  • Almost 190 road tunnels from Norway. Some of them driven in both directions. Footage is recorded in 2019, but municipality and region (fylke) information is like it is now in 2023. Some road numbers have changed too, and they are marked as they are now.
The intro backgound is from Skjåk municipality on road 63 next to the lake Langvatnet.
Word "tunnel" or definite "tunnelen" are cut away from names in the timestamp list because otherwise it would not fit in this description field.

Many Norwegian tunnels do not meet EU standards of today, as a lot of the long ones were built in the 1980s-2000s, which has now come to bite the authorities in the backside. Upgrading the tunnels to EU standards has been a work in progress for a few years now. Gudvangatunnelen (30:05) is one of the iffier ones to upgrade, as it is on the main artery between the east and Bergen. The road authorities proposed to close the tunnel completely for two years, which caused no end of protests from the locals and people running transport businesses. In the end, they decided that the tunnel will be closed during the night for the duration of the upgrade works.
In the meanwhile, well over a thousand bridges are waiting for critical maintenance, and roads prone to be hit by rockslides keep getting hit by rocks while waiting for the mountainsides to be secured. Tricky country for infrastructure, this. :D

And this is probably the biggest bypass surgery in the world :)

I have driven through that old Skarvbergtunnelen in 2013, and I remember it was very narrow and dark. When buses and trucks met in the tunnel, they weren't very comfortable moments. Unfortunately I don't have those E69 tunnels on dashcam videos.
BTW on our tunnel marathon I found another Skarvbergtunnelen somewhere, but I don't remember the location anymore. It was probably somewhere near the coast somewhere between Ålesund and Bergen.

Your country really has a challenging landscape for building roads. Our challenges are mainly lakes and swamps that need a lot of bypassing or embankments and bridges. There is only one bridge that is over a kilometer in Finland, though. The Raippaluoto bridge near Vaasa. It looks that embankment+shorter bridge is more common way here. Also It looks that cuts are preferred over tunnels. There are a lot of places where I have thought that Norwegians would have drilled a tunnel here, but Finns have made a cut through a rocky hill.
Several years ago a 650m section of highway 1/E18 was fixed about 10km from here. It was built on old lakebed in late 1950s and had sinked over a meter. They built that section again and used 80 kilometers of concrete poles, 8000 cubic meters of concrete and a million kilograms of steel. The new road came about 2m higher and the water doesn't come on the road every spring like before.

Hah!

I have gone through some weird tunnels in Norway, but I have yet to drive the strangest one: Ofredalstunnelen.
The 2200 m long tunnel was opened in 1992, after a rather ... awkward engineering incident. When they were half way through the mountain, it turned out they had been using bad survey map data, and the incline they were digging out the tunnel at was too low. If they had kept on digging at the initial angle, the tunnel would have opened 30-40 meters too low on the Ofredal side. To remedy this, they immediately changed the incline from where they were at. To 15.5 % for the rest of the tunnel. That's a fairly steep kilometer. :D
