@@Synthentic The fact that the descriptor was "so well known, that's been around almost at long as the game, and so infamous". For optifine to be a contender it would have to be all 3. Also, it has no download count. It'd have to have above 115 to 116 million downloads, since IIRC JEI is the most downloaded mod on curse forge. Anyone that plays with even a single mod that adds an item uses JEI. JEI was semi-added to vanilla MC. I'd say that pistons would even be considered more famous since it was added to vanilla as well.

It's honestly insane how such a simple hack could cause so much chaos, I remember a while ago when I first picked up modding I tried to make an x-ray mod and was surprised how easy it was to make.

If chests were able to be hidden from xrayers, the state of multiplayer would improve tremendously. Imagine being able to hide a stash a few blocks away from spawn!

Well theres a method people use on 2b2t,lava,hide a chest inside lava, but what 2b2t does is smarter than that, because chestesp can obviously see through lava, so 2b2t players use item frames inside lava so xray cant see it and they arent chests so chestesp wont work

I tried to use the original xray mod but I quickly realized that it would make me lose all interest in my survival world, the same way that cheating any single item instantly made me lose interest.

X-rays just kinda riuined survival servers for me. I remember back a few years ago i built like a small base at y=5 and one day i logged in as some x-ray kid was looting my base

I actually used X-ray the other day because I was low on diamonds- I was swiftly reprimanded by my friends for cheating :') In any case, I won't be using it again, except maybe for challenges or treasure hunts.
Learn how to find diamonds with clay patches, its the new meta ;)

I seen that X-ray takes a lot of time from staff because I seen videos of staff in large servers and seeing them finding a ton of ore X-ray players without any problem so you should get a plugin to prevent finding ores
use the paper anti xray instead of a plugin

You know, there are legitimate uses for X-ray. For example, building tunnels for a subway network. Granted you can also use coordinates but it's a lot easier to just be able to see where you're going.
Also when constructing a mob farm in a mountain and such with elevators

The appeal for the basic X-Ray texturepack is high, since it doesn't require any knowledge to install, you don't even need to close the game, and the risk of getting banned is minimal. Anyone could even make x-ray texturepack themselves, since its basically just making the block texture empty (or only the outline visible)
so i would be certain X-Ray (texturepack) is the most used cheat in minecraft.
And experienced minecraft moderators are capable of identifying whether or not X-Ray is used (regardless of is it Mod or Resource Pack), making quick work of these cheaters. There's a reason why people caught on cheating are permanently banned without right to appeal.

Ah, X-Ray. That mod was definitely a problem for SMP servers though thankfully I never ran into that issue on the server I played on back in 2012-2014.
I was aware that people used it to find diamonds easily. But I didn’t know people actually used it for nefarious things like that though.
I tried it once, it did what it says it does, allows you see things like ores through blocks which is pretty overpowered. I never used it again afterward though cause I thought it was cheap, didn’t know they had a resource pack version though. That’s insane.

To be fair, I imagine some of those downloads also include those who just use it as a utility. For example, the other day I was trying to figure out whether or not the two spawners I found were both active in a particular spot and so I went and downloaded the xray resource pack knowing it would at least allow me to find that out with relative ease. It's not something I would ever use though for mining, as that pretty much defeats the purpose of playing. Plus, you can just get whatever you want through building farms, which is way more enjoyable to me. But as a quick utility, it's fantastic.
I used X-Ray for the first time the other day on my single player world to see what the most common coordinates were for each ore in 1.18. I know that Mojang put out a diagram, but I was finding diamonds at Y=-49 more often then at Y=-59. I was pretty amazed to see that Iron spawns prolifically at Y=-12, coal spawns extremely high, and there appears to be a relatively even distribution of diamonds from Y=-10 to Y=-52, contradicting the funneled rate of ore generation that Mojang claims. I did this over 10 different worlds and got the same results. Since I started mining at Y=-47, I've found WAY more diamonds.
Nevertheless, I would never use X-Ray to further my world, or in a multiplayer setting. It literally takes the fun out of it. I've personally never understood cheating, especially in multiplayer. Even if you win or achieve your objective, you don't feel nearly as accomplished as when you do it the right way. Perhaps that's just me though.
XisumaVoid did a full analysis of Minecraft's ore generation in comparison to Mojang's chart, and found that the ore distribution chart they provided us is actually accurate, contrary to your findings. Granted, it sounds like all you did was use Xray to visually inspect the ores, not actually count them, and account for terrain generation. Whereas Xisuma used a tool to actually tally up all the ores in the world.

The srvr i play on has a very interesting plugin. Al blocks under the visible ones are replaced by ores, so you cant use xray. Once those blocks are mined, they get replaced with the ones that were suposed to be. First time ive seen an anti-xray plugin.
If I thought someone was looking for chests like that I'd set up a tnt trap.
One time I was caught using xray and the admin not only drowned me in lava, he fucking obliterated the little town me and my (innocent) friends had. He didn't ban any of us, he just made us suffer, and that all was because I used xray.
Well, I don’t know what you did with it, but it *was* a plug-in created by asshats with the sole purpose of *causing other people grief,* so…it’s not like there’s anything no really positive about this mod on a survival server. It’s entirely unnecessary for gameplay unless you want to be a cheat >.>
I would say that that is what you get, but your friends shouldn’t have been brought into this. They frankly should’ve just bed-trapped you and left it at that

Fun fact about X-Ray: I played on a Minecraft prison server and one person had a chest hunt on their plot, so I went over, looked around for a bit and luckily dug up a chest that was in dirt. There were probably about 10 people also searching the plot, so it wasn’t too surprising that at least one person found the chest. However, the guy who owned the plot was a moderator and I got “banned for X-ray”. It still is slightly frustrating because I genuinely enjoyed that server.
When you used the Rezero music at the end of the video It took me back to when I first watched it, wasn’t ready for that lol

I remember back in the day you could x-ray using glitches in the game. (pushing a specific block in the player's face) I never used Xray until recently because how OP it is, but only for lag debugging on the server I play. Funny enough I just used the Xray Ultimate texture pack, which was showcased as the most downloaded.
The old glowstone x-ray trick was so cool back then
Honestly I was probably most at shock and interested in the code textures.. I have been ripping halo apart for many years just as you guys do and I have never seen or heard of that code being anywhere else besides the sand trap egg.... I’m blown away. Thank you!
The ultimate anti x-ray plugin would be one that checks to see if a block should be visible or maybe behind another block or two before letting the client knows it exists. This would probably take some really beefy server hardware to do correctly since it would basically be ray tracing, but I also imagine that it would improve network performance by reducing bandwidth usage because only a fraction as many blocks would need to be loaded in by each client.
I actually found an x-ray texture pack that when you mine with it, it is equal in efficiency to strip mining. (no joke, actually found one that is like this)

I was using x-ray for like a month. I didnt get caught by anyone but it felt so bad to do so. Thats why i stopped using it and now i again can feel the true joy of finding diamonds the legit way!

Damn. I use xray in my single player worlds sometimes because I only have so much time to mine, and when I can't find diamonds after two hours, it's just efficient. But ruining other people's fun? It's just sad.

One server I played on in the late beta days had a plugin that notified the admins every time a player found high value ores so if someone was finding them suspiciously quickly all the admins had to do was turn invisible and watch them to see if they were digging legitimately

It has other uses too. I use it for mob proofing when building underground so I don't have to deal with zombie noises around my base.
im currently working on a RPG server that's soon open for public, and most of the better resources are not X-Ray-able, because most of them are obtained via fighting custom mobs, like earth elementals that have the ores on their model
I used to be a server moderator for the server called VanillaVerse, and our way of countering it was by giving moderators a notification in chat every time someone uncovered a naturally-occurring vein of diamonds. Xrayers who used it to find chests would often let their guard down and use it for diamonds, and seeing the same person find 20 veins of diamonds in 10 minutes would be great evidence to perma-ban them with.
Since lava combat was banned on the server, those who did so were often countered by a similar notification that would tell the moderators every time a lava bucket was placed EXCEPT when within 2 blocks of another lava source block (to prevent lava moat construction from spamming our feeds)
I do remember these days. My base was always raided every time I came home from school. Even when I ventured really far away they still found it. Good times
A way to deal with seeing players and chest could be to whenever someone looks at a chest or player check the player has clear line of sight to the player. Then check if the distance to the player would allow them to see their nameplate unless they are sneaking. If these conditions are met you could set a max timer of maybe 3 seconds or something so if they look at chests or players they shouldn't be able to see for at least 3 seconds do some kind of administrative action on them. Maybe teleport them away and kick them. You could also count how many times a player looks at specific unseeable players or chests and once a certain number is reached punish them in some way.
I've never used xraying, but I can see the appeal to convenience. Although, nothing can replace the thrill of finally scraping against ancient debris in the nether...
I was a factions player for a long time, we used to use dispensers in our vaults. Still 9 slots of storage, but lazy xrayers and default chest esp don't find it.
Back in 2012, during one of my first times playing in a server, I remember having some connection issues while I was digging, and I saw all these ores and obsidian all around me and I thought I was really lucky to have found that - then I got disconnected.
It wasn't until many years later that I learned that I was seeing the fake blocks from the anti-xray plugin because of the connection issues.

I play in a server in which each player has their own little world that they can tp to, and then tp back to the server's main city. The personal worlds are blocked for public unless the owner allows it, so there's no way someone could grief you, even with x-ray.

There are some mods I ran into over the years that when combined for some reason become a sort of x-ray mod. I can't seem to remember which they were though. It works sort of like the old way of peaking through the cracks of a certain block then you can see every ore, however in my case if you were simply underground the ores seem to appear just by passing through a door or by backing up or leaning against a block. I haven't been updating the mods lately and I have become unable to experience the x-ray effect lately, and I still can't eliminate the few mods that are likely to trigger it.
I mean sometimes I'll take it for a spin but only on single player worlds, just because getting a bunch of diamonds is euphoric
We always have problems on our friend servers where we argue with each other because we think that someone is using xray

as a server owner during 2013-15ish that plugin was hit or miss most of the time. It didn't seem to want to work on a server running craftbukkit.
