    Might as well throw Metro Inc in there. A mall near me has a Metro, and Metro’s deal with the mall stipulates that they’re the only ones allowed to sell dairy or bread, to the point where even if any coffee shops attempt to open in the mall they aren’t allowed to add milk or cream to their coffee, aren’t allowed to offer bagels with cream cheese, etc. It’s absurd.

      The big five grocers have a great sense of entitlement that comes from being spoiled over the years by a corrupt tax system that allows them to manufacture loses and failures that get socialized at the tax payers expense, as taxpayers have to mitigate the cost of this socialization. No wonder we have an economy where the small guy and small businesses have to mitigate the lack of real capitalistic competition. Such is the realty when we see Canada having a distorted and pernicious form of competition because it has primarily an economy of monopolistic power that exploits a population, rather than serving it.

    • @rps1689
      @rps1689 Před měsícem

      Brings to mind compounded markup, where a parent company, more so a monopolistic outfit, inflates and manufactures overhead by means of using too many of its subsidiaries unnecessarily in order to inflate the price several times; a form of hidden price gouging. The most effected products of this is bottled water, baking products, and brand name drugs. Compound markup in not only confined to subsidiaries; we see it also in transport that affects prices on the shelves. Just one of the ways to collectively disguise price gouging as “inflation”. This gimmick does create some jobs, but mostly low paying ones; and also indirectly over time devalues the earnings of the consumer.

And no party is going to do a thing about it. pierre will avoid saying anything on it and trudeau will talk about it and do nothing. No point saying anything on NDP as we have never had the NDP win at the federal level. We just go from conservative to liberal and back repeat.

      Unfortunately George Weston Ltd. to a great extent has a stranglehold on the country like some other monopolistic outfits do. Canada has a distorted and pernicious form of competition. This is because it has primarily an economy of monopolistic power that limits real capitalistic competition. Monopolistic competition, is what we are primarily seeing in Canada, which is when any product is being offered by a handful of sellers effecting a small competition between them hence very little control from the buyer front.
