- We discuss the May-long boycott of Loblaw and affiliated stores with Canda's Food Professor Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University. He explains the protest's size and impact, demands for pricing transparency and Loblaw's response. Charlebois also touches on the broader issue of high grocery prices and if this protest could shake up the supermarket scene.

I'm a senior, not on any reddit, but I'm prepared to boycott Loblaws & Shoppers for this month.
Please join us!
Oh, good for you. LOL
@@CanMexGuy you have something stuck crossways today?
Senior here too! I shopped for the first time ever at Food Basics today. I saved money--significant money--which was a real surprise. I'm doing the boycott, but I'm also moving away from loblaws for the longterm too.
We're all stronger when we work together!
@brentmorrison3392 I'm done with Shoppers--I switched pharmacies a couple weeks ago. Do you know how easy it is, lol?
I literally walked into a local pharmacy near me, talked to them for less than 5 minutes--AND THEY DID THE REST!
All they have to do is call your old Shoppers & have your digital file transferred. Start to finish the process took 24 hours, & less than 5 minutes of my time.
I'm on board, I've been boycotting Shopper's for years. Prices there have been ridiculous for years.
Oh yes I never go to Shoppers. Their prices are ridiculous. I go to a small private drugstore where there’s no waiting and he doesn’t have to look it up in the system. He knows exactly what I need…and a drug I take is $9 less than if I filled that prescription at Shoppers. It happened to me one time I had to go late at night when my druggist wasn’t open so went to Shoppers and it was a ridiculous price besides having to wait for 45 minutes
No, the price is not dropping at all. low-quality products and low ingredients than before. The Shrinkflation as well.
Yes, ingredients are replaced e.g., chocolate flavor over real cocoa.
I needed a bottle of cough medecine - bought a small bottle of Benelyn All In One for $20.99 + tax at Shoppers. Had to buy another so went to Walmart and found the same size for only !4.99 + tax and the large size (which I did buy) was only $19.99 + taxThat's a $6.00 difference for the small bottle and the large bottle was still less than the small one at Shoppers. I'm happy to be part of the boycott
"Prices are dropping but it's not because of the boycott" Yeah genius, the boycott just started, of course it hasn't accomplished anything yet. This guy seems pretty desperate for people to keep shopping at Loblaws.
Roblaws !
😂 LOL
@@CanMexGuy whoops there we go again…come on get it out…..lololol
Cheapest in Alberta. I don’t know about the rest of the country.
Prices are way too high. I’ve changed my diet accordingly. The worst is seeing stressed out seniors in the aisles.
Loblaws owns many other stores. People have to know what they own and boycott all of them
I was at No Frills this afternoon and it was as busy as ever. We were all saving money by NOT shopping up the road where prices are even higher.
There are still people with brains who understand this. Not many apparently, but we're here.
@brentmorrison3392 please get acquainted with your health and prescription info. Your info is all in a provincial system…from one province to the next actually. I can go to another city or province and a druggist just has to look in the system…or it’s all on my provincial health site on my iPhone….jeez wake up
I am on board for this boycott. Hate the ignorance of Loblaw.
when they changed the 50% off for foods about to expire to 30% and went back to 50% because of public outcry proves how disgusting they are!
We the consumers do HAVE the absolute POWER! Watch what happens with gluttonous corporations greed going forward! Stocks will go into free fall!
LOL, sure ace!
Just so people know: IT IS INCREDIBLY EASY TO SWITCH PHARMACIES!!!
I did it a couple of weeks ago--just walked into a local pharmacy, took 5 minutes to explain what I wanted & set up my profile... AND THEY DID THE REST!
They called my old Shoppers to have my digital file transferred, & it was done by the next day. That's it!
Super-easy way to let Loblaws know you don't appreciate their price gouging.
BEST IS NEVER BUY FROM BIG CHAIN STORES BUY FROM SMALL GEROCERY STORES INDEPENDLY OWNED
Oh go blow. A small lousy steak is 17.00! Minimum. Im in NB and I dont know how people feed their children!!!
I think it will be more than one day...
Remember the bread price fixing scandal. That's just ONCE INSTANCE we know about.
I am jumping in all the way: not only I am boycotting Loblaws and their other stores, but also the other big players like Walmart, Metro, IGA etc.
I totally encourage this boycott! Here on the south shore of Montreal I go shopping more and more at CT market (asiatic ). They have a good variety of fruits and vegetables, tea.. Etc and they beat Loblaw's prices.
The main weakness of the big three is their wallet! Yes the boycott is a good idea but it would have to be a massive one to be effective! The minister champagne is too weak reacting to the big three.
According to the bank of Canada, productivity and efficiency in Canada are DOWN 21% compared to the USA! So why Canadians consumers should pay and encourage the inefficiency and incompetence of Loblaw's management? (same thing for Sobeys and Metro)
This guest was on another media and threw in the word "fair" at least a dozen times in that clip, trying to gaslight us into believing Lobkaws is fair. Lobkaws, the Galen clan are NOT fair.
I will bring my money elsewhere and I won't tell these big Corps. They have taken advantage 4 far 2 long!
Boycotting Loblaws (and affiliated stores), as well as Wal-Mart and Sobeys this month. Food prices, for even the most basic things, have become far too high. I should not have to donate organs on the black market to be able to afford things like humdrum oatmeal, plain rice, dry pasta, potatoes, onions, carrots, and bread. These are not luxury items, but they're sure being priced like 'em.
When grocery robber-barons can't even answer a simple question like "how much profit would be enough", you know there will be no end in sight without action being taken. These companies and their CEOs are raking in record-shattering profits year after year, and then saying "oh, but it's not our fault that grocery prices are high". Liars and thieves, the lot of 'em. As if we should ever believe anything billionaires say.
We can't let them starve us to death any longer. They must be stopped.
''As if we should ever believe anything billionaires say.'': exactly. They are only looking to protect their interests at our expense and will say and do anything to preserve their luxurious lifestyles. They don't see us as human beings, we are just consumers aka walking wallets to them.
Credit card debt for food sky high. Pay day loans and all kinds of debt. Loblaws in particular are very greedy.
I have a question for this so call analysit: if EVERYONE ELSES DATA indicates that prices are going up, but ONLY YOUR data does not change, doesnt that mean that, maybe, your data happens to be wrong?
I can't understand. If consumers are spending less on groceries, and the groceries prices are dropping, how labblaw is getting more profit?
Gateway Giant Tiger Dollarama, subsidized and way cheaper. It would make you puke how much markup is on a 12 pack of maple leaf little hot dogs
Why is he so greedy
It's a sickness
I'll support lawblaws long before I support Singhs brother at metro
Chicken is not cheaper than last year. I buy the same groceries every month it cost me about $125 more a month now. Professor Sylvain you are a Loblaw shill.
I am a senior relying on Lolaws dividends to survive. Now thousands of seniors are trying to kill my company Lolaws. Why are these seniors killing other seniors. This is a seniors vs seniors battle.
This so expert is a joke. I'm a Ontarian with a PWC consultant level paycheck, which is more than the regular Ontarian gets and our groceries are not even close to 8.5% of our income,it is takes -+40% of our income being the 2 most expensive item, following rent very very closing. What a joke.
I avoid Loblaws whenever possible.
Like to know what store the prices are dropping cause it not in any store i shop
Ya go to local independent grocers and you pay triple
Not seeing that price reduction yet in BC. Not sure if those numbers are centered on Ontario, but can't say i've witnessed any reductions in the products stated here, yet.... however, the increases have slowed down for sure, though not sure if the stores themselves are starting to eat those cost increases to force inflation down and be competitive.
We'll see after we're nuked this summer by another long, sunny season.
Recommends small independent grocers. If you think Loblaw’s is expensive!
Check on Google Maps. Canada is really big.
The govt needs to step in and stop raising prices, not just Loblaws, but all companies overcharging because they can.
Enough already we the people need to stop buying certain items that are ridiculous priced.
Stand your ground
Oh Damn I started my boycott a few years ago.
You're an early bloomer!
We should boycott a different grocer every month.
Having a organized boycott can help speed things up but we can still do it on our own. I've been boycotting Sobeys (they are even worse than Loblaw) by myself for a year now and did most of my grocery shopping at local meat and veggie markets as well as dollar store. Now I'm so used to it, adding Loblaw to my boycott list doesn't affect me at all, plus I've also saved up so much by shop locally (they are typically 20%-50% cheaper than those greedy grocery chains). We could all do it, it's not hard. At first it may sound like a big change, but once you make the change and make it your everyday life, you can continue it months after months without feeling any inconvenience. 👍 Also trust me, if we really want to make this boycott work, we need much more than one month.
I'm boycotting as well. It may or may not make a big difference, but I'm sure Loblaws and Weston will take note of it! This guy said chicken was cheaper this year. Really? Where? I wait for it to go on sale before I buy it. It's an outrageous price this year!
Love it! Except for meat and fresh produce I buy all my staples at SuperStore (Loblaws in BC) Don’t buy meat there cause you can smell the stink of the meat dept (don’t know what’s rotting back there) from a long way off and their produce is mostly not edible. Will go to our new Walmart up the road for those goods and hopefully will never go back. I buy my meat and produce at a Save On or Costco. Will not set foot into a Loblaw’s for every day in May and see where that takes me. I have a feeling I’ll never go back
This is not an airport. No need to announce your departure. 🖐
Thank you for announcing your departure!
It's inspiring to see so many Canadians recognizing the POWER we have.
Groceries are expensive because of excessive taxation. Grocery stores need profits in order to pay employees
They’re cutting hours at the grocery stores for workers they are trying to save money.
Need Price fixing who you gonna call lowblaws
This is on manufacturers as well as grocers.
I've seen this guy now a few times. I think he's shill for Loblaws. "Loblaws only has 29% of the share that's not even 1/3". The next closest is Sobeys, theN Metro, costco, then walmart. That's your top 5 in Canada. So Loblaws is the biggest in canada with 9% more market share than its closest competitor Sobeys who has 20%.
I will agree with him to go to smaller independents, which is where i went today and most days
I only shop at Loblaws for their discount bakery and produce and the odd great sale or specialty item. I switched to Walmart during covid because they had a well organized online ordering and pick up and found the prices to be much better and they have stayed reasonable during this inflation period. I do like that Loblaws offers a good selection of ready made meals and I did on occasion buy them but I find the quality isn't great or as good as I think it should be for the prices. There's a local Italian grocery store in my area with oodles of ready made meals at very reasonable prices so I go there now.
Loblaws has always been super expensive.
In Alberta Superstore is the cheapest except for Walmart.
Shop at metro stores jagmets brother is a lobbyists for them.
Prices are going down? Where? One month boycott is not enough.
According to statistics Canada 🍁, food price rise in 2022 was 9.8% and in 2023 food price rose again between 5 and 7. 5%...and more again in 2024..... So even if the prices slightly decreased lately we can't see the difference at the end of the month. Charlebois always gives evasive explanation... I don't know why they still invite him to comment ?
I'm in Ontario and griceries is not 8.5% of income.
I quarter profit for Loblaws up, and Galen Weston gave him self a $4. million bonus
Start planting your garden,if your successful you will need to learn how to CAN your harvest
Exactly! Most of these complaining people won't bother trying to plant a garden or grow countertop sprouts. Learn how to can &/or buy a freezer. Neither will they learn to make and keep a budget, learn to eat food within season, on sale & eat from their pantry staples. Plant & nurture a garden people. You can grow them on patios, backyards, front yards & even in your elderly neighbour's yard, (if they agree).
Untill i see my dogs canned food drop back to $1.10 from $2.70 the boycott failed
Just go in there and cut all the steak packages so they go 50% off
All big box grocery stores are expensive
If the prices are too much go somewhere else. I seldom shop at Loblaws because they have always been more money.
Butter in sale Flipp online flyer ,at Loblaws , $8.49. In Ottawa..
$4.99 at Sobeys..
During their boycott, like the CEO cares.
Boycott of MacDonald KFC et., European and American franchises worked in the Muslim world, so shall this boycott.
I keep wondering when we will see mass looting like in California.. i hope we dont, but i also cant imagine how hard it is for minimum age workers to feed themselves. Damn
Support local ❤farmers markets
So....ppl plan on boycotting all major grocery stores? Have fun doing groceries at the Dollar Store! 😂
May 11th and Loblaws share prices are up. LOL.
And how is the boycott going? LOL
Those who voted for Trudeau's disastrous policies get Trudeau prices. Why are you complaining.
Yeah, people who need to pay rent will just stop buying food, makes sense.
I don't shop at loblaws I borrow what I need - they're good for it
Prices aren't dropping you liars. You think we don't know how to read price tags?
I don't believe you know how to shop sales, necessities, in season & within a budget. That is clear.
Lol. Doesn't seem to smart to boycott the cheapest grocery stores
I too find Loblaws the cheapest grocery stores with the best sales. I can walk or bike to my No Frills, (2 km/way) without spending extra money on petrol. Loblaws also uses Flash Foods, (50% off), where as most of the other stores don't. Many of the No Frills. (which are independently owned), stores in my city also donate to school & neighbourhood food, programs including the food bank, run by volunteers. Happy Gardening.
I feel for the employees who have to feed their families. Boycott by buying smarter, adjust your purchasing to avoid items hit hard by inflation.
We have adjusted shopping since the days of the pandemic and really don't notice inflation!
👎I am a fan of boycotting Loblaws, the prices are appalling ! Prices have gone up and up and up ! Loblaws PR strategy is not great, that's an underststement, I remember the bread fiasco. I am now giving my money to local businesss.
Boycott is working out okay… no line ups and no woke a-holes bitching and complaining to store employees. It’s actually quite refreshing.
Hey it's the price fixing company
I'll support lawblaws long before i support Jagmeet singhs brother at Metro
Talking heads will Yap all day about how Loblaws has done nothing wrong. Frankly bullshit.
Sure terrible government policies and atrocious fiscal mismanagement has nothing to do with high prices. More carbon tax please.
I agree with the boycott but I don't think it will make a difference.
Canadians won't do it...they're to compliant.
Grocery stores can increase profits by raising prices? I'm glad they didn't figure this out 20 yrs ago. Or maybe it's the carbon tax????
I can go to Russia and live real good
So what’s stopping you?
"I'm going to refuse to shop at a store which rips me off!! Instead, I'm going to go shop at the other store which is an even bigger ripoff!!"
Said absolutely no one who's not a complete m*ron! SMFH!🚽🚽🚽
Since the workers are union then i wont be joining you nerds in a pointless boycott
How is your, over priced unionized food?
