- Tokyo is famous for their high rent prices, especially in the relatively cheap Japanese housing market. So in this video, I asked people on the streets of Tokyo, “how much do you pay for rent” and saw if we could get an apartment tour!!

She single tho and wastes hella money, I make 3k more than her and I spend way less on housing and items and invest the rest because Im not gonna work forever, Im going to retire early. Shes going to work the rest of her life. And I still got 2 motorcycles a car and 2 houses paid off. Also my 4SLDK 1 stop away from Yokohama Station is only 1100 (160,000) even though I can obviously afford way more but why the eff would i make somone else rich? Im going to reinvest the savings

many career women there seem spend everything on a luxurious lifestyle and are left with nothing much savings wise. It's ok as long as your work is stable and you are young, but it might be risky long term.

Not to mention, that car is probably on credit, so... probably can't risk lower income.

But given the current times, I think it's wiser to save and invest your money in a way to make it work for you and your health, rather than spending everything in exquisite but needlessly expensive stuff.
As you said, her car is probably credit (it seems like a Porsche), as probably much of her furnitures.
From my point of view and experience, a better alternative would be to live as cheap and healthy as possible not too far from your workplace, and put the rest of the money where it can buy you a more peaceful life later.
Because even if the salary is high, the cost of living is too. So you are not buying time for yourself with that lifestyle. And as you age, time and peace are more valuable than expensive stuff imo.

I love the view from Leah's apartment. Her place would be my dream apartment. I wish that we could have seen her custom sofa. I like the thought of room service in the building. It would be hard for me to leave. She's living the life. The Pokemon apartment was very nice. I like that they use their love for anime/manga for decorating inspiration. The 400 plants are a lot to care for but it looks wonderful.

Maybe I've seen too many "Day in the life" videos of people in Japan, but the tiny apartments they live in and the insanely long hours of work would make me depressed.

@@akikiaovie it's true, but what I meant was that soon enough the pay will go down when programmers can be found easier than finding air... Once the supply of programmers is higher than the demand, many programmers will end up getting paid less unless they can do something special that most other programmers can't do :/ so eventually it will mean that this specific job choice won't guarantee a good pay anymore
and since the kids in our generation are all learning to be programmers and write code and learn programming languages just as commonly as one would learn spanish or some other spoken language in school, i can easily see it becoming saturated to the point where it doesn't pay all that much more than being a translator at base pay, for example if you're not highly sought after then they might be unable to find a reason to hire you for more money when they could hire another worker with the same skill set for cheaper that would accept that pay

For non-Japanese watching this video - the places they went inside were considered luxury apartments in some of the most expensive neighborhoods in Tokyo, and they used one of the most expensive real estate agents in Tokyo (I see his instagram ads often). If you're coming from a western country, rent prices here are super low. I've never paid more than 1000 USD a month in rent, and I've lived in some fantastic apartments in amazing and popular neighborhoods. Don't let the two foreigners rent prices make you think Tokyo is that expensive. It's not.

Ok thank you. I thought I was going to have to spend what Leah spends for a nice place. I get a little over $5000 a month from my retirement. Currently in the Philippines but I have been talking with a Japanese woman. That owns a fashion company in Tokyo. She's looking for a husband and i'm looking for a wife.

I am generally blown away at the prices. I live in Chicago for a two bedroom with in-unit wash and dryer and some bells and whistles is $2,700 USD.
Currently paying $2100 for 700 square feet about 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Decent neighborhood in decent complex with decent amenities. Lived in Tokyo about 15 miles from the downtown area. $600 for 600 square foot duplex. Admittedly an older house, but the savings was worth it.

Very interesting watching this from my perspective. A lot of people from the US like myself can get desensitized to the little things (such as 2 tvs or expensive furniture). It is cool to see your reactions when Leah mentions something that may seem normal to me.

This is so interesting! I live in America and after watching this I feel like where I live is expensive. Haha! I pay over $1,500 for rent (which is considered cheap - especially for where I live) for a 768 sq ft apartment and I also am a plant hobbyist like Philip and it really is an expensive hobby here in the US.. 😅

Tokyo has a very wide range of prices depending on the location and quality/fanciness of the apartment.
On the low end for a single person, finding a ~60 000 yen apartment (1K/1DK, 25m2) of "good enough" quality, nothing fancy, is fairly easy. And I'm talking in the 23 wards. Of course inside the 23 wards, some will be harder than others. Minato-ku for example will be a challenge, while Adachi-ku or Itabashi-ku are stupid easy and filled with cheap apartments. Other cheap wards include Edogawa-ku, Katsushika-ku, Arakawa-ku etc.
For 2 people (2DK), a 100 000 yen/month will serve you OK. Again, nothing fancy.
Now if you go fancy and go for the tower mansions etc. Then that's where it goes up a TON and sky's the limit. The foreign guy is overpaying (in my view). He could halves his rent and have a good place of the same size. It's just that "tower mansion" buildings that new are ridiculously expensive. He probably has US rent prices in mind though.
I agree with everything you said. I live in Tokyo and pay 100,000 yen a month for an 80 square meter 3LDK. It's not close to a trendy station, but only 15 minutes train to Ikebukuro or 25 to Shinjuku, which are both hugely popular areas. I used to live centrally, in a trendy area, and in a new apartment building and paid the same price for a tiny 1K. It all depends on location and the type of building you live in.

It's interesting comparing Philip (Software Engineer) vs Leah (IT). Both have fantastic homes and good wages. But both are dumping around 50% of their income into rent ($3500-5000 per month), leaving very little in savings. I'm more interested in the lifestyles of the people who were paying less than $1000/month but also working in comparable jobs. Their buying power must be much higher, despite not being as flashy as Philip or Leah.
Nah that Philip guy is getting way more, he said at least 200k$ a year, and this is what happens when you start getting a lot of money per month. It's just lifestyle inflation. In all honesty it's crazy that somehow IT people still get paid this much nowadays. Probably relocation to Japan, remotely working for something in LA, otherwise cannot understand how these money they are getting happen. Definitely unique cases. They are certainly paying ridiculous amount in rent.
Yeah Philip is earning about 16.7k a month and that rent isn't even 1/3 of his salary, which is the sort of like the recommended amount you should come out for rent
I can guarantee you Leah is from a wealthy family who has an inheritance for her so savings don't matter. And her family might even give her a monthly stipend as well - this is pretty common in Asia among wealthy families, the kids are forced to get jobs because the parents don't give them much of an allowance.
I think she actually answered the question relative to how much she makes PER WEEK, not per month, that would be about $364k, which sounds reasonable for the life she seemed to be living. Even if she was talking biweekly pay, that's $168k. Not to mention investments and other things

Went to uni in Tokyo 20 years ago and lived in Hakusan/Honkomagome area - 1 bed apt in 3 storey house - bedroom, tiny balcony, entrance/kitchen, washer/dryer room, toilet/bath/shower, roof for laundry. - rent was subsidised & organised by uni so only paid Y1000 per day/night - would've probably cost x3/4 more if I had to rent directly, even though it was next to a graveyard (Japanese superstition affecting price) - fine by me - very quiet neighbours!

Yep Japan is cheaper for housing than most big cities in America. But I think certain fruits and veggies way cheaper in America.
If you live and earn in yen Japan is not cheap. The average sallary in Tokyo is 300k ¥. And Tokyo has the highest sallaries in Japan.

In Sweden the rent for a 2 room apartment is around 10 000 Swedish kronor (1000 USD) per month, and the average salary per month after taxes for most people is around 20 000 kr (2000 USD).

In Poland at the moment you will pay PLN 3000 for 2 rooms and the average salary is about PLN 5000 it's funny that you can find an old apartment but it is from idk 1960 and it actually looks like time has stopped
I'm renting a house outside of Tokyo in Kumagaya. Its 68000 Yen per month. I have a garden and 2 parking spaces. The house is huge, but a little old. My company pays me around 30000 per month for living expenses, so I'm only paying about 40000 Yen monthly.
Kumagaya is maybe one of the wrost place to live in saitama, behind kurds infested kawaguchi.

I'm from the UK & nowadays it's becoming much more common for people to live with their parents as rent is much higher compared to what it used to be. My brother is 30 & still lives with our parents.

If you have 400 plants, it is not bad to use self-watering pots for those who need more water. Then you do not have to water for 4 hours. As nerd, you could come up with many solutions how to make it more automaticated.
Leah appears to be the very self-confident and well grounded type person, even though she dresses in glamorous style.
I think leaving my parents house and living alone has made me a more independent person. Even though the rent is high, it's a cheap price compared to how the experiences enriches your life and makes you overall a better person.

Tokyo is not expensive compared to other major international cities. You can find a small studio for 500 USD or pay 5000 USD and live in an upscale area. Depends on your needs. I've paid around 750 USD for a 1 bedroom apartment in Shinjuku. Now I pay the same amount in Mexico City ! And that is considered low here in the middle class neighborhoods. Many people 1000 and up here. I would say as someone having lived in major cities including Tokyo and Mexico City that the cost of living is similar to certain extend. In Japan my groceries were a lot cheaper than here in Mexico. I probably ate less in Japan and more healthier. But the supermarkets are great in Japan because they offer discount after 7 pm, as well as the convenience stores.
Currently living in Colombia for one year. I believe this in general is true: If you want to live like a European/US-cit in Latin America you end up paying more than in your own country.

TLDR, try to work for a foreign company, whilst still living in Japan.
If you work for a Japanese company be prepared to make roughly 30-50% less than the same job in the U.S. for example.
I'm a systems engineer (IaaS) who spent years looking for the right opportunity to do just that.
I got a job working for a U.S. company that pays in USD at a U.S. rate.
The difference? I make ~135k/yr instead of ~70k/yr that a Japanese company pays for the same job >_>
