Hi everyone, I'm Sophie, also known as BirdNerdSophie, and I make educational and entertaining parrot care content! I've been working professionally with animals since 2009 across different jobs including working as a zoo keeper, animal trainer, zoo presenter, animal care lecturer and farmer! My girl loves popcorn as a shredding toy. I string some and hang it up. She spends an hour chewing it off.

One really simple toy that my budgies absolutely love is just the mini easter basket. You can find them at my safe bird store. While it is just one toy part, my birds are very beginner level when it comes to foraging, so this is challenging and mentally stimulating for them. I just hang the basket by its handle on a perch and put some treats in there. My birds get really excited to find the treats, and have to figure out how to balance on the basket/hang upside down from the perch to get to the treats. It's adorable when they sit on the edge of the basket! For more advanced foragers, you could put some crinkle paper or other toy parts on top of the treats too.

I also make DIY toys for my birds by recycling old toy parts and buying toy parts. My cockatiels love those vine stars and lanterns! I didn’t think to put treats inside the lantern but that’s a good idea. Also I’m not sure if they sell them in the UK but the brand Vitakraft makes mini popcorn cobs for birds. I pop them and gives them to my birds as foraging toys. They like picking all the corn off the cob. I also just ordered a toy from Bonka Bird that includes a red striped box like that and it has “candy” in it. I figured it would be a good box to recycle so when they finish the candy I was going to put some yellow strips of paper in to make it look like French fries but I like your popcorn idea too. My birds enjoy the mini cobs so as long as they aren’t afraid of the box I’m sure they’d like it.
Yes! I’ve had those popcorn cobs before and the birds liked them! But I just pop a small bath of organic corn for them now!

the greatest thing ever bought my birds is paper straws as soon as i saw papers straws at the dollar tree i decided to give it a try and my cockatiels went crazy with them i have never seen them destroy something so fast.
The paper straws are the best ever!
Weird question, but I found some seashells that I collected and I’m wondering if I clean them properly if it would be safe for a Conure to play with and chew on
I wouldn’t recommend them as they’ll be very sharp if chewed on!
Hiw do you pick your color-dyed materials? I think food color tint food grade is usually safe, is it true or not quite ? How do you know what is safe and what is to be considered carefully or avoided
I usually go for things sold by trusted bird stores, things intended for use with food as long as there’s no plastic coating, or children’s craft materials 😊
How would you make paper-mâché for bird toys 🤩😱🤯
You can do a mix of flour and water plus the paper 😊
