  • Traditionally performed to please and sing praises of Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna, the spectacular Gotipua Dance is performed by young boys giving meaning to its name.
Founded in 1975, Orissa Dance Academy runs under the guidance of Guru Aruna Mohanty. The performing members of the Academy will be conducting the Gotipua Dance at the upcoming event. Gotipua is an ancient dance form, native to Odisha. In Odia language, “Goti” means “single” and “Pua” means “boy”. Traditionally performed to please and sing praises of Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna, the dance is performed by young boys only thus giving meaning to its name. The young boys dress up in female attire for the dance wearing their traditional dress "Kanchula". Gotipua dance form took shape in the 16th century and saw widespread acclaim under the Bhoi Dynasty. It is often called the predecessor to the currently prevalent Odissi classical dance.

These boys must have been subjected to extremely demanding training and discipline to perform such difficult acrobatic moves. I hope they did not have to sacrifice their childhood to a life of confinement and servitude at their tender age 🙏🙏🙏

      "These boys..."
They are all girls and their bun is under that white floral (I think) head piece behind their heads. Boys do NOT wear such head and body ornaments.

Alexandra Rodriguez My 2 cents .
In Odishi danceform, Devdashis dance for Jagganatha. Gotipua was started ,when Vaishanavas (Lord Vishnu Worshipers) didn't approve of girls to dance so boys danced dressed as girls. Gotipua dance to songs of Radha and Krishna.
Odishi dance form died during British era, however Gotipua survived. The modern Odishi dance form is influenced by gotipua dance. It is like a circle Odishi/Devdashi--> Gotipua --> Modern Odishi
