- Two passes shown. The first pass, Charlie Andrews of the Knights of Mayhem (yellow feathers in his helm) breaks his lance against Mark Desmond (blue, black & silver caparison) of the New Riders of the Golden Age. The second pass is the first of two double unhorsings by this same pairing of Charlie and Mark during the first day of the mid-faire jousting tournament at Sherwood Forest Faire. i love how unfased the horses are to this. they are like wtf is even going on.
The horses know exactly what is happening. They have been highly trained for this task and are eager to compete with the rider.

I'm fairly sure COVID holds a big part of the blame, unfortunately. Jousting has always been niche in the modern day, and it typically only brought in just enough money to keep things going. With two straight years of COVID lockdowns, Jousting events were hit very hard. Hopefully they'll be making comebacks alongside Renaissance Fairs in the coming years, but the economy hasn't been very kind for anyone. Only time will tell.

Sherwood Forest is a Renaissance Festival in Texas 🤘
We do this in Texas lol some years it takes the title for biggest festival in the country
We build-up a pretty convincing mock-up of a medieval city, with some permanent structures too, like stone walls, two-story inns and taverns, & with thousands of people who come in from out of town to camp out in the forest “outside the city walls”, smoke/eat funny plants & fungi in tents with loved ones and friends, or make new friends drinking spiced mead and eating delicious muttons and pies in the tavern, and many merchants come from far-and-wide to set up workshops, selling homemade / handmade products
some things you’ll see here are glassblowers, armorers, carpenters, blacksmiths, jewelers, leatherworkers, artists, tailors, and even food vendors with unique and exotic dishes to try from the medieval ages around the world
and to top it all off, the grandiose spectacles of the live arena events with contestants rising in the ranks every day
i myself own a suit of armor for buhurt and competition fighting!
there was History Channel's TV Show called Full Metal Jousting
They'll make an Xtreme version of this with chainsaw lances, the horse have long scythe blades on the side like scythed chariots, death metal music is playing while they joust and guns are permitted.

I have been to this fair! So much fun! Although I did not get to see the jousting the rest was super cool and loved the food and crafts!

If the armor is properly designed and fitted to the wearer's body then it's going to protect them better than someone who falls off without armor
The ground is soft and will cushion a harsh fall, but probably still might leave you dazed.

Lances are rubber tipped, the force of the knockdown comes from the speed of the horse. If the lance hit the horse, it would bruise but not penetrate and glance off the flesh. It is unlikely that the horse would ever be hit as your target is massive. I think the biggest danger comes from splintering

As the other guys said. It's very unlikely someone hit the horse, and if he does, it has protection and it wouldn't be a direct hit. Probably the splinters are the most dangerous but nothing a thick clothing can't solve.
I mean horses not only are lovely, but hella expensive, no one wants to hurt the horse. Not even in medieval battles.

I hoped they removed the poles. It's the poles that causes injuries, if you get dismounted and fall on it.

@@archkull right, the horse is even armored at its chest, to prevent hits when someone is dizzy or cant aim right, the horse head is very hard to hit, its narrow in comparison to the upper body of the knights.
