  • Ms.Rukmini Vijayakumar, is a prominent south Indian Bharatanatyam Dancer was the first speaker. She is currently pursuing a Fitness Training Certification at UCLA, and a professional dancer's MFA program in Bharatanatyam at the Shastra University, Chennai under Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. In her talk she compared the Indian dance and the western by saying that the Indian dance is traditional and the western is novelistic; and she also differentiated the old dance, how it was and the present dance style, how it got changed and improvised over the years. To conclude she left the audience spell bound with her marvelous performance!

Bharathanatiyam is a name coined recently when the art form was taken over from the Tamil communities dedicated to the temples art activities from ancient times. It was called as Sathirattam and after all the Tamil kingdoms had their downfalls to Telugu and other North Indian powers. The music especially language used in the art form were taken to other languages that were promoted by the rulers. At the same time the art form was pushed into a situation that misconstrued the communities involved in the art form to a caste system used in North Indian kingdoms as “Devadashi”. When all the Tamil language and art forms were demonized by the Sanskritization both lingually and socially - the British period helped the revival of the art form - when Telugu and other Brahminical North Indian powers were brought under the British. Rukmini Devi Arundale is the pioneer in reversing that social discrimination and help raising the current versions of Bharathanatiyam art form.

Such BS about history of evolution of dance and devdasi. Revived? British almost killed the Indian classical dances due to devotion to Hindu gods. Devdasi system was prevalent in south not north. The first confirmed reference to a Devadasi was during the Keshari Dynasty in the 6th century CE in South India.
British missionaries first tried to make temple dancers to stop dancing about Hindu legends and switch to Jesus. When they refused they went on active campaign the ban the dance itself. The whole smear campaign jeopardized many of it's forms and equated the dancers to prostitutes only. Manipuri dance survived just in one temple. Kathak's classical form survived due to one family - Bindadin Maharaj took it upon himself and kept the art going in his family through his sons. That' how the Kathak "gharana" came to be and the dancers from his family were all male. Navab of Lucknow, gave patronage to help it keep going. Caste? This was a brahmin family.
In north Kathak dancers didn't always stay at one place and used to be wandering dancers, going place to place. During Islamic rules court and temple patronage went down. Later Mughal courts took it up but to suit court culture and times, kathak dancer made changes to survive. The emphasis increased more on showmanship and the foot movements( tatkar) and circular movements increased and the theme of the dance was more about Shringar than bhakti to suit the court culture. Though later banaras gharana ( started later by one of the sons from Lucknow gharana) focused on bhakti.
Our dances have faces challenges of colonial rule and survived.
