    I did something similar years ago and after studying how those roll up / drop down shades work on a sun porch. I attached my tarps tight to the ceiling and used a piece of 1" metal conduit on the bottom of the "curtain" to give it enough weight so it would roll up as I drew the cords. I attached a cleat to the wall so I had a place to tie off the cords when the curtains were drawn up for storage. In my case I made a curtain for each side and the door end only comes down to the height of the lowest door section. (roughly) For ventilation I place a 20" fan on one side of the open garage door and a filter on the other end. The center is blocked by a piece of plywood (cut to fit) and the gap at the top of the door is mostly blocked by the curtain at the ceiling. Not perfect, but maybe 5 minutes to set up. Clean up can be done with a garden hose as long as I let things dry overnight before rolling the curtains up again. Probably spent $100 on everything but it's been up for 15 years and still works well. Well enough to keep the overspray off the other 5 cars in the garage with minimal effort.

    Add a center rib on ceiling to drap a tarp over it to create a ceiling to prevent overspary.... you also need ventilation also to prevent dry overspay dropping on wet paint job

    Nice. I actually took your idea mounted to box fans in a 30 inch by 8 foot tall box and ran my upper Runners from there and now I tie it all back into that simple panel very nice dude thanks for the heads up I'll show you pictures

    Same here. Gotta give like it’s at 666. Scary lol
    Just keep the floor hoses down with water and ad a outlet fan with some fresh filter “furnace filter” incoming air and it can look as good as some body shops. Know how to cut and buff and no one would ever know but u. And u got an extra 6-12000 in ur pocket

    I assume that you are using water borne vs solvent based paint systems since the fan and lights are not explosion proof

    Agreed on tarps--plastic sheeting is way more expensive than I'd expect! Going to set this up not. (Btw looks like you barely have room to move around a car in there! Ha)

    if there is no ceiling what is the point of the curtains. Will not the paint go up and over and on to everything, not to mention the fumes going into the house? I would like to see an outdoor temporary booth that can be put up in 15 minutes.

    Good idea but you really need a ceiling to prevent dust and overspray on tools and other stuff in garage

    • @AdventuresinFabrication
      @AdventuresinFabrication  Před 7 lety

      I'v done a couple of small jobs in there with no problem (dust or over spray). The fan was able to keep the air moving out of the booth without any issues. I think the real test will be coming up in a week or two when I do a larger job. Of course larger is a relative term, it is a one car garage so I will never be painting a car or anything nearly that size (it's only 10'x14' inside).
      The tarps are pretty much up against the wall which really limits overspray and any contaminates from getting in or out.
      If necessary, it will be very easy to add cross bars and a ceiling.
      So far it is working out great, the short setup time and teardown time has made it a no brainer to use even on small projects.

    • @772777777777777
      @772777777777777 Před 7 lety

      for large spray job you need ventilation, dry overspray will kill your work!

  • @Rcarnes911
    @Rcarnes911 Před 7 lety

    Good idea but i think i would get some of those big wicker blinds and attach at layer of plastic to them, and use those then all you have to do is pull a string to roll up or take down the paint booth

    • @bigred4379
      @bigred4379 Před 2 lety

      I already have some of those hanging on one end of the garage to keep dust off my shelves, so usually i attach plastic on that end. But this is just what i need for the two sides.

    Where and how do you set up your vent fans and do you have them blowing outside or just outside the containment into the garage?

    • @curtshontz163
      @curtshontz163 Před 6 lety

      Tomijko Wiggins- I have the same question. Blowing the fans into the painting space creates beneficial positive pressure and reduces the chance that volatile vapors will pass through the electric motors. Just need to provide a vent path to the outdoors and to be sure the door into the house is gasketed tightly.

  • @mattkeefe3850
    @mattkeefe3850 Před 6 lety +3

    Well done. But what about ventilation? You need to remove chemical laden air.

    • @AdventuresinFabrication
      @AdventuresinFabrication  Před 6 lety

      You are correct, I started out with one exhaust fan but later added a second as the size of my projects increased. There are air filters over the front of the fans.

    • @bettynickelson779
      @bettynickelson779 Před 6 lety

      Where did you place fans for ventilation

    • @AdventuresinFabrication
      @AdventuresinFabrication  Před 6 lety +1

      At the door side of the booth. The tarp wall is offset from the door by about 2 ft so when I am spraying I partially raise the door about 3 ft. I originally put a hole for one fan but later added a second to suck the fumes out. There are air filters in front of the fans. You can see them in action in my "Band Saw Restoration" video.

  • @NormalGuy
    @NormalGuy Před 6 lety

    Cool idea. I'd be worried about the dust/dirt accumulation on the tarps after being rolled up for extended periods. Has that crossed your mind?

    • @AdventuresinFabrication
      @AdventuresinFabrication  Před 6 lety

      I haven't had any issue with dust accumulation. I use the booth about once a month. I have taken them down once since I built the booth and washed them off, but that was to clean off the overspray that accumulated on them. I have installed a second fan to help with the overspray.

  • @777smitty4
    @777smitty4 Před 6 lety +5

    that is not a paint booth it’s hanging drop cloths a paint booth is meant to control the environment (remove dust , bugs , overspray)

    • @Whitening98
      @Whitening98 Před 4 lety

      I worked at a dealership with curtains like this to do paint jobs. If your going to be painting in your garage your not going to get a perfect job meaning most likely you’ll be wet sanding and buffing. Nothing wrong with this booth if your not wanting to take down every time you want to use it.

    Ventilation and lighting?

    • @AdventuresinFabrication
      @AdventuresinFabrication  Před 6 lety +1

      I have ventilation out the front of the garage, I originally started with one fan but increased to two later. Ventilation is dependent on the size of the job and is trade off, after paint, air filters are biggest consumable expense. So I either run one of two depending on the job. Lighting, I started out with old florescent lights, I quickly came to realize that the most important factor impacting the quality of the paint jobs was light so I upgraded to LED bulbs (they doubled the light). However, I do need to add some side lighting, lighting very, very important and in my case was under appreciated.
