Cal-Gary really threw me every time
I don't know why, but people who have never been there call it Cal-Gary. It gets me too.
i was more put off by Gary Sutter
How are you supposed to say it? I'm from Alberta and have heard the city called much worse than that.
I remember not having cable that year and this was a free game they played on the NHL app. Boy was I happy it was one of the few hockey games I was able to watch.
Yea then covid happened they would have faced each other in round one of the playoffs oh well but that goalie fight was epic and the Kass and Tkachuk thing was fun
man o man, this takes me back, i'm so lucky to have grown up when i did, this was my childhood, i got to see the start of the great one and follow his career along with a bunch of other legends, got to be old enough to be part of the seattle music scene during the grunge era, got to be part of the world while it was still analogue and see the birth of the internet and things going digital....very very lucky to be part of the gen i'm from for many many reasons.
So you're 'Merican, but spell analog as "analogue"? ok...
Is this narrator even a hockey fan, much less even from Canada?
Doesn't know who Gary Suter is... unreal
@@andrewborody Probably thinks he's from "Cal-gary".
@@andrewborody I know there were a lot of Sutters but that's embarrassing to not know who Gary Suter is I could have done a better job putting this piece together
95% of all their games??!! I know(and hate) that fighting is on its way out, but im gonna prioritize watching these 2 teams go at it while it lasts!
Anyone that says this is not the best rivalry in the NHL hasn’t watched these teams play each other. No other rivalry beats Edmonton Calgary
Cal-gary? What are the odds the narrator also says Dey-troy-it?
Other than the Kassian/Tkachuk flare up the Battle of Alberta has been a Square Dance for more than a decade....In that time the Oilers were mostly awful and the Flames mostly mediocre.
And now the flames are awful
@@Nic_Garscum still mediocre
@@legendztofar-- No, they're awful. But hey, at least they signed Coleman for way too much lol
@@Nic_Garscum and now we get a playoff series between the two 😉
Why do they say the oil and flames met in the playoffs in 2020? That never happened
I think it he meant by both teams making it in the post season, even with the sham of what the qualifying round was Calgary vs Winnipeg and Edmonton vs Chicago but I agree you are correct they never faced each one another and where both eliminated in the qualifying round.
@@colecadieux9370 they really could have phrased it better.
@@colecadieux9370 Calgary beat Winnipeg in the qualifiers, Calgary got knocked out in the actual playoffs unlike the oilers
They even said “meet in the playoffs”. So they can’t even rely on poor phrasing. Just dead wrong from a Canadian sports network lmao
They were going to be first round match up but covid happened
Gotta love the way he pronounces Cal-Gary, lol, where is this guy from?
From 1984-1990, the Stanley cup lived in Alberta!, Go flames Go ❤️🔥!!
But after 1989 the Flames got put out once again Go Oilers Go
Montreal win in 86
Great piece, thanks for that!
Sportsnet actually aired this plethora of name mispronunciations?? Seriously!?
You don't remember Gary Sutter? He's the least known of all the Sutters because his name is actually Gary Suter.
Including the mispronunciation of Calgary.
Love the battle of Alberta
GO FLAMES GO! 🔥
Flames suck
@@oilers4life780 I hate oilers
@@oilers4life780 so do the oilers.
@@oilers4life780 have fun losing McDavid in 3 years 😂
And the rivalry continues in the comments
A lot of info that didn't need to be there was included and a lot of very relevant info was left out.
Cant wait for the next match up!!!!
A good history lesson for those watching the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Just in case the Oilers & Flames match up in the Western Conference semi-finals.
best rivalry in hockey
Why no mention of Harvey the hound and Craig mctavish ?
Battle of Alberta 2022 let’s goooo
Who’s Gary Sutter?
and here. we. go!
Clearly never been to "Cal-gAry"
I really hate the way he says Calgary
Cahl Garry
"From 1984 to 1989 the Stanley Cup lived in Alberta"...so you just ignore the Montreal Canadiens winning in 1986?
Horrible video.
And Edmonton in 1990
Edmonton Thistles!!!! LMFAO. Love it good to know we had a Thistle team in Edmonton
Still not going to get over the fact that covid robbed up of a likely first round match up last year.
Looking at the pacific division teams stats in 2021 it looks like Edmonton and Calgary would’ve been 2 and 3 again.
The pandemic took away two consecutive battle of alberta playoff rounds
@@ryguy6577 Definitely possible, I think Vegas finishes 1st, Edmonton 2nd, and 3rd atm feels like a toss up between Calgary, Vancouver, and Seattle.
The worst part is that only one of the two made it out of the qualifying round later that summer. With the way the playoffs were set up at that time us fans would have had to wait until the second round before we got a Battle of Alberta in the playoffs. At least the two played against each other in a pre-tournament game.
@@grahamdamberger7130 The play in rounds were honestly such a joke, they should have been set up like how the NBA did them. Instead, teams like Edmonton and Pittsburgh got punished for finishing high in the standings where on the other hand, teams like Chicago and Montreal got rewarded when they were both pretty much out of the playoff race at the time of the pause.
@@Jo__Ko I heard that Chicago was selling guys at the trade deadline in order to bring in more draft picks and prospects, and yet they still find a way to beat us in 4 games, even when we had McDavid, Nurse, Leon, RNH, and Smith in the net.
this is amazing. the battle of alberta and the battle of quebec mtrl vs the nords you need battles rivalries like this esp when they meet in the playoffs. the nhl and bettman is a joke today. so spread out. rule changes uuugghhh... but keep the passion alive.
Me: I guess I could see fighting leave the sport though I don't love the idea
Also Me: DAMN SMITH GET EM GET EM!!!!
The Cup was actually in Alberta from 84 - 1990
“From 1984-1989, the Stanley cup lived in Alberta”
Umm, I think there were a couple times this video forgot the Oilers won it in 1990.
And the Habs won in 86
We will always be a thorn in Edmonton's side Calgary flames for life
Best rivalry in the NHL
@7:18 - huh?? Flames and Oilers didn’t meet in the playoffs in 2020...
They were going to be first round matchups but covid happened but I agree the guy could have worded it differently
@@ryans413 ya but it still never even happened. There were like 4 months in between them "potentially being matchups" to certainly one of them not even making the playoffs (oilers), for them to not believe in that. Idk its not even poor phrasing. Just poor reliance on facts for the sake of a story
Its Calgree ffs.
My uncle and cousin are Edmonton supporters and my dad goes for Calgary and I go for Montreal so I’m in the middle of it all
Shepmates sent me here. ".......FOR THREE DECADES"
Next should ones should be
Toronto vs Montreal
Philly vs Pittsburgh
Ottawa vs Toronto
#BattleOfAlberta
I mean I wouldn’t attend a Calgary Cowboy’s game either - that goalie mask scares the hell out of me
I didn't know it was called Calgary oilers before and now slpit into two teams what's now called Calgary frames and edmonton oilers
Yupp I remember the death valley days....hahaha
liked how it started but forgot the Edmonton Eskimo's and no the football team either. Calgary Bangel's and Calgary firefighters this hockey rivel is over 100 years old granted the gaps but non the less thats the reason for the deep hatred between these 2 clubs
let's go Oilers!
Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruin best rivalry, original 6 teams, enough said
California Gary...Cal-Gary
Oilers didn't play Calgary in the 2020 playoffs lol...
Edmonton didn't play calgary in the 2020 playoffs...
Cal-GA-ry
Gary Sutter
Narrator that knows nothing about the source material "1980 TO 81 season" "Gary Sutter" "CalGARY" "Krushlinsky" "TICKanen". Pretty bad.
Voice-over provided by text-to-speech? What is with the pronunciations?
Lets go oilers going to be an awesome year
If you define awesome as being first in line for Shane Wright in June, I guess that is awesome. Oilers version of awesome anyway.
@@stentorofsparta3576 If I recall Edmonton made playoffs and Calgary was stuck with lucic slowing them down
@@ryans413 yes and Edmonton’s playoff showing was fantastic, wasn’t it.
@@stentorofsparta3576 it's too bad the flames couldn't show anything in the playoffs... But we did see some sweeps from the flames in recent years... Weren't your 2nd in the league ???
@@nos5822 what are you talking about?
The battle of Ontario should be Next
You mean the pillow fight of Ontario, right?
@@Nic_Garscum Hahaha ya that’s true
It has since become the battle of the draft lottery.
Cool material and appreciate the historic depth but come on Sportsnet, do better.
They didn’t meet in 2020. Wtf
Next video battle of Florida pls
Let's go Oilers
Oilers are trash 🗑
@@mr.watts6927 ya Oilers = 🗑
Oilers suck have fun losing McDavid in 3 years
95% jesus
LET'S GO OILERS! It's great to have rivalry as strong as this one in Alberta.
These teams haven't played in the playoffs in 30 years. It's been a pillow fight for decades but still gets trumpeted as a great rivalry.
Stop saying cal-gary ugh im from the states and can tell you thats not even close you almost dont even say the a you litteraly say calgree come on
The cup lived in Alberta from 84 to 90 but visited Montreal in 86 do better professional sports people
