety start switch with a relay to control positive to start solenoid

    great video Thankyou Maybe a silly question. I am converting from 6 to 12. I bought a 12volt coil that says no resister required. Would that mean I dont even need a ballist resister? Thanks

    • @fallingstarranch9633
      @fallingstarranch9633  Před 3 lety

      That’s a good question. Does the coil you bought have an internal resister? And is your coil mounted where mine was in the video or on the side of the tractor?

    • @dmmacneill
      @dmmacneill Před 3 lety

      My coil is on the other side. I’m assuming it must have a built in

    Just a note, any voltage can use positive or negative ground. Does not matter 6, 8, 12, or 24. Seems as though most of the earlier stuff used pos. ground and I forget the reason why.

    What kind of job do you work at, you seem very knowledgeable about electrical systems on this tractor. Are you an electrician by trade by chance?

    • @fallingstarranch9633
      @fallingstarranch9633  Před 3 lety +2

      I work in a textile plant. While working there they had me working on these circuit boards and wiring them up. I had to teach myself how they work. I had to wire up a bunch of boards and re-wire some old lines that were out of date. If something goes wrong with any of machines they get me to look at it and troubleshoot the problem. I help put in machinery and make sure the wiring is correct along with actually assembling the machine with my fellow overhaulers.
      I learned a lot about 12 volt systems growing up with my father and grandpa. They had me wiring stuff up at age 9 or 10. I’ve been working on cars and tractors ever since then.

    That is not safe with a starter switch like that . Always use the one on the top of the transmission that has a built in safety so it will only start in neutral.

    But why

    • @fallingstarranch9633
      @fallingstarranch9633  Před 3 lety +1

      A 12 volt system has more amps to power the system that I eventually want to put on it. The lights I’m gonna install will be brighter and the tractor will start up a whole lot better. The 6 volt was good for what I had but I started having starting issues with it. So I decided to overhaul the whole system.

    • @anthonyparker8519
      @anthonyparker8519 Před 3 lety

      Also the 6v system takes for ever to turn over the motor in cold weather it would take 30 mins sometimes to fire one up also we have an 8n that has a key start no push button but the battery likes to drain when shut off so something is drawling juice I haven't figured it out yet
