  • Short demonstration of the NEW Zenith STOL CH 701 rudder being assembled in less than ten minutes! Notice that Zenith Aircraft's Calvin Heintz and Jon Humberd only use hand tools (cleco temporary hole clamp fasteners), without any measuring or drilling tools required! Of course, they didn't rivet the assembly together in this video - this would have doubled the time needed to complete the rudder assembly (using a pneumatic rivet puller or hand riveter).

    Zenith Aircraft Company is in the process of updating the STOL CH 701 kit to incorporate the use of final hole size match-drilled parts throughout. First introduced in 1986, the STOL CH 701 aircraft was developed as an “off-airport” short take-off and landing kit aircraft to fulfill the demanding requirements of both sport pilots and first-time builders. With the STOL CH 701 designer Chris Heintz combined the features and advantages of a “real” airplane with the short-field capabilities of an “ultralight” aircraft. The aircraft features fixed leading-edge slats for high lift, full-span flaperons (both ailerons and flaps), an all-flying rudder, and durable all-metal construction.
    While the basic design has remained the same, many significant improvements have been introduced over the years, including a higher useful load, easier and quicker build kits, and more detailed drawings and step-by-step assembly instructions.
    The latest STOL CH 701 will introduce a number of new features in addition to being easier and quicker to build!

    I`m very impressed.
    know the videos by Jon Croke, the match drilled holes are a clear simplification.
    You can be really proud of your achievement! 👍
    Have other parts of the CH 701 already been converted to match drilled holes?

    Just waiting on my medical. Then comes the big question for me, 701 STOL or Cruzer.

    So excited to see Jon Humberd working for Zenith. I’m waiting to order the new design of the STOL CH701. I’m hoping for faster build time, more payload capacity and a stronger firewall rated for a engine bigger than 100hp. I know guys run 130hp like Jon’s UL Power with no issues. But insurance could become a problem by installing a engine bigger than the Airframe was designed for.
    Really looking forward to the new CH701. Hurry up and take my money…lol

    How about a cleco contest showdown between Jon and Mark Pensenstadler at the Zenith Homecoming this year?

    When are you projecting a full kit to be available in this fashion? How much cost is this going to add?

    Is there any deburring required?

      @markthibault8579 Před rokem +1

      Indeed. It would be good to know if deburring is needed with the matched final-size holes.

    Very cool! Are the cleco rivets just to get everything lined up? Then you would go back through and put permanent rivets in once its assembled?

    • @zenithac
      @zenithac  Před rokem

      Yes, clecos are temporary fasteners to hold an assembly together before final riveting
