    Great video. My Hang gliding instructor taught me to always watch your surroundings, water, smoke, trees - you get the idea. They will tell you the wind strength, direction, gusts and wind shadowing from terrain. You could see on your final attempt to get lift from close to the hill, the light bushes were not moving. Pretty good sign that wind strength was gone and lift went with it.
    Your setup is pretty impressive. I look forward to more of these.

    Thanks for posting this Daniel! I grew up along the Wasatch front but moved away 20 years ago.
    Back in the 80s, I used to slope soar from point of the mountain all the time.

    This beeping brings back nice memory of my dad paragliding.
    If my current wing turns out to glide well I will ask him to try to fly two-seated so I can control the plane from the paraglider, since he knows how to find thermals and slope wind this could go on for quite some time

    There is a technique used in gliding that reduces your altitude very quickly. It's call side slipping and it's where you cross the controls so it's the opposite of a coordinated turn. You hold the attitude with a mixture of elevator, aileron and rudder. I've used it before on my Hobbyking ASK-21! It works fantastically well! I'll see if I can find a video on it.

    I'd really like to see footage from slope soaring Mt. Olympus! That would be amazing. I used to live in that area - I can't think of any parks but you might be able to find a place to takeoff/land along Wasatch Boulevard or up in the Olympus Cove neighborhood. It's kinda tough with 215 right there though.

  • @jeffmorris2520

    Well done. Got me interested in the plane (a lot) and all the other gear (to varying degrees). I'm in Wyoming, but just over the border from you (yes, the place in SLC Punk). Really nice West-facing hill starts about 100 yards from my house. Liked your video on the Quanum V2s as well. I've ordered the V2s, Fatshark Base(s?), 5ghz transmitter and receiver. What I lack is a DVR and a long range RC setup like the Dragon Link - as well as 2.4 ghz video transmitter and receiver for when I switch video over from 5 ghz. I'll be watching your videos and others to decide what to get for those. Your videos are well done and low-key (relaxing, even) and hold special interest for me because I live so close and usually have very similar flying conditions.
    Question: Have you found you can use an inch-larger props than the folks at sea level? I've found on my tricopter that I can go from 8x4.5s to 9x4.7s and get the same performance and motor loads as the people using 8x4.5s at lower altitudes. It actually doesn't fully make up for the less dense air, even on paper, as I fly at 6800 ft ground level (11.4 psi average atmospheric pressure compared to 14.65 at sea level). Not going to push it any further as less dense air is also less effective at cooling electrical things like motors and ESCs. I've typed too much. Just meant to say "good job."

  • @bruceme101
    @bruceme101 Před 9 lety

    You commented in the video about "odd sink" in the same place there was lift a few minutes before. You where in a thermal, it moved on and left you in sink. Slopes often kick thermals. The surest indication of a thermal on any sunny day is unusual sink. Push through (nose down) the sink and you should find the lift.

    Hey man, if you go to Esprit Models you'll find top notch gliders for thermaling. I'm poor, going to college on August, so, I can't afford these planes. Yeah, I've never seen a solar powered RC plane on the market yet. Maybe you'll be the first? If that goes well quit school so you can make the big $ on that endeavor. Gosh, I can still hear that ringing noise! Anyways, I liked the video. I did see some hiking trails.

    Is 900mhz good for soaring like this?

    • @elmardus
      @elmardus Před 9 lety

      ***** 900MHz can penetrate objects better than on 1.2. 5.8 is what's pretty useless if you want to fly behind things.
      The only problem with 900mhz is that the antenna's are HUGE, and it's illegal in most of europe.
