EPISODE 52
When moving around outside the boat, even with a planned railed pulpit at the stern, and maybe at the bow, handles are key for safety and avoiding man overboard dramas. Older handles I'd installed weren't up to the job, so here I replace them, add another, and insulate the bare stainless steel for use in the cold..
Products mentioned:
80cm and 30cm stainless steel handrails with circular welded brackets
50mm polyolefin 3:1 heat shrink
PVC walkway conduit
X8 Hybrid Sealant
Bostik Simson ISR 70-03 Sealant
Dowsil Silicone Sealant 791T
3M 1099 Rubber Adhesive
Model: NME A/S (Husnes, Norway) 7.5m TELB
Engine: Bukh DV48 turbo diesel

Bostik is a gold standard in jacht building, you defenetly made the right choice
“This is counterproductive to my happiness.”
Just remember to leave a long line with floaters dragging behind Allen when at sea so if you fall you can grab something and.... Not die.
I love your project I even saw a beautiful lifeboat for sale online and wished I could return to Europe.
Yes indeed. A similar trick is used by some dog team drivers I know :)
Those are of very limited use. People have tested the idea, and if the boat is moving at even just a few knots, the force of the water flowing past you will make it impossible to pull yourself back along the line. Far better to put extra effort into making sure you can't fall off in the first place. Harnesses (with a crotch strap), *short* (dual) tethers, jacklines and padeyes everywhere you may need to go.
A old biker trick to put rubber hand grips on new handlebars is to wet the steel with gasoline then dip the rubberized grips in the gase before you slide them on like warm butter on hot toast .
.a benefit I found is when the gas evaporates it dory of glues the rubber to the steel and you pretty much have to sand them off. To remove them
Thanks
Yes, but you should specify not to get gasoline on the outer portion of the grip, correct? Only the inside part of the grip.
Short but sweet
when sliding rubber over steel, try this, spray hairspray down inside the rubber, it's very slippy when wet and when it dries it holds like glue, old motorbike trick for fitting rubber handlebar grips, don't use petrol as some say, it disloves the rubber. in saying that theromplastic coating is very cheap and very easy to do, and lots of colour choices !
It's 4:00 in the morning here in Washington State. Thanks for the jingling
Alan doesn't sleep, so he doesn't expect us to either.
Hi, I am fascinated with the build and it's potential for adventure. Speaking of handrails, do you have a method to climb back onboard in case one falls off the boat?
The plan will be ladder that can go out either side hatch, and when I've made the rear extension, a semi-fixed one there too.
Nice & short. Thanks.
If you use shrink wrap again. Wet the hand grip with alcohol before you try to push on. It will create a lubricant. As you hear shrink it will evaporate. Keep up your good work!
Good tip
ALAN!
Thank you Alex, for keeping you videos short and exactly to the point, so sick of drawn of videos that should be a 3rd of the length for the info on display.
Cheers. Generally I do aim for longer, yet with the same density of info. And no royalty-free music whilst watching me paint for 10 mins.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals I love long content but only if the info or entertainment warrants it. How is the exaust build going?
I have all the parts - just waiting for the weldy person to return from holiday.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals nice
Nice... bye 2x👍
Hockey tape the handles. Easy, tight, warm,
Can us subscribers see Alan before his voyage to the arctic like a farewell tour of Alan?
Yes indeed. I'm hoping to have Alan visit eastern UK marinas and Norwegian coastal towns next summer.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals flights booked from Ireland 🇮🇪 see you and Alan next summer!
I'll release details as soon as I can :)
noice, cant wait for alan to be ready. is there a market for small ice-capable boats or you had to prepare alan because the lack of said market?
Almost to quick. 🙂
Do you have or have you considered a system for securing yourself to the 'ship' in the event that you find yourself needing to move around on the outside of the hull? Something similar to what people on sailing vessels use so that if they happen to fall overboard, especially while in motion or in strong currents, they will still be secured to the vessel and will have a way to 'reunite' themselves with the vessel? If something like that were to happen in an arctic environment it would certainly be a perilous situation and even if a person couldn't pull themselves back it would at least give another person on the vessel a distinct advantage during the rescue efforts and could make all of the difference. And similarly do you have any sort of rules with regard to wearing a life preserver or other flotation device, since in the arctic, especially, one has a very limited opportunity with which to save themselves before they sink (in the neighborhood of seconds)? I realize that this seems to be unnecessary or sissified to some, but then again one generally doesn't foresee or make plans when it comes to falling overboard.
I may not be a thermal plastic expert but I know that thicker plastic reacts to temperature more extremely. Especially extreme heat or extreme cold can cause it to fracture more easily.
Only way to avoid the wrinkles is to cut segments and shrink them overlapping.
or simply not covering the bends, if one can avoid the need to grip the bars in that spot?
"Counterproductive to my happiness"?!?!? was there any happiness left? ;)
Hashtag grateful.
Have you ever tried getting back in the boat from the water?
Not yet. The plan will be ladder that can go out either side hatch, and when I've made the rear extension, a semi-fixed one there too.
Maybe a dusting of talcum powder inside the heat shrink tube would have made your life easier?
did i miss the episode where you extensively dipped your doorhandle in orange goo?
You did
@@AlexHibbertOriginals well gotta rewatch them all now and find that sequence.
That's the spirit!
Hey, for the handles how about wrapping them in paracord ? If done tight and properly it could last you a very long time
Cover the handles with grip tape
thermo plastic you tube expert...lol
