this exactly. I’m autistic & as a child I used to have pretty long hair but I used to hate brushing it because of how much it hurt me. In my older years (think tween) when the tangle teaser came out, it was really nice. I now have very short hair that doesn’t need brushing except for finger comb every so often, I don’t need to use it. But it definitely helped me a lot when I did have longer hair & recommend it to people with long hair.
Exactly, my mom used to always start at the root and fight through with extra stiff brushes and it was always so migraine inducingly painful and would create an even bigger mess of knots. All that stopped once I finally learned to take care of it myself and my poor scalp finally had a rest. Taking care of your hair shouldn't be painful, it'll take time but you can even get through some of the toughest mats with a relatively gentle hand.
It’s absolutely the thing that makes most sense on every type of hair- unless someone out there has magically perfect, tangle-free hair that stays that way even in wind or a hard sleep (and that would be a bit annoying). You’re not a matchmaker for knots- there’s no reason to comb them into each other unless you’re trying to make a knot squad (a rat king, if you will; like Dennis described on 30Rock sounds amazing until you’ve had one on top of your own head- the fun stops there).
autistic woman here. I use that too, hair can be such nightmare for us at time cause they're so demanding. btw I wanted to high five the nd people, best wish for your girl
Same here, I sorely wish we had them as a kid. My Mum and sister got sick of styling my hair for me early because of a few times I was really uncomfortable with having my hair/forehead raked with a metal/plastic brush for special ocassion styles, I learned how to style my own hair pretty young so I could keep it long, and still stuck to mostly braids so I'd have to avoid detangling with the brushes we had.
If you have 4C hair, the bristles on the Tangle Teezer may not be long or strong enough to detangle your hair thoroughly. You also need to consider ergonomic design because our hair takes longer to detangle. Try the Felicia Leatherwood brush or the Thique Curl Detangler Brush that’s made to work with your hair. I have both the TT and FL brush and I’d pick my FL any day but the TT definitely beats a regular comb hands down.
And they’re so easy to clean. I used to have those brushes with small balls at the end of the bristles and my hair would get stuck in them when I try to get it off the brush and all the dirt would collect in them 🙊
I have been using my Tangle Teezer for more than 10 years. My boyfriend has really long and thick hair, he used to have a tangle teezer knockoff because he disliked the old model without the handles. Then when I saw a real one with a handle on sale so I bought it for him. He was amazed how much better it was haha, it's now his favorite hairbrush too.
I convinced my friend to switch from her old brush to a tangle teezer, and though initially she thought it was too soft, now she thinks other brushes are too stiff 🤣 she loves it
I had the same experience as your friend, I was used to wet brushes so it felt wayyyy to soft and it doesn’t do big areas of hair well so it took time to get used to but now it’s how I roll (also the shape… that was maybe the hardest part). Some things take time and patience to get used to and are worth the effort it has really helped my hair (along with other things I do).
I've had my hair in such states where not even Tangle Teezer could save it, thankfully it got better recently. I appreciate it for being pretty much always painless on me, I have a very sensitive scalp and even minor tugging feels like torture on me, I can't use normal brushes anymore.
I also hold onto my hair when I detangle it, so I’m not pulling on it and yep from the bottom up. My teenager self used the take a brush and rake it through top to bottom… I lost a ton of hair that way 😂
I also learned the importance of getting your hair trimmed, even if you are growing it out. I got my hair trimmed because i had lots of dead ends (my last hair cut had been 2 years prior i believe) and my hairdresser was like "you really should come back in like 3 months, 4 at most" and i was just liek "ok i will try" and my grandmother, who used to be a hairdresser in the 60s-70s, told me that wasnt true that you just have to go when you start to see split ends. After 3 months my ends started to knot themselves and seemed dryer and brittle. Not split ends yet, but clearly not healthy. I went back and got a trim (2 inches or so) and my hair is back to being great and tangle free. Get your trims yall.
Can you do a video, please, on the wet brushes? I like them a lot, but i don't quite understand if it's basically the same principle as the tangle teaser.
Tangle teezer has a wet brush. I have 3b curls all the way down to my butt and it’s the best way to detangle the hair. I also use it to style my hair and distribute product.
Tangle teasers don't work on my hair, I think my hair is just too dense. My tangles just shrug off super soft bristles like this even when my tangling is minimal. It's wide tooth combs for me. Works ok on my bf's beard tho
@@youaresociety4035 that is fair, I suppose I could try it next wash day. I generally use a detangling comb in the shower (you know, the ones with the hooks on the end to hang on the rod) while my hair is conditioned, and then again while it's rinsing (and then I comb it again with a regular wide tooth comb when I do my leave ins until smooth, then I leave it alone until dry). I only used a brush before re-treating my waves while dry, but now I just comb.
Maybe you’re doing it wrong. I recommend rinsing your hair on wash day, applying cheap conditioner, and detangling very gently from the ends to the root. It works best to take small sections, after you’re done detangling rinse the conditioner off and shampoo, then apply your good quality conditioner and detangle again.
Yeah I am dependent on home help nursing care for my ADL's and I really need to get me one of these. Because no matter how often I say it, some of the carers just are not careful at all brushing my hair, and I can just hear it snap all the time 😒
I have no idea how well it works with thick or corse hair, but for very fine hair it is freaking fantastic. Particularly bad tangles still take time to work through, but there's such a big difference in damage by the end of the ordeal than with most brushes.
It depends, the denman brush is the worst brush for detangling. But it’s good for styling, however other brushes like the Tangle Teezer wet brush can give you the same styling results. So personally I only use the tangle teezer for the detangling And Styling
Years ago I buy a tangle teezer knockoff from Chinese online shop. Its dirt cheap and works really well with quite good quality 😂. When I want to buy more, I never find the exact same product. Price is higher and poor quality compared to the first brush I buy.
"protects you from yourself" lmao that was the thing I needed for soooo long. I actually had to ask my sister to brush my hair, because she's a lot more delicate than I am and wouldn't damage my hair. 😂 Now that I cut my hair, it went from waist length to a pixie cut, I no longer have tangled issues lol. But I can definitely understand why this product was created and appreciate it. Thanks to whoever made it real 😩
On my hair tangle teaser work well to brush out but it is unable to remove big knots and I always brush from bottom to middle to top. The comb just brushes over the knots.
That's ideal, really, at least for my hair. There's no brushing through big knots, those need fingers to loose up, so best case scenario is not tugging them tighter
I get _very_ nasty knots and tangles in my hair. Using a Tangle Teezer with leave-in conditioner is the only thing that has worked. I highly recommend getting one.
That's why I prefer using a wide-toothed comb. It glides through the hair a lot easier and you can feel a tangle coming on and you can stop yourself from tugging on the hair by holding on to it and pulling the tangle out gently with the comb. Tangles tend to get stuck within a brush which tends to pull on the hair and causes breakage. I don't use a brush on my hair very often.
Used to have very thick hair to my hips. The tangle teaser was fine, but the Wet Brush (som generic version) was an absolute revelation. Also much easier to keep clean.
I have that and its so fkn good!!! I get locks in the back of my head (becaus who needs to brush their hair morning and evening?... me.. I should do that) but now I just crack this baddie out and she makes my hair so smooth again c:
I have curly hair, originally a 3B/3C mix, now it’s a mix from 2B to 3C. It’s waist length (I’m 5’2”) and VERY FULL. I only wash my hair once a week now in the winter because it takes between 8-12hrs to air dry fully and with my job that would mean going out in snowy weather with wet hair (not a good mix), I can’t use a dryer because even if I don’t care about fizz (my hair will be in a bun anyways) my eczema reacts really badly to it. All this to say the tangles are UNREAL. Full on matts. Now I use a detangling/leave in conditioner catered towards 4C hair, a good hair mask and detangling brush. On and lots of patience and arm pain. It can take me up to 30mins-1hr to detangle without breaking my hair. I go by sections (usually let the hair decide where it wants to separate) and work from the ends to roots. I noticed most of the hair that comes out (and it’s a scary amount) still has the white root attached! Maybe the products aren’t for your specific hair type but desperate situations require desperate measures and after my mom’s black friend with a beautiful 4C afro told her her secrets I went on a full deep dive of black youtubers that teach how to take care of curls, matts and tangles. Oh and the products smell AMAZING, since I only wash my hair once a week, spending 20$ a month on products is nothing compared to the 50+ and bald spots I had before.
I have rather thin and very straight hair, so I just use a comb. I've been using the same comb for about 10 years now and my hair is healthy and smooth
I have also very fine and straight hair and cannot use combs. Brushes are the best for me. Combs are either too wide toothed and don't get the knots our, or they make my hair static. It's interesting that you don't have any of these problems.
Beautifully said, thankyou fornthis info!! I'm a long time long hair haver, and I go in with a soft bristle brush from the bottom up, holding the hair a bit above where I'm brushing it to keep it from pulling at the scalp. Then once it's all detangled, a firmer bristle styling brush to get it all sleek and tidy, and get all the way through the thickness. I found I need both brushes for tidiest/most detangled results, and only in this order.
I used to like and used them, but for some reason I don't enjoy the plastic feeling and also they made my hair quite electro static:D I don't really have a lot of knots with my hair so prefer natural brush options
Some brands seem to make them more bendy than others, I've had that issue with some brands too. But once I found one right for me it's been the best brush I've ever had!
My hair is really easy to tangle in itself (like 5 minutes after brushing) and those kind of brushes never get trough my hair, they just kind of ‘sit on top of it’ you could say maybe? Like it doesn’t even get to the middle because I have a lot of hair. All my friends keep saying to use something like this and I’ve tried multiple times but it never works out so yeah
I should get this one time I was brushing my hair out bc I hadn't in way too long and a decently large knot got ripped out of my hair along with a lock of normal healthy hair
I love my tangle teezer, though I do need to buy a new one now as mine is almost 7 years old now 😂 I do however use a Wet Brush that also has soft bristles when I brush my hair while blowdrying it, and sometimes also when I'm just brushing my hair through
My grandma still asks me why I don't use a "normal" brush, because the detagler one I use quote: "doesn't detangle the knots, it just strokes the hair"😂 In her mind the only way to get rid of knots is to rip through them, and if it doesn't hurt - the brush is shit and isn't working😬
After washing your hair, use an acidic conditioner, which causes the hair to ‚shrink‘ making it smooth, and then comb your hair carefully and thoroughly, then rinse the conditioner out completely from the scalp to the ends. Then comb your hair again, carefully. Use a couple of drops of jojoba oil and work them into the ends as needed. When styling with heat, always use a styling foam which protects your hair from the heat, while providing the styling benefits. And only ever use a brush on completely dry hair! And get yourself some jojoba oil, thank me later (also awesome for skin care, sun bathing (on pre tanned skin) and after sun care. When you step out of the shower, apply a few drops on the wet skin and let it dry with only little to none towel use. Amazing!
i used to get tangles my entire life and finally got a comb that is similar to the tangle teaser (basically a no-name wet brush) several years ago and NEVER got tangles again. I thought maybe I was just getting better at managing my hair so i recently went on a trip and packed a cheap wide toothed comb...NEVER AGAIN....my hair IS better taken care, but it was defs the wet brush preventing me from ripping my hair out while combing it.
if found the dessata brand work really well on me. thankfully I tried that first cause many cheaper similar brush don't work at all for me. though it may be cause it's Spanish and even supemarket Spanish product work super well on my hair while in norhen Italy I can't get anything decent for my wavy/curly hair
I switched to only tangle teezers in the last year because I've snagged too many fairy knots with shitty Conair ball-tipped brushes. They are a *touch* slower to work through my curly Florida swamp tangles but worth it for far fewer snags.
This video reminded me also of scalp stimulation (and my hopes for getting my low density, fine hair to get a little thicker again) What about laser hair growth caps? Do they work? If they did....wouldn't they be FDA approved, not just FDA cleared?
My vitaminD levels are insufficient and I'm noticing that my hair is getting brittle. Could you give some more tips to prevent breakage and care for my hair until it recovers?
I prefer a bor nylon brush for my thick, curly hair. I find it gentle enough that it doesn't rip my hair out, but it can also get through the knots quite easily. I tried a tangle teezer before, but I find it can't properly get through my knots, so I end up having to brush more agressivly, which I don't like at all. Also, the bristles bend over time, so I have to replace them frequently. I'm not saying it is a bad product, I totally see how it can work wonders for some hair types, but for my hair I much better prefer a bor-nylon brush.
my hair is fine/wavy and prone towards those tight, compressed tangles without any help; what can i do to avoid breaking my hair when I want to get them out?
My hair is too fine to tangle but i think i should buy one for my son, who has ridicolously voluminous and long hair.. do they sell this at the drugstore?
this is one of the few products that deserves all the hype it gets.
True, though it's still kind of pricy imo. I've used some pretty good dupes.

I love my tangle teezer, though I do need to buy a new one now as mine is almost 7 years old now 😂 I do however use a Wet Brush that also has soft bristles when I brush my hair while blowdrying it, and sometimes also when I'm just brushing my hair through
Are tangle teezers fine for coily kinky Afro hair?
I remember getting one of these when I was like 10... finally I didn't avoid brushing my hair
I’ve had the same brush since 2016. My only complaint is sometimes it slips out of my hands like a bar of soap lol
the bristles always broke off when i tried these because my hair is so thick
I got a cool ripoff tangle teezer for about 0.5$ while the original is around 15$. Works awesome and my hair doesn't break as much
The real one is better believe me
My grandma still asks me why I don't use a "normal" brush, because the detagler one I use quote: "doesn't detangle the knots, it just strokes the hair"😂
In her mind the only way to get rid of knots is to rip through them, and if it doesn't hurt - the brush is shit and isn't working😬
Amazing!
I don't know where everyone is getting the "acidic hair products make hair shrink" thing from? It's not supported by the scientific evidence...
Is it super similar to the Unbrush??? I just got that one. Kinda wish I saw this first!
i used to get tangles my entire life and finally got a comb that is similar to the tangle teaser (basically a no-name wet brush) several years ago and NEVER got tangles again. I thought maybe I was just getting better at managing my hair so i recently went on a trip and packed a cheap wide toothed comb...NEVER AGAIN....my hair IS better taken care, but it was defs the wet brush preventing me from ripping my hair out while combing it.
I always brushed it from top to bottom🙈
if found the dessata brand work really well on me. thankfully I tried that first cause many cheaper similar brush don't work at all for me.
though it may be cause it's Spanish and even supemarket Spanish product work super well on my hair while in norhen Italy I can't get anything decent for my wavy/curly hair
Hi! I've always wondered why they have long and short bristles?
I switched to only tangle teezers in the last year because I've snagged too many fairy knots with shitty Conair ball-tipped brushes. They are a *touch* slower to work through my curly Florida swamp tangles but worth it for far fewer snags.
This video reminded me also of scalp stimulation (and my hopes for getting my low density, fine hair to get a little thicker again) What about laser hair growth caps? Do they work? If they did....wouldn't they be FDA approved, not just FDA cleared?
My vitaminD levels are insufficient and I'm noticing that my hair is getting brittle. Could you give some more tips to prevent breakage and care for my hair until it recovers?
is it also usually used during shower for textured hair?
It is indeed a fantastic brush. However it flats out my wavy hair and makes it look more frizzy-like
I prefer a bor nylon brush for my thick, curly hair.
My hair is too thick for a tangle teezer no matter how much force I cannot get one through my hair and I've got the thick and curly one too.😕
how do you get rid of the knots and tangles without yanking it like normal brushes?
I don’t know if I am too hasty or what but I can hardly make it go through my hair maybe I need to separate it more as I comb it 😅
My hair hasn’t been tangled since I was a child
my hair is fine/wavy and prone towards those tight, compressed tangles without any help; what can i do to avoid breaking my hair when I want to get them out?
My hair is too fine to tangle but i think i should buy one for my son, who has ridicolously voluminous and long hair.. do they sell this at the drugstore?
They sell them almost everywhere where I live, branded and off branded. Absolutely worth trying it!
@@Soggyboxofrocksss i actually got one for like 5 euro and its been a game changer!
I do need something that protects me from myself 🆘
I recently found out that far too many people don’t start at the ends!!!!
That’s why you start brushing from down to up not up to down
Yes I love my tangle teaser, just remember to clean and wash your hair brush !
Are plastic bristles bad? I'm using the tangle teezer wet detangler.. I love it, but i wonder if it damages the hair
