@@cookingwithken8528 this section is unlimited you can go back and do it as much as you like even after passing through it once in story mode because the only way to find the right way through the maze is by putting the headphones and turning on this kick-ass song .

That's not entirely true. You can go back, but they play a heavily shortened version of the song and take you right to the end of the maze.

This song becomes even better when you realize that, in-universe, it was written by a couple of senile american vikings huffing magic lake water to see visions of the future. Meaning Ahti didn't just give Jesse an awesome song to listen to but a song that's specifically about her!

@cybernurgle6413 He may have written Jesse Faden/the FBC into existence in his bid to [redacted as fuck]. One hypothesis is that the Oldest House/Oceanview Hotel/Motel directly links to him.
@@20fortheJuice Alan doesn't have the power to create people out of nothing, and especially not something as complex and sprawling as the Bureau and the Oldest House (and besides, they existed since *before* he was even born). He said it himself in AWE: What he does is to nudge, to move existing people by suggestions (there's even a nod to the movie Inception), so as to make them think they acted on their own will. As to why Alan knows about the FBC and Jesse, I think of it like this: As Alan has the power to influence reality, so does reality over his writing. He may be thinking he's coming up with those names and concepts, but what he is really doing is to "intuitively" grab what already exists and use it for his own story. Reality is, unbeknownst to him, giving him the "ideas" for names and places.

Well Ahti is a finnish god (in Mythology) and presumably that's why he's named that.
I still LEGIT believe that the members of The Old Gods of Asgard are Thor and Odin in the Remedy game lore. That one lore entry about them in American Nightmare just gives that impression.

For me the game was easy if tedious and time consuming. The only place I really died was at Hedron because Levitate wouldn't trigger for some reason meaning I kept falling.

@@tejaspadhye It is fun to return a couple months later for a second playthrough. You'll certainly notice a couple things you missed during your first playthrough, and it's surprising how logical some mysterious things are when you know the whole story.

I have this personal theory that awesome music actively makes people better at games. If the track hypes you up enough, you start getting filled with confidence, and muscle memory and reflexes you barely realize you have take over. This puts you in a state of awareness in which you can snap from move to move, target to target, action to reaction - all practically without conscious thought. This song absolutely qualifies as "hype enough"
@@RaisedtoSabbath This therory may hold credence. I was getting my ass thrashed by one of the 'Major Test of Strength' shrines in Breath of the Wild, but when I put on some more fitting boss music, I beat it in that next attempt without getting hit once.
There's definitely some correlation between hype music and good gameplay. People who suck at shooters can go ape in DOOM when the soundtrack picks up, and then go back to being mediocre when the music subsides.

@@RaisedtoSabbath funny thing: That's absolutely true. Music is something that can absolutely help put you in this thing called a "Flow state" which is exactly what you described. It's when your mind shuts down and muscle memory and pure reflex take over. This isn't limited to videogames either. Martial arts, chores, work, any situation where you "Turn off" and somehow perform the task is flow.
So let me get this straight, you put me into a game where I am running through corridors, shooting demons, collecting glowey health power ups, all with a heavy metal soundtrack blasting in the background, and it's NOT Doom?
I so want to see Jesse and Doomguy have a fullblown back to back badasses moment.
Doomguy's music has more chainsaws and less lyrics.
Doom is more violent while Control is flashier. Both are awesome, though.

I was expecting portal levels of tedium in solving the ashtray maze and then - BLAST !
Easily the best part. And aside from the crazy ass difficulty, I loved the game.
I was re-editing the gameplay in my mind by having Jesse practically dance when throwing pieces of the maze upon the Hiss corrupted.
Usually when I play a level, I take it slow, methodical and thorough. Here my push was hard, fast and unrelenting.
Same here, I was bracing tedious grinding and general annoyance but the moment this song kicked off, I was pumped.
Yep, I was fully expecting that too - I was expecting to basically be Lost Woods But Scary/Trippy. I very much shared Jesse's sentiment at the end.
Holy freaking shit, I just realized the song actually adjusts as you play through the maze. It's like it's chopped into samples that get shifted around depending which part of the maze you're in. There's even unique parts in the song that aren't on the "official" version available on streaming services. I know some games have dynamic soundtracks, but this is some next level audio direction. Bravo PotF!
Yeah, that's a bit odd, I honestly prefer it to just to play straight through, at least when I first played it sounded that way.
@@JnEricsonx The interactive version does sound a bit weird once you've heard the studio version, but when you play it, it hits hard nonetheless. Especially when the quiet parts of the song and the solos get longer as you fly through the shifting walls and floors of the maze. It feels like a trippy interactive music video.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance does the same thing, and Devil May Cry has a system similar to that where the music gets vocals once you get into S tier of combat.

i think the reason this song makes you feel invincible in the ashtray maze is because the hiss is a resonance based being and ahti said that they "have poor taste in music" so were using this song as a resonance against the hiss, weakening them and empowering us

I got this game free on Epic. I thought it was just an oversized tech demo for ray tracing. But damn was this something else entirely. First it was weird. Then I realised it is an underrated piece of art.
I kept seeing clips about the refrigerator popping up on Instagram and it intrigued me. So when I saw it was only 8 bucks for Black Friday, I said to myself "Why not?"
Looking back, I would happily pay full AAA retail-game price to relive this experience anew once more. This is "Life is Strange"-quality experience making!

Ahti...the embodiment of Snake God living on the roots of Yggdrisil the tree of life that is in everyplace at all times...in other words Ahti is the Serpent (not in a bad way mind you) and the oldest house is Yggdrisil its in all realities all at once its roots stretching deep into the fabric of the multiverse. The sevice pistol is the embodiment of every legendary relic in history. Thor's Hammer, King Arthur's Sword etc etc. Its current form is the service pistol. The lore behind this game is extremely deep and fascinating.
We can find even more refenrences to norse mythology in there.
I'm pretty sure that the Ocean View is the modern form of the Bifrost. The three coloured rainbow bridge the gods use to travel the worlds.
I also have the suspician that a certain cassete player is the horn of Heimdall. the horn that would be blown when ragnarok begins.

Finnished... Sorry, finished it yesterday and immediately bought DLC's. I had a slow PC for a long time, and now I can play newer games at last. This kind of games are best with pixel-perfect aiming, really, not with control pads.When DLC's are done, I am going to miss hiss.. I mean Oldest house!

This is closer to old POTF than modern POTF. Except for a song here and there they lost me after the first 3 albums. Wish they hadn't abandoned rock, though style doesn't really matter if songcraft would be up to par..
It's kinda like Power Metal in lyrical and musical content. And I hella love it!!

They intentionally make you not expect it by having the music associated with Ahti be VERY different up until that point. I was expecting some calm folksy music that would like lead me through the maze somehow, and then this insanity started up.

@@penyuwan Yup, Alan Wake is still my favorite game by Remedy and one of my fav horror titles. (if it can be called that) It wasn't until Control that I learned these guys were a real band and alter-ego of Poets of the Fall, though. I always assumed Alan Wake was just using a licensed song, not one made for it. So that's cool!
Totally not what I was expecting when Jesse turned on the walkman, but listening to this song while running through the maze had to be one of the most amazing video game experiences I've ever had. The visuals of it, the game play, the way the maze ushered you where you needed to go and actually would block off the hiss? 10/10.
I agree. The best parts of Fallout 4 got close but despite the not-so-great controls of Control, this is the winner this far.

Well, there's strong evidence that they're actual gods, right down to the name. Instead of giving you a boring cryptic prophecy through an oracle, they've modernized themselves and pass on their wisdom through badass metal songs.

This song is nothing short of a masterpiece for people who have played and enjoyed the game. Not just for how it was brilliantly used in the game, but for how well written the lyrics are. I can put this song on and instantly be put back in the mindset I had when playing and relive all those great memories the game gives you.
Very rarely does a song have that kind of emotional connection to something and it instantly makes me happy to listen to.
I have NEVER loved a level from a game more than Ashtray Maze. Perhaps the first level from a game that I love.

Why I love Remedy is because they make whole entire songs that tie into their stories and they're always fire!
This song is such a great hint at how much actual control Jesse has of her actions. If you remember Alan Wake, the Old Gods of Asgard were influencing reality through their songs just like Alan was through his writing. I'm not sure if they are real or were created by Thomas Zane, just like Alan. This song not only contains information about Jesse's past, but also the future. The last verse literally says about her becoming one with Polaris, or Hedron, or whatever that life form is called in reality. So, when was this song written? Is it a new record that Alan directed them to write? Maybe, because he clearly has some control over what happens at FBC in the AWE dlc. Was it written before the events of Alan Wake? If so, how did the band know about future events? I'm guessing they hung out with Ahti, so did he tell them to write it? Maybe, because there is a message in Balance Slays the Demon that "it will happen again, in the town called Ordinary". Did Ahti direct that too? How much of Jesse's life was shaped by Zane, Wake, or OGOA?
Point is, I'm so fucking hyped for Alan Wake 2. Sam Lake and Remedy just never disappoint.

I actually wondered, given that this song by the Old Gods helped Jesse through the maze (just like "The Poet and The Muse" did help Alan Wake) could it be the reason why the FBC studied "My Dark Disquiet" (in the easter egg room), like they guessed the "real" Poets of the Fall ARE the Old Gods from another dimension ? And thus, they thought "My Dark Disquiet" could possibly be another OoP with hidden meaning ?
My wild guess is that everything we see in Alan Wake, Quantum Break and Control was orchestrated by Thomas Zane, in a desperate attempt to get his wife back, which instead caused the world to experience larger and larger deviations from what is physically possible. I wonder if Alan Wake 2 will confirm it...
@@FloydTheWolf Technically, maybe it's a stretch, but "My Dark Disquiet" kinda sounds like the story of control but from Dylan's perspective. I saw a theory float around that Jessie and Dylan were the same person, separated by whatever happened with the projector. So in that idea, Poets of the Fall writting the story from Dylan's perspective and Old Gods of Asgard writing the same story from Jessie's perspective, it's kind of an interesting parallel...

@@ashwilliams8783 No, it doesn't. It says Alan pushed the events of the dlc into happening, yes, but not the events of the rest of the game. The most it's hinted at Alan impacting the rest of the story is that he created the Hiss Incantation from a Dadaist poem.

Random detail from the game lore Jesse was a fan of the Old Gods before the events of the Ordinary AWE, you can find an album sleeve from them in the junkyard area with it's info just mentioning how she fell in love with them when she found her dads records. Only to have a song about her of all things preformed as a gift by that self same band.

Who is apparently a Finnish folk hero, "Saarelainen" ("The Islander"), and oddly enough either is, or is often conflated with, Ahto, the Finnish sea god (pronounced like the typo or misinterpretation or autocorrect you made).

Just finished the part of Control where this plays. What a fucking awesome sequence. Running through a crazy ass level using all your powers killing hiss fools and blowing shit up. Hope Control sells really well, got my Hope's up for a Alan Wake sequel after coming across all the Alan Wake Easter eggs in Control.

I was so distracted in that maze, what with everything else going on in that mission, thinking 'I know that voice'. Pleasant surprise to see this band turn up where I didn't expect.
One of the best examples of the synergy of music and gameplay (after the musical😉). You have already mastered all the character's techniques... and then "Take Control" sounds from your headphones. And a mission that requires you'r fully control begins!!!🤘
I purposefully walked through this entire segment, partly to make it last longer, partly because it made me feel like an old god of Asgard
I did this too, and also used the Grip weapon mode against anything that wasn't one of the heavies or the exploding hiss. There's a certain awesome factor in slowly walking forwards, dropping enemies with a pistol without breaking stride.
The combination of this song and the ashtray maze made this the best videogame segment of 2019. People, vote Control on the Game Awards and make this game win some of those awards very well deserved
Just wanted to drop in and say that, whenever Remedy makes a sequel, I sincerely hope they call on you guys again for another amazing track like this. Aside from playing the game itself like 8 times (at least thrice just to play the Maze again), I've watched a dozen documentaries about the making of Control and I'm always blown away but how much effort you guys put into it along side the devs. So thank you for being you and doing this for us.
Its my personal interpretation that the Cassette player plays the song that best fits whoever holds it. The Sankarin Tango exemplifies Ahti and his endless fight against entropy as the Multiverse's janitor, and it does this through a song that perfectly reflects his culture and background as well.
I was 100% expecting a music based, lost woods style puzzle in the ashtray maze with having to follow the familiar song, but they made the choice to change the song, because its Jesse's tape player now, and Take Control is her song.
They kind of do that in a small segment in Alan Wake 2. Following one of Ahti's songs.

Brought here by Remedy and Control. The Ashtray Maze alone just about makes the game worth full price. Badassery personified.
I really love how the song has so much behind it in universe while also being slick as hell and making the surprise of the "maze" turning into a hectic series of battle arenas.
Most of all I absolutely love the fact that the song is explicitly yelling at you to "take control" in the gameplay sense. It's letting you know in such a unique way that you're in the endgame and your loadout/build should've fully come online.
It's showing you in the coolest way possible "This is the finale! You're the director! You have your full kit now! What're you waiting for? Unleash the beast!" And as soon as you do it feels like you've unlocked something that was right in front of you the whole time, but you were subconsciously blocking yourself off from which fits into the themes of the whole game itself it's uncanny.
The guitar playing in this band is top notch. Well, the whole band is amazing live as well.

I just finished the game... When the riff starts at 05:26 I was flying around, air dodging, ground slaming, shooting, throwing rocks so dang fast it was like I was literally Neo from The Matrix... Besides Alan Wake's stage fight, I don't think I've ever had music elevate a game fight like that... And it's from same dang developer AND band... Craziness...
That was one of the hardest fights in that game one the highest level, it was so bloody good and fun

Until I played the Ashtray Maze, I was convinced Telltale Games had the best audio direction of all time with Tales from the Borderlands, but this one moment from Control outshined the entire Tales game!

Part of the subversion is that Ahti has a distinct song associated with him that he sings throughout the game, so when he gives you the cassette with a completely different genre queued up, it throws you off guard
This mission was legit the best 8 minutes of gaming I've had since I played Halo for the first time.
The degree of lyrical depth in this song is staggering. I just realized the word "fading" recurs in the song and has a double meaning: "fading" is always pronounced as "fadin'" / "Faden"
You are digging in too deep. That's how Marko pronounces the word. Give a listen to "The Sweet Escape".
Yosef Marko uses this type of double-meaning in his lyrics all the time though. In one of the Alan Wake games he even uses ‘Wake’ in a similar way.

That's not a direct reference, but a subtle one. Just like in Balance Slays the Demon, "will I never scratch the depths of this domain", the word "scratch" isn't just a random word. Both POTF and Remedy are full of many subtle hints. And Marko's personal pronouciation isn't to be taken for science, since the guy can pronounce the same word in different ways depending on the song or the day.
Remedy always gave their protagonists meaningful names. Alan Wake == A.Wake, a man who has to get out of a dream. Max Payne, well, it's both about the maximum pain of his past and the one he delivers to his enemies.

never played the game, but starting at 1:52 the song really starts to speak to me. parts of it seem to be about an internal struggle with self-destructive behavior, a struggle to become someone who acts instead of someone who's acted on--to take control. and that's what a lot of therapy is about; getting people to take control and responsibility for their own behavior.

The moments of reverse dialogue in this song that hint towards a puzzle in the AWE expansion is sheer brilliance.
Word can't express how much I love this song. Worked so well in Control, of which I - and I assume lots others - first heard it. But as a track in itself, it's an absolute banger through and through, and I keep going back to it, long after I've put the game to rest.
i do not know why, but when finally I went through the maze and the song started to play..i got some tears while fighting the enemies, i was happy, or excited..all the emotions at once! I've love this kind of surprise in a game :-D
