  • Terri Ann has been diagnosed with lung cancer three times. With her first diagnosis, she had no symptoms and it was only discovered when she went to the emergency room due to feeling pressure in her chest.
Since her first diagnosis, six of her family members have also been diagnosed with lung cancer.
In this conversation, she shares how she's processed being diagnosed three times, being part of a clinical trial and how she's been able to catch each diagnosis early. She also shares how her survivorship has made her a fierce lung cancer advocate.

In 1988 at age 42 I was diagnosed with lung cancer also the tumor was in the lower right lobe. After a few days or a week of testing to look for spread outside the lung I was told the only option was surgery and removal of nearby lymph nodes for pathology. This is 1988 so the medical tech was still not what it is today. Imagine waiting for a routine x-ray to be developed and CT Scan of chest taking about an hour. They perform a total radical pneumonectomy of my right lung and they speculated that there is likely cancer, unseen, that had gone up the "major fissure" and another cancer would more likely than not appear somewhere else if they left mid and upper lobes in. There was no endoscopic lung surgery then. So no chemo and no radiation but surveillance for all these years and it is now 35 years later I did not have a recurrence of lung cancer.

I was advised by my family doctor to have a lung screening done due to my age and history of smoking. I was diagnosed with a cancerous nodule in my lower right lung. I had a lower lobectomy and the lymph nodes were removed in my right lung. The surgery was successful with no cancer found in the lymph nodes. My surgery was in April 2023. I am on the mend and so grateful that this was found in an early stage.

I am a 12 year survivor of small cell lung cancer. Lobectomy and chemo. I asked my oncologist if he, or his close associates, had ever heard of a patient being cured of small cell and he said”No, but why not you?”. That’s how I think, why not me? It’s a hard journey. I wish I could say I am able to do what I use to do but I went from being a great athlete to staying at home 99% of the time. Lots of medical stuff since then, like pulmonary embolism and much more. Life is hard. God Bless to all who have or had lung cancer. PS…I had a thoracotomy very painful and a long recovery. Ask for VATS, my surgeon was very experienced and had a great reputation but he was too old to learn robotics

Thanks so much for sharing, this is great information for all of us. As you know, lung cancer is the number one cancer killer for all Americans, both male and female. And more young people who are non-smokers are coming down with it, especially young women. People who have a 20-year history of smoking, are at the highest risk. They should sign up for PET screenings, which are now covered by insurance.

THE IMMUNOTHERAPY IS ATTACKING MY ADRENAL GLANDS IN MY UPPER KIDNEYS.
