That's the spirit...let's compare a 2023 trim saw with one from the freakin' 50's! Geez! Not to mention this guy SELLS Highland Park equipment! NOTHING wrong with Highland Park equipment, it's very good and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But this comparison is RIDICULOUS!!! I don't know what the HP is made of, steel or aluminum, but the RR is made of aluminum and I use water in mine all the time with no issues. I do make a point of oiling the arbor after each use. C'mon HP, you're better than this!

I don't think a tank that holes a couple cups of water or oil doesn't need to be "beefy". I don't see any true advantages of the beefed-up saw. You can still only cut small stones on either saw.
Your Highland Park is a nice, well built saw but it might be over-built too. The Rock Rascal works very well and is relatively inexpensive and works just fine and without issue..
I've been cutting with an ancient one for years and have had zero issues with it. I don't know how old it is but it is OLD. Mine also has the Full Belt Guard.
But I get it. You have to toot your own horn.

The problem is Higland doesn't offer a combo! Inland had the swaptop and Lorton had Lu6X-130 Combination Machine. For someone starting out the industry has made items to expensive. So people are using alternatives. A lot of use would like to buy one but who has 500 for 1 machine and 1000 for 2 machines. Inland had a great deal for 399 you could cut as well. Tumblers are no fun. There would be a lot more people buying product if it was more affordable and i have not idea how that will be accomplished. There is very little to choose from as far as affordable lapidary machines. You could buy some kind of table grinder and modify, but that is the problem. People are seeing the price and opting to make there own or not to get into the hobby. diamond pads for angle grinders with a clamp to hold it in place. I hope for the best for the future of this company.

I'm shopping for a lapidary saw after scoring some great gem finds near Blowing Rock NC. and I'll be honest with you: this video has totally convinced me to go for the Rock Rascal over the Highland Park, but it mainly convinced me that I have sufficient cast-off machinery lying around to make a better one of my own.
Here's a clue. Tool users have certain qualities in common. We like to know the bare-bones facts. Too much editorializing, too much whining and putting the other guy down will make a serious guy puke faster than anything. You're seriously going to brag about a half-inch difference in tray size?? (Yes, we all saw you fudge the measurements.) And comparing a 40-year-old tool against your brand-new model...is that really fair?
I made it to the 4:47 mark. Seriously consider getting a pro to write your next video, and ANY different spokesman to record it.

Hi Joey, I appreciate your comments and I love some of the material coming out of NC. I think you may have missed my point on this video. My point was somewhat tongue in cheek and not a serious editorial study at all and I wanted make some blunt assessments.
I owned this unit since I was quite young and it was one of our pieces of equipment along with an old rock rascal grinder and a Highland Park Gravity feed saw. All three machines were lame in many ways and didn't perform well and this led my brother and I early on to think that perhaps lapidary was too difficult and unsatisfying. I'm sure these companies were happy we bought the machine but I seriously doubt they cared if we were successful once it went out the door. The absence of videos from all of the other manufactures including Rock Rascal is strong evidence of either their lack of knowledge or lack of interest in helping the hobbyist or professional be successful with their machines. Sadly people often buy a piece of equipment and struggle to be successful with it and end up loosing confidence in themselves not realizing that their problems are caused by the machine, and not their lack of skill. I hope this doesn't' happen to you. We started HPL because as the only manufacturer that cuts commercially (1-2 tons of cutting per week), we wanted to build machines that were high quality and at a fair price that would last a lifetime and provide confidence and success to the lapidarist.

Seriously, this is not an objective comparison. Maybe compare a brand new Rock Rascal to a brand new Highland Park.
