The Unknown Man Who Totally Screwed Germany

  • Senior Lieutenant Dmitry Lavrinenko didn’t have a moment to lose. It was November 18, 1941, and the Soviet tank ace had just received word the Germans were quickly surrounding them. A sizable panzer column was bringing up the rear. Hitler’s Wehrmacht was rapidly advancing on Moscow, and every decision would count if the Red Army were to have any hope of defending their capital.
Only one thing could work: a surprise ambush on the enemy. Lavrinenko had already used the strategy several times in previous battles to devastating effect. But as he cautiously maneuvered his T-34 to intercept the German tank column en route to the captured village of Shishkin, he soon realized that he would have his work cut out for him this time. The barren highway was completely devoid of any natural cover. He would have to pray his tank’s white paint would save him from detection against the bleak, snowy landscape.
Lavrinenko and his crew waited in nervous anticipation. Soon enough, the first German tanks began to roll into view, an imposing procession of daunting steel monsters. Lavrinenko counted them as they appeared. There were eighteen of their tanks against just his one. The odds were stacked heavily against him, but there was no time to dwell on the disparities. With the first panzer in the T-34’s sights, it was time for the battle to commence…

In 1941 the t-34 didn’t face Tigers or Panthers. It faced Panzer 1s, 2s,3s and 4s with the most deadly the Panzer 3 with a 50 mm gun and without slopped armour was no match for a t-34.

@CliffE-th8vs Not according to the Russian field study conducted by.
Central Scientific Research Institute No.48 (ЦНИИ 48),
Out of the full sample of 178 tanks, we subtract out 24 tanks disabled purely through mechanical failure - this leaves 154 tanks that had some sort of armor penetration damage, with a total number of projectile impacts at 534, subdivided as:
      · 432 (81%) projectile impacts (penetrations & bounces) on the hulls
      · 102 (19%) projectile impacts on the turrets
The 534 projectile impacts are further subdivided into:
      · 289 (54%) impacts that did not result in internal damage to the tank and crew
      · 245 (46%) impacts that resulted in internal damage.
There's a chart that shows 54.3% of the hits were from 50mm. 23.7% of those rounds penetrated the tank. Even 1.2 % of 20mm penetrated the armor.
So no you are repeating a myth.

An example of why this is a moot point: If you have 1,000 tanks, and the enemy has 10,000 tanks, you lose. It doesn not matter how good your tanks are built and how good the crews are or even how proficient the command is on the battlefield: you would be overwhelmed and eventually knocked out.
This is the only reason the Soviets "won" at all. They just have the sheer numbers. Other than that they may have had the technical advantage for a short window of time here and there which was effective at slowing Barbarossa, but to say that their tanks were some godlike war machines is ridiculous and is known propaganda.

The Sherman became a Great tank after it adopted one-piece front armor. It was faster than the Panzer, twice as fast turret rotation, and "fuel efficient" in comparison. It's kill to loss ratio was 4 or 5 to one, if I remember correctly. The newest Sherman's also had a wet munition storage to combat against cook-off after a hit. Very nice tank and long legs. She served until the 2000s in some countries.
