I adore Mary's story. I love that they didn't just go down the 'unlikable wife getting in the way of baby boy's happiness' route but showed it was actually mutual.
And they had the guts to make Stede a thoroughly unlikeable asshole in this episode - until he stopped trying to play his assigned role. He and Mary were so much happier once they spoke honestly to each other.
@@gardnerhill9073 I love how this story's thesis statement of being open and constructive with your feelings extents to Mary as well, not just the pirates. Talk it through as a crew, even with your spouse!
I could so easily see her being vilified in a different telling of the story. Much like I could see a version of the premise where a funny effeminate Stede crushes on the cool manly Edward, but not only is it the other way around (Ed's infatuation with Stede is more immediately obvious), it's also not that black and white and they both get to be soft and tough. The show has such fresh takes on lots of tropes you'd expect to go one way based on how they've been handled in the past.

3. Whole fandom thinks Lucius somehow climbed to the ship (there are little windows on the side of the ship) and is now living in Stede's secret passages
4. David Jenkins said that Ed is now gonna become the monster everyone think he is
5. Can you imagine Ed somehow finding out Stede died not knowing it was a fake death? I'm scared
About 3. If you look closely you can see a rope hanging by the side of the ship when ed pushed lucius overboard. Hope he grabbed it.

The fandom theory is that Lucius is living within the secret passages that Steed built into the ship “just for fun”.
stede said earlier in the season that lucius being dead would bring down the overall “vibe” so, no, i think he’s okay. it is still a comedy. welcome to the labyrinth of pain! :,)

In all honesty though, the only way Ed and Stede can truly reconcile is with Lucius around - because no matter how much Stede loves Ed, if Ed actually succeeded in killing Lucius, that would be a bridge too far. The writers also aren't idiotic enough to kill off the heart of the show, so I'm 1000% serious when I say that I would bet mine and my family's life that Lucius is alive and well, most likely hiding in Stede's secret passages eating paper or something.
even if they intended to actually kill lucius off, his character is a fan-favorite and he's brought so much to the show. I'm sure after seeing the fans reactions, they'll bring him back :')

There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that Lucius is dead. Not because of fan reactions or the famous "no body no death" rule, but simply because it doesn't make narrative sense, and the writers would have to be MONUMENTALLY stupid to not understand something this basic. And they're definitely anything but stupid. Lucius is 10000% alive and I'd bet mine and my family's life on that.
The creator David Jenkins has said time and time again that this show is at it’s heart a romance, and I don’t see how Ed and Stede could have a happy ending if Lucius is actually dead. Therefore he must be alive!
Absolutely. First, 1) This show of all shows would not do the Bury Your Gays trope - not when the queer community is their core audience. And 2) Ed murdering Lucius would be unforgiveable to Stede. *Attempted* murder? ...Well, pirates will pirate, that's a gray area...
Between Jim wanting to throw Lucius overboard and his finger getting infected, Lucius almost dying is kind of a running gag at this point, even though it's not played for humor here. Apparently there's a deleted scene where Roach and some others accidentally make him OD on something as well. I can't see him being dead now.
This show truly is my comfort show and depression show at the same time which is why I am now stuck in an endless cycle of watching it over and over and over again. It's cursed and I love it.

Gnossienne 5 (Ed & Stede love song) was composed by Erik Satie not Claude Debussy. Although they were both French composers working during the same time period.

the fandom consensus concerning lucius's survival seems to be "he survived by finding the secret entrance to one of Stede's secret rooms and lives in the walls now" 😭
Watching y’all’s reaction at the ending reminded me of the pain I felt 😭 season 2 needs to be here yesterday
First, Lucius survived by clinging to his wooden finger. End of story. (Or possibly rescued by a pod of very handsome mermen...)
Second, Season 2 really needs to focus on Ed getting his shit together. Notice how he instantly mirrors whoever he's with at the time - Calico Jack, Izzy, even Stede. He needs to build his own personality so solidly that it can't fall apart like a house of cards at *one freaking sentence* by Izzy. Notice that he told Stede in ep9 that he's tired of day-drinking, making guys eat their toes, and beheading turtles - yet when he's around CJ or Izzy he does just that.
Gosh this episode was an emotional roller-coaster. If this doesn't get a season 2 I'll riot.

Stede's (Rhys Darby his real name is - he's in so many great things) wife is played by "Claudia O'Doherty" whose in the tv series "LOVE" and shows up in a few Amy Schumer projects; she's also the female lead in the new Craig Robinson ("The Office") series "Killing It".
But even seeing people like Kristen Johnson from tons of stuff including Swiped and 3rd Rock from the Sun wearing an eye patch is quite entertaining.
*sigh* welcome to the wait for season 2. I don't think Lucius is dead-dead, got my fingers crossed he got rescued by mermaids or a ship of lesbian pirates!

I wish it was just one year, but our waiting is almost over.
I know a lot of people are worried about a season 2, and while I'm confused as to why HBOmax has been dragging their heels like this, I think season 2 is guaranteed. I have heard that while they didn't announce a renewal during their May 18th presentation, they DID show images of the show during it. Considering it's an event for advertisers specifically, it just doesn't make sense to specifically highlight a series they aren't planning on continuing to people they want to work with.
Love wins, but at what cost? 😰
