  • Nicholas Carr, author of Pulitzer Price finalist book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, sits down with Tuck Professor Alva Taylor to discuss how the massive loads of information can take away from ways of thinking. Nicholas believes you lose some potential as a thinker if you are always distracted and multi-tasking and he encourages enterprises to support disconnected operations for certain scenarios. They also explore the topics of privacy, security, BYOD, wearables and truly critical thinking about the use of technology's effect on living a balanced life. Nicholas offers his advice to parents, students and CEOs.

    I simply loved "Shallows" , Mr Carr and I'd like to thank you for it. I just realized that my life passes by while I spend too much time online. It has as well become shallower in tearms of poor concentration ability, less reading books and rise of overall mental pressure. Thanks for helping me realize that some change must be done.

    I finished watching a video on Vietnam then I marked assignments before I watched this video. And all from the same screen while I sat on the couch. I feel fine. I think I will buy the book. (online version) The Shallows.

    I think this guy is a little out of touch in his perceptions. However, he brings up a good point about technology's impact on society as a whole. I.E. he's using poor examples, but the underlying principle is somewhat grounded in reality. Honestly, it feels like he's regurgitating feynman's point about understanding how the world works vs rote memorization of the principles of physics from his essay o americano outra vez and applying it to the topic of technology. Nothing he's saying is really that new or ground breaking.

      @insightfuldumbass (yeah, fuck the x).
      Nothing new? We're dealing with a new technology. He is making observations on the impact of that new technology. There have been new technologies in the past, and they had an impact on how humans think. But the digital age and the level of information influx is unprecedented in volume, in impact to the people consuming i,t and to the number of people consuming it.
      This is a whole new ball game. Why do you talk about how something "feels?"
      Deep thinking is not associated with feelings. It is more connected to analysis and formulating of concepts.
