HOW MUCH MONEY DID IT COST US TO QUICKLY START A HOMESTEAD??? | Homesteading Family

- I've been enjoying answering all of your homesteading questions in this Q&A series. Today I answer the more homesteading for beginners questions from viewers. I've also been asked multiple times what the costs are to start a homestead. I break down the numbers of what I've spent so far to get our "Sudden Homestead" up and running quickly. I share the cost breakdown for putting up our fencing, buying our goats, putting up buildings, buying chickens, turkeys, and more. IT HAS BEEN EXPENSIVE. One thing to remember, we're not going to Disney World this year :). These start-up costs are getting many systems in place quickly for our family that we'll be using for many years to come.
I also answer many more homesteading questions in this video! If you've missed the other homesteading Q&A videos you can watch those here:

I feel like a lot of viewers want you to prove youâre doing it right. I just want to say thank you for making your land functional rather than a lawn!
Right!? Some people dont understand that no one is gonna do it perfect in everyones eyes! People do it how it works for their individual life!
@@we_are_the_wesners drives me crazy and the questioning about the kids homeschooling. She has never let her family or kids down before, why in the heck would she now? Plus I think some folks don't realize how much kids learn working qs a family taking care of animals and food to feed families. Her kids are going to be more well rounded than someone who is graduating from Harvard with a 300,000 college education
I stopped trying to do things like everybody likes a long time ago cos you can't do it lol she's an amazing woman she does everything her way love love that!!
Jamerrill, you'll be on PBS one day teaching people about homesteading.
In my opinion homesteading seems like a more humane way to eat meat. Instead of buying meat from large factory farms that treat animals very poorly you get to raise the animals humanely yourself.
I agree that the animals will live a happy life and then have one bad day. You addressed that touchy subject in a very open and honest way.
skyethebard Go veggie.
"Even just staying married." đ€Ł Amen, sister. đ
You have mentioned several times about finishing unpacking. I look at it this way...your children are only little one time and that time you do not get back. so when you say you all were outside doing things, instead of putting boxes away...your making memories. You don't want your children to remember mom and dad always working, but to remember mom and dad spending time with them. You and your husband are doing a great job! Enjoy your time outside and if you need something in one of those boxes...I"m sure one of those children would love to dig it out if needed. Have a Blessed filled day! you are very appreciated!
Wow your always so on point...I lost my husband years ago after a long illness, at that time we were very much homesteaders with two beautiful young girls... thru many adversities we ended up downsizing and eventually moving off our land. This nasty C-19 has reminded me of our past hopes and dreams. While we haven't lived on the property we still have it...C-19 took my job and many hopes away ...but life being what it is I am receiving a substantial unemployment payment enough in fact that rather then let our property go we are now focused on paying it off and jump-starting our homesteading life again. My heart spills over seeing your many accomplishments. I would like to say while I'm only half way thru this video two things jumped out ..."homesteading requires tenacity" Tenacity Farms is actually going to be our homesteads name and hearing you say by God's grace...that's exactly what it is...my family will be ok beacuse of God's Grace... Please keep up the videos there amazing, and may you and your family be blessed.
Stella Gardner Your story gives me hope! Thank you for sharing.
Stella Gardner you are also an inspiration.
I think $6,000 is a bargain for everything you've done. Great job!
She got a lot for her money. I thought the total would be much higher.
My husband watches you with me at mealtimes and soaks up all you say and nods his head. We are retired seniors with a herd of goats, chickens and 2 donkeys. It was his dream and a constant work in progress. He is also a beekeeper for over 40 yrs. We are thrilled to hear your testimony mentioned on most of your vlogs. You and Travis are true inspirations! 1st comment. I know you get so many. đđșđ
His grace is indeed sufficient. My passion has always been nurturing and educating children. At 61 years of age, physically challenged, I was forced into retirement due to a spinal injury. My husband and I are opening a school in 2021 and I agree, I am depending upon God's grace to give us the wisdom to help these babies. He is already opening unexpected doors for us. You've encouraged and inspired me. Thank you.
I'm 62 and a single parent not by choice but what you're doing is speaking encouragement to me. My youngest who is still at home and I are trying to do a garden when I've got medical challenges and my daughter does as well and yet we're trusting the Lord for what he has shown us ahead. We call our home right now training grounds. We are in recovery mode from a car accident last fall my daughter put in seed they didn't do the best but we we're encouraged when she said just get it in the ground and trust the Lord and see what it grows and that's what we're doing. What doesn't grow we are trusting the Lord to provide.
GrandmaSewHappy Homestead Learning to garden is an ongoing process. What fails this year you know not to do next year. What works out great you learn how to do even better next year. Listen to Jesus to give you tips and have the Holy Spirit lead you because they sure will.
Iâm excited to see your canning days. We had our first meal out of the garden yesterday and it was so delicious! Snap peas cooked with bacon & potatoes and corn on the cob, and onions, cucumbers cut up on the side and I fried pork chops and cornbread. It was so good. Itâs so worth all the Blood, sweat and tears. Nothing better than fresh vegetables from our own garden! đ»đŠđ
Your talk about God's grace really hit home with me. I need to reach out to Him more and let him lead me! P.S. Your shirt is adorable!! Love the colors on you. :-)
It spoke to me as well!
P.o.
Yes, so, so, so true. Thank you for sharing. Your channel has blessed me over the years. May God richly bless you and your family. From North Carolina.
I LOVE her colors & style!!
My grandpa gave me a mallard duck as a kid and our dog sliced its chest open. I put all back in, sewed with needle and thread at 10 yrs old with alot of people letting me know it wouldnt work.I put in a cage with food and water right in front of it and he healed and lived a long lifeâș Was very cool to hear you and your mom did this too. Now 53 yrs and I have chickens, turkeys, ducks, a peacock, many geese and they all live together free ranging together happily with kiddie pools only. đ
You could build a greenhouse and start your heirloom seeds early and transplant next year and do all heirloom seeds. This year grow, grow, grow.
We just finished building our zip tie dome for the meat birds. Iâve seen some folks cover it in greenhouse plastic to make a greenhouse in the winter. That might be what I do! Thank you for your ideas â€ïž
@@JamerrillStewart High tunnels seem like a really great alternative too. (Yes, I've been watching Roots and Refuge!)
@@JamerrillStewart did you make a video on the zip dome? If so I missed it.. I'll try looking thru other posts to see if I can find it. Stay safe..
Just plant and grow whatever you have. It's all food, right? Enjoy the bounty. Then you can do your ideal heirloom garden near year. I truly enjoy your videos and your so very pleasant voice!
I already feel as if we've been sweet friends for years.
Thank you for creating such a lovely Christian program.
I especially appreciate the short little stabs you give when you speak of Our Lord.
So Fondly, mrs.job
What wonderful childhood memories with your mom and now you are giving that to your children! Some of my earliest memories were at a time when we lived in the country and had a big yard and a large garden. Maybe 2 acres. Sitting on the porch waiting for the bus for kindergarten watching the hummingbirds. Happy memories. Thanks for bringing some of them to mind again........also the explanation of Gods grace. Kind of hit home with me the way you explained........
Jamerril is preaching Gods Grace today and I am grateful for it!! I'm planning in "my head" too, when I get a house next year I'll be trying so many great things inspired by this channel đ€đ„°đđ„đ¶đ
Rabbit droppings are gold to the garden and it doesn't have to age!!!
I was doing something new yesterday (I'm 57), and my daughter acted like I had grown a new head when I told her it was new to me. I'm not scared to do new things, either. Do your research, pray about it, and add perseverance and tenacity. That's how you do new things.
When your corn is done, remove the leaves, but leave the stalk. Then tie your stalks into a come shape and grow your tomatoes etc up them.
I love how you handle the tough questions and comments with grace and kindness!
Amen! I love how you are not afraid to talk about God and explained God's grace to everyone. God is good!
I love how you said that you go where you feel Godâs grace. I really needed that advice. Thank you so much
Iâm amazed by what you have and hope to accomplish at your homestead. I appreciate your transparency & honesty. Thank you for being an inspiration !
I love your Godâs Grace â talk â. I so needed this today. Iâm a widowed, homeschooling mom with two graduated and two left. You are such an encouragement to me and many others đđđ€đđđŒđžđžđžđžđž
I didn't just do my laundry listening to you, I did the whole house.
Oh Jamerrill my sweet sister in Christ. The Lord always uses you to remind me that the JOY of the LORD is our STRENGTH. You encourage me and my daughter in the Lord and you are such a blessingđđđ
I absolutely love hearing you talk about your mama! â„ïžâ„ïž I can hear the love and admiration you have for her.
The Homestead is just a wonderful way to raise your children. They will look back on this with fond memories and be grateful for their childhood!!!
Iâm amazed by your energy and simple enjoyment with life!! Well I am a gardener as well, I have nowhere as much land as you. But if I did Iâd be planting just as you are. Gardening is a lot of trial and error and experimenting. Thatâs how we learn, just living and doing and trying and failing and succeeding. You are blessed:)
I love the mantra âif itâs easy Godâs in itâ definitely things can be hard but if the way seems to be opened for you that is Godâs way of showing you
I love it! I love it all! đ€
I think your lengthy explanation about how you plan to give all the animals their best life before the have âone bad dayâ was great. For those people who donât eat meat, itâs all good. You do you and and I do me. I tell my teen daughter, the chicken doesnât get all pretty and boneless at the grocery store just like that. Better the kids know where all their food comes from and how to care for animals and be self sufficient. I am not a homesteader, I am a gardener. I make many things from scratch and try to learn things along the way. So Iâm glad to see you try all the things that I might some day, or that I might not try.
You were also very gracious in sharing the cost of your homesteading start up. Many pop wow might of. It felt comfortable with that. But I do know that Iâm different states the costs would be higher or lower. I live in Southern California and 6k doesnât sound ridiculous at all for all the animals and products that youâve gotten, all the investments and most of all...all the learning your children will gain.
Also loved the garden tour the other day đ
Jamerrill, I just love your videos. You seem so sure of yourself and so adventurous. I think you inspire so many and I think God has given you so much ability. Much needed for this time. Thank you for being so willing to surge ahead with God's grace and leading.
Jamerrill: love your videos. Hope all goes well with the âfarmâ. This is probably the way our ancestors farmed. Moved to an area and brought seeds and some animals with them and that is how they survived. My parents had a subsistence farm. They had a potato field and a vegetable garden. They had cows. Mom even had a flower garden that had plum trees. They also had an apple orchard. Unfortunately, my dad passed away when I was four and my uncle took the cows except one and her calf. I named the calf Fudgy. Then we got a pig (Pinky) and my brothers raised chickens for 4-H and meat. Another uncle came over and butchered the chickens while my mom and aunt defeathered in the boiling water. Such memories. I think we were richer with the subsistence garden than money could buy. That helped us a lot. I love your vlogs and please continue. My mom taught us a lot after dad died but I will leave one story for winter for you. See? I can be suspenseful, too.
Thank you for sharing your journey. I find the homesteading so interesting, but have no plans to do it myself! You and your family are so sweet!
Your really inspired me today with your talk about GRACE! Your pretty awesome!
I'm so glad!
With regard to cost, you're right in that it doesn't save tonnes of money to raise all the meat and milk yourself, but the quality and freshness is so much greater than what you can buy for the same price at the grocery store. To me, that's a huge win!! Plus, as you said, the wonderful experience and growth of doing the work yourself.
so appreciate your long talks on the log! iâve so enjoyed your posting! so jealous of your space and commitment- congratulations on your familyâs amazing journey and thank you for sharing.
So happy to hear you call this your âforever house!â â€ïž
I love your videos and the fact that youâre willing to share so much personal experience and information with your whole process. I know itâs now always easy to share so much, but it is very helpful for people like me who are trying to learn right along with you.
I just love how kind you are. You answer even the silly questions with graceâ„ïž
Jamerril , I have to tell you what happened .. My grandson was watching your video with me and he loved the animals... So a couple days later her cane in here and said, Nana, I said yes, and he said that chicken lady you watch just posted a new video... we had several chuckles about that ...
I love your research and âroll up your sleevesâ attitude, so inspiring! Way to go and I canât wait to see how things go!
Today I visited Sharp Shopper in Waynesboro.
What a nice store. Now I see why you like to go there. Not to far from Roanoke. And not far from the cheese shop in Stuarts Draft. Have a wonderful weekend!
Always sooooo happy to see a video from you!!! Loved the Q and A!!
I like your gardening method. Itâs a lot like my gardening journey. I feel like all my gardening mistakes have taught me so much and I get better each year and find out what works the best. Thanks for sharing your journey. You inspire me. God Bless you and your beautiful family.
Woooee! Itâs a good day when we get a Jamerrill video!! Love this!
Youâre amazing! Amazing grace is on you girl. I enjoy watching you share so openly. Thank you.
Thank you for your time and information Jamerrill! You are a blessing! â€ïžđ»â€ïž
Thank you for putting so much great info out there for us. It's really helpful to know how much you spent on things. Loved what you had to say about grace. I too feel an urge to prepare and do what I can to be more self reliant in the area of provision for our family. I appreciate you taking us along in this learning journey! I love your "just jump in" style, it makes it all seem less daunting!
Love that you homestead :) Watched for years and love the board.
Thank you for the update. You have been a very busy lady. It's exciting to see your place all come together. Take care and stay safe
She is amazing such a memory!! She's unreal God Bless her đđ Love ya girl again big fan of your family I get so excited to hear your bell notification !! Stay safe you and your family.. Lots of love Lisa from Connecticut...
Jamerrill you are one amazing Momma! I think quite often people spend a lot of time thinking about all the things they need to get done in a day. But you get up and get it accomplished by putting one foot in front of the other. You are an inspiration to me. I love that your family all pitches in to make things come together too.
What an adventure your kids will have! As they grow up and have kids, the stories they will tell their kids about the great global pandemic they lived through, and the fun they had in the process!
Your kids donât feel as much the anxiety some kids are feeling because you home school and the farming life they are learning. I pray God blesses & keeps you & Travis & kids safe & sound!!
Thank you for sharing your lives with us!
â„ïžđ€đđ»
I grew up a farm girl too. Iâve been watching your channel for awhile now and while I donât have a large family, your personality, honesty, and faith have kept me a faithful viewer. When you started the homestead I was thrilled as Iâve been thinking of doing this on a smaller scale. Thank you so much for making such wonderful videos. You are an inspiration!
I get so excited when I see an upload from you! đ
Thank you for your videos ... Your are a wonderful role model for your kids. Your husband is very fortunate to have you as a wife..
I have been binge watching/catching up on your videos! Feeling so motivated to keep on learning and trying to garden! My potato plants are getting ready to sprout, learnings lots from you Jamerrill! Thank you for sharing!! đ
I have some seeds that are 15 years old and I still use them... Seeds last forever as long as they're in a controlled environment.. So you could save your heirloom seeds for using next year
I love how you explain God's graceđđđȘđŒđ
Just love you!!! Always watching for next video.
Wonderful video, thank you for answering all those questions, what you are doing is so interesting!
Jamerill,
You are such a great blessing to me.
Hon, Iâm old enough to be your mom, yet you have inspired me so so much, and Iâm so so grateful to you.đ„°
I gardened as a young woman, while our children were growing up, my husband and I have in the last decade as well.
But... this year I just felt so overwhelmed, health wise, etc... but Iâve watched many of your videos, and youâre always so laid back, so confident, and just jump in with both feet. You so inspired me into âjust do it, what can it hurt,â attitude.
Well, weâve just planted again after a LATE frost hit, then weeks of LOTS of rain... I pray everything weâve planted is fruitful and we have a great harvest...
But just in the doing... itâs been a great blessing.
I LOVE your outlook on homesteading,
I feel youâre a very wise lady, please
donât let anyone make you question
yourself. đđđ
Sorry for babbling, just know you are a GREAT BLESSING and source of info,
and I so enjoy your videos.
May God bless you and keep yâall safe and well! đ„°â€ïžđ„° xoxo
Love listening to all your plans, and the sound of the animals in the background!
You are so encouraging to watch, so much information. Thank you for sharing! God bless you!
I love your quote you keep saying throughout your videos.. âchoose your adventureâ. Love it. How true. We can change our direction in life at any moment.
Thank you for updates and answering so many questions đ
You are so welcome!
You are just amazing to me, mama! I love how you choose your adventure and you say it so politely. Your outlook is inspirational! Your "forever home" is an adorable name. Your sweet devotional on God's grace was encouraging and so true! I am SO excited to watch your homestead journey! I loved you to start with and I just love you even more now! I learned quite a bit with this video. We are building our coop and have chickens for the first time because of the current situation, I felt the same way. I would love to move to being self sufficient. It will be much slower than
What you've done but the positive about being behind a step is I get to learn what works for you and what doesn't so I'm really at an advantage! I just love your channel, I watch when I need my soul quieted, and by the way, your bow headbands are just adorable! They are the perfect little homesteader look. I'm going to get me some now! ;) have a sweet and blessed day and know that your genuine self is truly appreciated and admired! đ„đđđđđđđđđ„

Hooray another video!!! You just made my day!!
Love all of your videos, canât wait to see more of your homesteading/large family experience. From Las Vegas đ€
I appreciate how open you were and are through all of this! It really does help others learn on potential possibilities!! Thank You!!
You could eventually be selling produce and animals too.
Such an amazing life you are making for your family!! I look forward to your videos. Iâm 65 y/o and children are grown and I have grandchildren. Watching you gives me joy that there are good people in this world and I admire you and your family. Your kiddos will be amazing adults! đ„°
I love your videos, Jamerrill! You will be fine, We live in Iowa, Iâve had all kinds of ducks ( mallard, call ducks, Indian runner, muscovyâs plus) geese, guinea fowl, chickens, turkeys & peacocks, all free range together. We have no pond, but did dig a kiddie pool into the ground. You do clean them a lot, but itâs just another thing you do to keep everyone happyđ We used heat lamps in the poultry area for Winter, along with heated waters. Everyone was happy. We used to live at a place with a long lane and the goats were free range too, but We have to keep the goats etc in their pastures at our acreage now, unless we are leading them around. There is no better way to raise children! Keep doing what you are doingđ
Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time!
Thanks so much for sharing your adventures and experiences! You inspire me in so many ways, and you never cease to put a smile on my face:) This world could use more Jamerrills! May God continue to bless your journey.â€ïž
Oh my gosh , you are so fabulous! You are such an amazing woman, mother and inspiration. Good for you setting your goals and going for them!
I LOVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! You are amazing, courageous, not afraid to learn and possibly fail. Please never stop vlogging. I want to see where God takes you on this spectacular journey. Btw: I hope another child is on your radar. â€ïž
Your videos have been a blessing tome during shelter in place. I have a garden and chickens, both are producing. I feel like youâre one of friends.
You have given me inspiration to start a small homestead in my backyard.
Iâm loving these videos!! Thank you! More please! đ
Looks like you are on a good start of your homesteading! I look forward to more looks at garden and the animals! I love you are building a pool! A great family activity!
Excellent video. You answered all my questions. Thanks for the help.
I love your vlogs. Thank you for brightening my day !
You are the best. Thank you so much for sharing all your experiences and letting all of us into your life. Happy farming everyone.
So nice of you :)
Thank you for your words about God's grace. I was literally moved to tears and hearing these words really blessed my soul and encouraged me. I have been dealing with taking on a new venture but my insecurities got the best of me. We all need to remember with God all things are possible! â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
I definitely research too much sometimes that it kills the spark of inspiration! Maybe I need to just jump in!
I just really enjoy watching /listening to your videos â€ïž
Keep going!!!! Love, love, love your channel. :)
LOL! You mentioned some ladies doing their laundry during your videos; that's exactly what I do! I got three loads folded and put away today and even had time to grab my lunch and eat it! I love your, "just do it" attitude. Sometimes I get too caught up in the planning. I'm learning to just do it (at 52 years old... better late than never!!). loved the video! Thanks for sharing. :)
I enjoy learning things from you and hearing how things are with your family and homestead. I did order them garden bags and their on the way for me to use. I am glad to hear about Seeds with Generation so I well look into ordering those type of seeds. Listening to you talk about the Goats it reminds me of the days I lived in AZ and had a Nubian goat and I was in 4H at that time.
Jammeral ,i know how hard it is to have a farm ,i also grew up on a farm , its very time consuming and dedicated job, but at the end when everything is in order and done its finally relaxing, i I used to love being with the goats , my son tryed to feed a baby calf at the age of 4 , what i love most u are bringing back yr child hood to yr children , good to see all of yr progress,
You are wonderful! I love that you guys do you and you love the Lord! You guys are so encouraging to so many families!
Great video!.. love all the information, i wish i had half the energy you do.
I live in an apartment so what I tried so far was to grow cherry tomato plants from seeds. It went well, had about 10 or so plants growing and when they all reach about 5-7 inches my cat eats them..>.>
try a mini greenhouse- maybe a clear bin with some holes cut/drilled in for air flow?? until theyre big enough that theyre not as fun to eat :)
đ great job
I have a tremendous amount of respect for someone who can raise animals, give them a good life, and eventually process them for food to feed their family. I think its important for children to learn where meat comes from. It doesn't just magically appear in the grocery store. God Bless!
Love how you name your homes. My kids have done the same! We went from the blue house to the green house!
