“It’s not that life is short, it’s that we waste a lot of it”- I’ve been biting my nails scared to getting older (I’ll be 24 in about 2 months). And this quote resonated so well with me, I’ve been afraid of running out of time because I think I don’t have much time left. But this fear of losing time has been making me waste time… this is such a vicious cycle. Thank you for this amazing video! 😊💙
Hi Sia, take a moment to read my comment above. It's about my take and views on time and potentiality. I am just a normal guy, who loves to understand the elements and dynamics of reality. I do have a business, and my greatest challenge has been time availability. In my particular situation, I feel obligated to be there for so many family members who are needy and they drain me of my time and energy, so I am left with not enough of myself to grow my business. At the same time, I enjoy being with family and it feels good to know that I was there for them when it mattered, I might never get that chance again. So what I am trying to say is, that spending time and helping the people that matter to you, that you love will count for more at the end of your life. In our last days, we are more likely to regret not enjoying life enough, not connecting enough with our hearts. This is what makes us feel more alive, more than the dopamine that comes with winning, popularity and addictions. What really counts is the meaningful energy, love, and joy, these are the things that invigorate and nurture our souls. Positive energy. The brain chemical for love is oxytocin but produced naturally when we put our hearts in the right place, live for love and joy. It gets tricky because its in the same arena of pleasure, where many get addicted. We're emotional beings, but try to be a bit more rational more than emotional, to keep your inner drama in check. Well, nice chatting. Goodluck.
@@davidanthony6408 thank you for your wisdom! Life can be a bit of a balancing act, I am very career driven so I get a lot of happiness and fulfilment from that sort of success but I am aware that genuine human connection is also necessary for fulfilment. I completely agree with you and am so grateful to hear your story. Thank you 💙
You are still very young wish you all thr best coming from a 34 year old
@@monocyte2210 Thank you! I appreciate it!
24 !!!! LOOOOOL You already outlived many of my friends. GO!!!!!!!!!
It's amazing how've you managed to go over the same material in different ways for so long. You must know the stoic works word for word at this point.
I am now 23 years old, going through a lot of changes which at some point made me feel like my life was turning apart, and in fact it is, but now I see the value in what is happening, and I wanted to thank you for not letting the stoic's word die! I value your work a lot. Thank you, again.
Keep your head up. Hope you’re doing better
I just wanted to say thank you Ryan, I have been practising (loosely) stoicism for a few years, and found it helps me.
But, last Christmas and New Year Covid nearly killed me, and in early January, I could barely breath, barely walk, barely read or write.
Today as I close in on the anniversary of catching the virus, I am not sad, unhappy or dwelling on the past - I still have some health challenges that is the extremes of covid disease. But I have read many books this year, practiced hard, and read hard, and written lots. In March, having learnt to walk in Jan, I ran a mile, in June I ran 10 miles, and in September I went both half marathon distance, and did a competitive mile. My mile time was still poor, but I did it - I need to recover 30 seconds to be back to pre-covid. But my half marathon time was not far off - around six minutes or so a 1:43. My best since passing 40 being 1:37 - so not the end of the world.
This does work, focus on being the best version of yourself, and thank you Ryan for personally inspiring me to keep reading my Daily Stoic, keep journalling and keep pushing myself.
I hope your family and you enjoy Christmas and the New Year. Best wishes.
Glad you used this time to improve yourself rather than wallow in self pity. Kudos!
@@rid.h.tom.4296 Self pity, serves no one, and adds nothing of value to life.
I just try to be the best that I can be, each day, and work on improving from that point.
You are strong and I'm proud of you! Best wishes!
A year later, I hope you're feeling better!
@@francelaferriere6106 Im doing okay, I have long covid, but it is manageable. And I am still making the most of the life I have left.
Seneca’s the goat
Focus. Having the courage to say no to the non essential, lending more time for the essential. Thank you Ryan
I was surfing the net to get the best way to preserve my hard copy books, and found Ryan. I have since been his follower. The daily stoic and the daily dad are my favourite text to read each day.
Seneca. My new role model.
Been the BIGGEST challenge of my life lately. 56 years old. Always trying to NOT waste my time.
Summary:
1. Seek challenges
2. Focus on your response
3. Choose your influences wisely
4. Be a master of yourself
5. Say yes to what matters
6. Do the hard things
7. Protect your time
8. Make others better
I’m only 16 but this stuff is helping my mind so much thanks!
I wish you would host a stoic weekend retreat and seminar so we could all meet and encourage each other!
it's not by him, but he once participated: Do you know the Stoiccon? its on Saturday in fact
Thank you Ryan. My name is Logan I am trying to turn a lifetime of iggnorent learnings from my community around me. You have been byfar the most reliable source of information and quotes. Thank you for what you do.
The best way to master yourself is to debate yourself. Once you have learnt to master debating yourself you will feel a huge intellectual relief.
How do you go about that?
Oh man, you’re so lucky to have cicadas on your farm. I’ve found their sound to be so relaxing. They were everywhere in Virginia where I grew up and don’t exist here in Germany. Thank you for your lessons! Through stoic philosophy, I think I’ve finally found a way to live my life. I was and always will be a soldier and the concept of self discipline is very near and dear to my heart. I lost my way after leaving the military but have found it again by applying stoic philosophy to my life. Every day is a gift. Time is precious and wasting it is crazy. Momento Mori has become the new way I strive to better myself each and every day.
We have cicada season where everyone complains about the noise. I decided to research them and meditate at the time their calls were the loudest. It really is all up to you.
They do exist in southern Moravia in Czech. Its not that far as Virginia from Germany.
“You do get to chose whose child you want to be”💎
I can decide whose descendant I want to be. Thank you for this powerful insight.
I cannot like this talk enough. Spectacular. So much to learn from the ancients. People's desire for meaning and self improvement never change. Thank you.
this is helping me deal with a lot, hope this reaches those who need this the most....by realising one has to confront fear head on - i ask what - all the thousands of singular questions that ask you unconsciously is not what you have to trust and land on, its the unbelievable force that can confront fear/all thats causing pain and suffering and everything else you are not comfortable with and afraid of....there is anunimaginable universe of stength and all that is...believe me...im seeing it tooo transitioning back and forth....and the doubt thats raising more questions and the faith and trust in this force ----teying to test myself with these back and forth ---- is opening gates to glimpses of existense of a huge amountnof good and healing....and the experience is unbelievable..for a mome t...and it goes away....what is it this that i am going back and forth from...
You’re putting into words and elucidating how I’ve been feeling, how I’ve been trying to live, and how I aspire to grow. Thank you for all of your work! It’s obvious that you are very passionate and knowledgeable about Stoicism - and I’m hooked!
Thank you Ryan, you help make me better and give me hope as I walk this planet alone.
Needed this video more than anything in life right now. Thank you
Train the mind body will follow rigorously🕉
I've read and finished three books. The obstacle is the way, Ego is the enemy and Stillness is the key. These three books dramatically changed my overview of life...The stoic mentality is such powerful! Awesome video and truly helpful
i am such a fan. i am becoming a stoic more everyday.
You are doing great service to mankind with these videos. It really helps us to live a better life.
Absolutely love your channel, man! Keep up your amazing work and thank you.
I don't know how many NFL teams you made it to but a lot of the players need to listen
I have been binge watching your videos. I am primed to execute, all i have to do is take the leap. Thank you Ryan, wish me luck on changing my life.
Yet ANOTHER AWESOME VIDEO!!! Thank you!
Watching your videos had made me realize I follow many Stoic traits naturally. However, the enlightenment from the knowledge you are spreading is really got my mind working. Love the content, excellent work.... seriously.
I love these little nuggets. Thank you!
This is AMAZING! Thank you for the emails and thank you for these videos.
The “who’s footsteps will you follow” hit home. I am an adopted person who has no family connection unfortunately. It has been a struggle to find my true identity in this life. I don’t have to know my ancestors necessarily to find footsteps to follow. I can create my own clan of sorts. Mentors and ancients that speak to me can be my way forward. Amazing! I love your work Ryan, I have recently found stoicism and your teachings. I have had many life struggles and this way of thinking has given me hope and solace, as have you.
May you find who you are supposed to be.
Love this channel!
I look forward to your videos. I watch them several times. They do absolutely help me .
Thank you like always for your videos,Ryan :).

You’re a compelling exponent of this incredibly helpful school . All the best and please keep up the good work .
Great advice Ryan. It is super-important for me precisely at this time. It’s not only what you decide to do, it’s about what you decide not to do or stop doing.
I've always loved, respected Seneca! A great soul!
Thank you brother
Thank you Ryan for all of this. From now on, I promise to make myself better just like what you are doing...👊👊👊

The way Ryan concluded this video was very very good.

As a teenager and still in my growing stage i am very happy that i found the way of thinking like a stoic this early in my life, my body has been growing steadily each day because ive been challenging and making my body go through hard chores and all that, i am very excited on who and what i will become in the future.

Hello Ryan, I want to thank you for your postings. I push myself everyday and focus on my charity work every single day. I have let go of the people who saw me as weak and simply used me. I am so grateful to you for giving me the inner strength to push myself. Love from Vancouver BC. Canada
Awesome!
Great Video. Thanks.
The video production just keeps getting better
Love you man 💖
thank you so much
One thing I realised after reflecting on my years in senior high school, college, and university that I think can also be applied here is how if we want to continuously improve ourselves, we should always try to find people who are (1) better than us (i.e. mentors, teachers, elders) so that we can learn from them, (2) people who are not as good as us (i.e. juniors, younger people, less skilled than us) so that we can teach them, and (3) people who are the equal of us so that we can challenge ourselves with them.
Also, thank you Ryan for sharing these little treasures of Stoic wisdom! They are thought-provoking and great reminders for me to continuously reflect on, and I find they are also very consistent with Chinese philosophy
Great content
thank you
Wow, I am going to send this to others to inspire them as well. Thank you a lot for your amazing work and video's!!
This video bears repeating often...thanks.
I thought I was the only one living the life of Sysiphous and feeling so victimized but clearly Seneca lived that life and is a great inspiration to me. Thank you for this video
One of my favorite quote by Seneca is “You cannot win the time lottery” One the shortness of life

@RyanHoliday You should seriously consider having an in-person conference. I would love to spend time with like minded people. Iron sharpens Iron. It would be amazing.
Thanks for the timestamps. This should be standard among youtubers.

eBay my friend. Used books have more character anyway! Ryan’s works are worth finding a hardback.
I'm in college and this semester has not gone well at all for me. It is likely I will have to retake one or two of my classes. It is my fault in all honesty, but also up to me to learn from my mistakes. I needed this video today, so thank you.
