This song is a masterpiece whether you're jewish or not you should be able to appreciate this! I'm 27 now and when I was just a kid my grandmother told me she came from a Jewish family... my mum (her daughter) said my grandmother was adopted and never knew her real family.. one day I'd love to find out for sure!! If it turns out I'm not, my love for this peice will still remain, it's so special!
A beautiful song recalling a world which no longer exists. Unfortunately (for me) this was used as the sound track accompanying the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto in Schindler's List and now the two are ungrained in my memory.
I've loved this song ever since I heard it over 50 years ago. Now when I hear it, this touching song brings me close to my parents who sadly passed away a few years ago.... 😔
she has the voice of an angel....I don't speak yiddish, except for a few words remaining from my childhood, so I never knew what this song is about....but my heart knows and understand, what it means to be "as old as the entire jewish race" as the russian poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko once said in his poem "Babi Yar"...

Canta mi alma junto a mi adorada mame.

Sleep, sleep, Yankele, my handsome son. Close your little black eyes. My little one, now that you have all your teeth - must you make your mother sing you to sleep? The little boy who has all his teeth and who, God permitting, will soon go to kheyder And learn Torah and Talmud - must he cry when his mama rocks him to sleep? The little boy who will learn Talmud - and how glad and proud in his heart your father is that you'll be learning Talmud - must he make his mother stay awake all night?
Durma, durma, Yankele, meu lindo filho.
In a world that does not exist anymore, I was told that little children were taught the Hebrew letters by letting them taste the letters made of dough and dipped in honey.

The music alone is gorgeous & moving for anyone. But w/lyrics is tenfold for Jews. The meaning in the seemingly simple words is key to how we survived as a people thousands of years. If you are curious, google the title, for lyrics, w/translation.
The structure and many words of Yiddish are of Southern German origin, and some of the grammar and many words are of Hebrew origin, plus some Slavic thrown in for good measure.
This is an old shtetl song from the Ukraine, very popular and written about 1900. You can find the English words to it on the Internet or at another CZcams version. You should.
