  • 160 years ago today, the Army of the Potomac enters the malaria-infested swamp of the Chickahominy River. McClellan's engineering background will be put to the test as he orders the construction of multiple bridges across the river. This is the last natural obstacle between McClellan and his prize--the Confederate capital of Richmond. Today we're visiting the site of the so-called "Grapevine Bridge."
Today's video is part of an ongoing "On to Richmond" series, where we follow the progress of George McClellan's campaign up the Virginia peninsula to the gates of Richmond, 160 years later. Join us May 31st for a tabletop wargame and the conclusion to this real-time video series. Subscribe to Little Wars TV to never miss a video!

Whoever thought of turning a campaign into an onling day by day series is a genius and deserves a raise. WHat? You're all volunteers and work for free? Then he deserves a rootbeer.

Hi guys. I have loving the series. As a native Minnesotan I feel obliged to mention that 2 Grapevine bridges were built by troops of Sumner’s corp, one by the 5th New Hampshire and the other by the 1st Minnesota. The first of the two washed out a couple days after completion but the second one stayed up and was used in the river crossings a few days later. Stephens Sears mentions the two regiments building the bridges together because both were filled with lumberjacks. The 1st Minnesota was known in the Peninsula for how fast they could put down corduroy roads.

As a local, I can confirm that it is swamp; very much swamp.
Also, on an unrelated note, the approach the Union came from was already being fortified by Robert E. Lee as the plateau that the Union would be marching through was one of the few open approaches to Richmond.

Malaria-ridden swamps? Well, one quick google search later and I learned that malaria was once endemic in the US, but that it was effectively eradicated in 1951. Learning all kinds of things today!

Appreciate that, Mark. We had a great time touring around the battlefield sites as a club. Editing 20+ videos for this was a big lift for us, but we still think it's a neat way to track the campaign!

Drewry’s Bluff is a superb location to visit, and while perhaps not on everyone’s radar it is very rewarding. Other excellent locations are Yorktown, Malvern Hill, Gaines Mill and don’t forget the White House of the Confederacy and the Museum of the Confederacy. I won’t mention the 1864 Campaign…

We did stop at both Yorktown and Gaines Mill (filmed a full tour of the former). There's just so much to see down in that region. Easily enough for us to take a couple more trips and barely scratch the surface. Would love to go to Petersburg next time!

Add Cold Harbor and Chimborazo hospital; the largest and most successful medical facility of it's time. Do not visit Monument avenue as it will sicken the visitor to see the utter disrespect visited on the various statues (most are removed but the plinths are covered in spray paint). Bedford Forrest actually made a bridge using grapevines to help his army escape pursuit.
