    My Mom told me that my Baba, my Ukrainian Grandma ( never met her because she died when my Mom was 13) used to make sauerkraut in a barrel.
    It is used in so many Ukrainian recipes or just eaten fried with kubasa.
    We grew up on sauerkraut. Thanks for the recipe!!

    Yay for fermented foods! I definitely notice an improvement in my health when I munch on them daily. The primary reason I make my own ferments is because the microbes in my environment and my body are the ones doing the 'work' and these are the microbes that will support my wellbeing. Storebought ferments are full of microbes that are foreign to my body. Adopting a whole-foods plants-based lifestyle without flour, sugar, oil, and alcohol has had the greatest impact on my health. Thanks for sharing your sauerkraut technique.

    🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻....☀️Sunny flowers again to You, Raelan!☀️I have already made some changes in my diet during several years being ME-sick. One importantant for me is low-histamine diet among no-koffeine, no-alcohol use and instead using 🍀🌿🇫🇮the leaves we can find in the garden and the wood around 🍀🌿🇫🇮for a hot or cold 🌿🍀plant-drink/plant tea for instance; those drinks can be used as I can understand what you call fasting and so I use them to make quite a long pauses during meals; I think that has also been good for my digestion. I also use different healthy leaves from nature on sandwiches and to meals as well every day 🍀🌿.My diet has already been like low-sugar and that lowing I will continue; also fermenting and what other things - in that way I will continue! 😌

    I recently discovered I have almost zero Bifidobacteria so I want to try to increase them, but its tough to figure out which strains are in which foods. Do you think it's possible to add a probiotic supplement containing them into a ferment to increase their numbers and so tailor it to your gut specifically?

    • @RaelanAgle
      @RaelanAgle  Před 2 lety

      Not that I'm aware of, Tom. But I'm far from an expert on this! Sounds like an intriguing idea.

    • @tomstayte9061
      @tomstayte9061 Před 2 lety

      @@RaelanAgle I did some research and the answer is both yes and no. You can for instance ferment milk using commercial probiotic pills, but it would not strictly be kefir. Apparently most commercial Kefir drinks don't actually use kefir grains due to complications with them multiplying during production and difficulty getting a consistent product. I don't think you can invite extra microbes into the grains as they're a self sustaining colony. As for inoculating sauerkraut, I think it might work so will give it a shot and see what happens!

    Any ideas for how to "hide" it into food so my husband can eat this. He doesn't like the crunch texture, and says the juice is awful. I tried to hide a small bit in a salad and he said the salad tasted weird that night. Looking for ideas for hiding the juice into something.

  • @sergiocamelo650
    @sergiocamelo650 Před 4 lety +1

    Hi Raelan!! What’s your opinion on things like milk kefir and yogurt? I ask because they are probiotics but not vegan. Do you usually avoid them?

    • @RaelanAgle
      @RaelanAgle  Před 4 lety

      Dairy is a tricky one, isn't it? No one seems to be able to agree on it! Personally, I stay away from yoghurt just because I've read that the probiotic count is so low that it's not much help. But I do have kefir from time to time because the probiotic count is much higher and I feel it could do some good for my gut. So yes, I have been having kefir throughout my recovery! Personally I haven't had any problems with it, but I imagine that this is one that everyone will have to access for themselves 😊

    Do I need distilled water or can I use tap water? Also is my salt unrefined if it comes in kind of “rock” form that you have to grind yourself, if that makes sense? I’m a bit nervous about making sauerkraut😭😂Thank you😊

    • @RaelanAgle
      @RaelanAgle  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Katie! People seem to have a lot of different opinions about water. I'm not sure what the right answer is, but personally I drink tap water. Salt is also a confusing one isn't it! I'm not sure about that one.

  • @AGKassem

    Hi Raelan! Its been just over two weeks with my sauerkraut jar. I didnt get much foam, and I forgot to check it the last 2-3 days. I found the top cabbage cover piece to be slightly uncovered by water. I discarded it, and now looking at the remaining sauerkraut it has a slight pungent smell and tasted a tiny bit, tastes salty and sour. No traces of any rotting. I'm not sure if this is good to eat as I havnt tied Sauerkratu before. Any thoughts?

    • @RaelanAgle
      @RaelanAgle  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey! In my experience the foam amount varies and I also have forgotten to check mine for a couple days and found the top cabbage exposed. I also just discard it and still eat the sauerkraut and have had zero issues. Unless I see a big chunk of blue and green fuzzy mold in there I assume it's still good! Best of luck with this and good for you for giving this a go 😀
