  • Frieren: At Journey’s End (Sousou No Frieren) is a manga (soon to be anime) that tells the story of a millennium old elf traveling the world with Fern the Mage and Stark the Warrior to better understand humans. It’s a manga that I have found to be like nothing I have ever read before, I hope that you will give it a shot.

Somehow, the alcoholic priest lived to around 100 years. That guy was just built different.

Well, after episode 10, I'm now tentatively giving it "best anime of the last ten years". I hope it sticks the landing.

Excellent review! Having read all the available English language manga on Frieren, I can substantiate that this is not your typical Shonen. The story is fascinating, but does have very long stretches of what can only be described as Slice of Life. In fact, Frieren is much more an SoL than a Demon Slayer so for those who only can exist in endless combat sequences, Frieren may turn out to be a tough sell. But if characters are your joy in a story, Frieren is rich in complex, and interesting characters and their changes. The most fascinating one is Fern and Stark, and the most touching and human it is. I am beyond excited for September 29, the two hour intro.

Idk man, the exams were a highlight for me in my first read-through because blew the world open (in that way that Frieren enjoys, because all the different mages and their magics are exciting to think about), and I also fondly remember the tension I felt the first time I read about the demons in the Granat territories (especially Stark and Granat's conversation before Lügner arrives). Now that we're out on the other end of the anime there have been so many anime-onlies asking why the manga readers were so down on the longer arcs lol. Nowadays people have moved on to saying the Golden Land arc was dragging as well, but that just means people really like the single chapter stories, I guess. Or maybe they just don't like the wait between chapters.

Frieren is flat but have the knowledge of 1000 of years, a milf of experience! Her journey with Fern and Stark shows how she's more of a mentor than a protagonist.
